Syringe-mediated syndemics.

One consequence of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic has been the emergence of a broad awareness of the potential role of syringes in the transmission of infectious diseases. In addition to HIV/AIDS, the use of unsterile syringes by multiple persons has been linked to the spread of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Leishmaniasis, malaria and various other infections. The purpose of this paper is to extend awareness of the grave risks of multiperson syringe use by examining the role of this behavior in the development of infectious disease syndemics. The term syndemics refers to the clustering, often due to

The syndemic of AIDS and STDS among MSM.

The spread of HIV and other STDs among men who have sex with men (MSM) has been labeled a syndemic because in this population a number of different and interrelated health problems have come together and interact with one another. The various elements of the syndemic have an additive effect, each one intensifying the others. These factors include the number of infectious diseases endemic in this population, the high rate of substance abuse problems and psychological disorders, and the significant percentage of MSM who have experienced childhood sexual abuse and other adverse events. While MSM

Assessing a syndemic: Gibraltar in the time of cholera.

More than a decade ago Singer (2009) described Gibraltar's experience with cholera and smallpox in 1865 as a syndemic. In this study, we provide a reassessment of that event and, consequently, propose a methodology to identify a syndemic at the population level. We propose that the concept of the harvesting effect from demographic studies on crisis mortality provides a useful framework for evaluating the presence of a syndemic. Our research begins by establishing a normative baseline mortality (BM) through life table analysis, where changes in life expectancy (LE) around BM can be used to show

Obesity, Insulin Resistance, Caries, and Periodontitis: Syndemic Framework.

(1) Background: To investigate the grouping of obesity and insulin resistance with caries and periodontitis from a syndemic perspective through pathways of socioeconomic inequalities, smoking, alcohol, and high sugar consumption in adolescence. (2) Methods: The population-based RPS Cohort study, São Luís, Brazil, in ages 18-19 years (n = 2515) was used. The outcomes were the grouping of pbesity and Insulin Resistance Phenotype (latent variable formed by Triglycerides/HDL ratio, TyG index, and VLDL) and the Chronic Oral Disease Burden (latent variable comprising caries, bleeding on probing, pro

The contribution of syndemic conditions to cardiovascular disease risk.

The syndemic conditions of low education, childhood maltreatment, depression, HIV, alcohol and cocaine use, and obesity have been established as independent risk factors for cardiovascular risk, but research examining the association between syndemic conditions and cardiovascular risk in high-risk populations is lacking. A total of N = 503 participants underwent an ultrasound of the carotid artery to assess for atherosclerotic plaque. Participants, HIV-infected (n = 202) and HIV-uninfected (n = 301) with and without a history of cocaine use, were a mean age of 36.13 years (SD = 9.51); 50% were

A syndemic model of women incarcerated in community jails.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to test whether variations in substance abuse, mental health diagnoses, individual experiences of violence, community experiences of violence, and incarceration history may be reduced to a single underlying syndemic factor for a sample of women incarcerated in three Midwestern U.S. jails. DESIGN AND SAMPLE: Secondary data analysis of a cross-sectional study of a medical utilization survey; initial confirmatory factor analysis tested fit of model; modification indexes provided confirmatory fit. 290 women incarcerated in three urban Midwestern U.S. jails

Syndemic aspects between COVID-19 pandemic and social inequalities.

Although the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has reached all over the world population, it has demonstrated a heterogeneous impact on different populations. The most vulnerable communities which coexist daily with the social inequalities like low access to hygiene and personal protection products, crowded residences, and higher levels of chronic diseases have a higher risk of contact and the spread of infection, beyond unfavorable clinical outcomes. The elevation of the risk of infection exposure can be related to gender due to the presence of a larger contingent of women in essen

Syndemic theory, structural violence and HIV among African-Americans.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This paper will review recent use of syndemic frameworks in HIV research among African-Americans. RECENT FINDINGS: Researchers have used syndemic theory in diverse African-American study populations, including MSM, cis-women, trans-women, heterosexual men and adolescents. These studies have evaluated the associations between syndemic conditions and a variety of outcomes, such as sexual behaviours, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, HIV testing, adherence to antiretroviral therapy, HIV suppression and preexposure prophylaxis use. The most frequently evaluated syn

Tuberculosis and chronic kidney disease: an emerging global syndemic.

The link between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and tuberculosis (TB) has been known for more than 40 years, but the interaction between these 2 diseases is still poorly understood. Dialysis and renal transplant patients appear to be at a higher risk of TB, in part related to immunosuppression along with socioeconomic, demographic, and comorbid factors. Meanwhile, TB screening and diagnostic test performance is suboptimal in the CKD population, and there is limited evidence to guide protocols. Given the increasing prevalence of CKD in TB endemic areas, a merging of CKD and TB epidemics could hav

A Mixed-Methods Systematic Review on Syndemics in Rheumatology.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess the use of framework and corresponding methodology to document syndemics and its impact in rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMDs). METHODS: Using a mixed-methods systematic review, studies using the syndemic framework approach for RMDs were identified and published from January 2003 to January 2021. The Joanna Briggs Institute, Cochrane Collaboration, and PRISMA guidelines were followed to search, retrieve, revise, and analyze. RESULTS: A total of 658 potential articles were identified, but only 10 were initially eligible. After a full-text review, 4 were

Syndemics and the history of disease: Towards a new engagement.

Historians of medicine and disease have yet to think through a syndemic lens. This commentary aims to point out why they should. Although there are several hurdles to overcome, our histories of disease and our understanding of current syndemics both stand to gain should historians begin to explore episodes of cooccurring diseases that share root causes.

The spread of Zika and the potential for global arbovirus syndemics.

It is estimated that over a million people die each year from infectious diseases of zoonotic origin and hundreds of millions suffer from these pervasive threats to human well-being. In light of the emergent global concern over the Zika virus, evidence that it has not one but two competent mosquito vector species in the Aedes family, and that both can be co-infected with other pathogens including dengue and chikungunya, this paper examines research suggesting the prospect of significant twenty-first-century outbreaks of arbovirus syndemics. Uniting the concepts 'synergy' with 'epidemic', a syn

Disentangling opioids-related overdose syndemics: a scoping review.

This article reviews research investigating the synergistic interaction of opioid-related morbidity and mortality with other social, psychiatric, and biological conditions, to describe how and why it is syndemic. Opioid-related overdose syndemics are driven by commercial interests, emerging in communities facing social and economic disadvantage, and interacting with a range of other health conditions. We included articles that empirically investigated an opioid-related syndemic, discussed syndemic co-factors associated with opioid use, or framed opioid consumption conceptually in relation to s

A Syndemic Approach to Explore Factors Associated with Bacterial Vaginosis.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is the most common genital infection in women and is associated with an increased risk of sexually transmitted infections and HIV. This study uses a syndemic approach to evaluate factors associated with BV. Non-pregnant, HIV-negative, sexually active, cis-gender women aged 18-45 years living in Miami, Florida were recruited from Nov.2018- Jun.2021. Participants completed a sociodemographic and behavioral questionnaire along with gynecological examinations. BV was diagnosed by Amsel criteria and confirmed by a Nugent score ≥ 4. A syndemic score was calculated as the sum

Identifying and managing infectious disease syndemics in patients with HIV.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: We will present recent articles focusing on HIV synergistic interactions with other sexually transmitted infections, tuberculosis, and hepatitis, as well as recent advances in the study of social and behavioral determinants that facilitate this clustering of infectious disease. For each synergistic interaction, we highlight evidence-based interventions that clinicians and policymakers should consider to tackle HIV and infectious disease syndemics. RECENT FINDINGS: Significant advances in understanding the behavioral and structural determinants of HIV and other infectious di

Syndemics among individuals enrolled in the PrEP Brasil Study.

BACKGROUND: Concurrent psychosocial problems may synergistically increase the risk of HIV infection (syndemics), representing a challenge for prevention. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence and associated factors of syndemics among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) enrolled in the Brazilian pre-exposure prophylaxis demonstration study (PrEP Brasil Study). METHODS: Secondary cross-sectional analysis of the PrEP Brasil Study was performed. Of 450 HIV-seronegative MSM/TGW enrolled in the PrEP Brasil Study- conducted at Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil- 421 participa

The global cardiovascular-liver-metabolic syndemic: epidemiology, trends and challenges.

The growing epidemics of metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obesity and cardiovascular disease are inextricably linked. Cardiovascular-liver-metabolic (CLM) diseases coexist and interact to constitute a synergy of epidemics (a syndemic), with shared mechanisms and socioeconomic influences. The goal of this Review is to construct this complex public-health issue into a unified framework, using epidemiological data to illustrate the current burden of disease and the trends in the CLM syndemic and to make projections for the future. We also discuss
