Topical sirolimus in dermatology: a systematic review.

Topical sirolimus is increasingly utilized off-licence to manage various dermatological conditions while avoiding typical adverse effects associated with systemic sirolimus. However, widespread use is limited by a highly heterogeneous evidence base of mixed quality. Our aim was to evaluate the current evidence base for the indications, efficacy and safety profile of topical sirolimus in dermatology. A literature search was conducted from 2005 to 4 July 2023, of English-language studies, with the following databases consulted: MEDLINE, PubMed, Embase, CENTRAL and EBSCO. Key words included 'topi

Systematic Review Efficacy of Topical Minoxidil for Nail Growth: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Nail growth disorders may lead to functional limitations and cosmetic distress, yet evidence-based therapeutic options remain limited. Minoxidil, a vasodilatory agent widely used for androgenetic alopecia, has been proposed as a potential treatment to enhance nail growth because of its proliferative and vascular effects. This systematic review evaluated the efficacy and safety of topical minoxidil for promoting nail growth in both healthy individuals and patients with nail growth disorders. METHODS: The review was conducted in accordance with PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Comprehensiv

Topical treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum: A systematic review.

Systemic immunosuppressants are the mainstay of treatment for pyoderma gangrenosum (PG), but they generally have significant side effects which may be avoided by limiting treatment to topical therapy. This review aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of topical treatments for PG. An extensive literature search identified nineteen suitable publications for analysis, including two open cohort studies, five case series and twelve single case reports. The quality of evidence in the publications was graded and data relating to topical PG treatment was extracted. The lack of randomised clinical tr

Topical dapsone in the treatment of acne: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Acne is one of the most common dermatological disorders. Initial therapies for acne include topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, and topical clindamycin. However, patients who fail initial therapies may benefit from alternative topicals, including dapsone gel. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the current literature studying the efficacy of topical dapsone in the treatment of acne. METHODS: PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library were systematically searched for clinical trials examining the efficacy of topical dapsone in the treatment of acne. RESULTS: Fourteen studies were included in the an

Topical treatment for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Topical measures are the mainstay treatment for postinflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Numerous studies have assessed the efficacy of topical medications for the treatment of PIH, but few have evaluated the quality of evidence supporting these topical therapies. We performed a systematic review to evaluate the evidence of topical treatments for PIH. METHODS: We included English-language studies that evaluated topical medications for PIH. We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, and EMBASE from conception to March 29 2021. We used the modified Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Develop

Topical antibiotics for acute bacterial conjunctivitis: a systematic review.

There has been uncertainty about whether antibiotic therapy confers significant benefit in the treatment of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of antibiotic therapy in the management of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Using standard Cochrane search methods, we identified double-blind randomised controlled trials in which any form of antibiotic treatment (topical, systemic or combination) had been compared with placebo in the management of acute bacterial conjunctivitis. Data extraction and analysis followed a pre-defined protocol. Meta-analysis was performe

BACKGROUND: Glutathione, a potent antioxidant, has gained attention for its skin-lightening effects, leading to ethical debates. Social media influence has popularized its use in various skincare products such as under-eye creams, face masks, sunscreens, and moisturizers. Despite its popularity, scientific research on topical glutathione is limited. OBJECTIVE: To perform a review of existing literature on the safety and efficacy of topical glutathione. Topical Treatment for Retinal Degenerative Pathologies: A Systematic Review.

The topical administration of medicines is the preferred route in ocular therapy, at least for the anterior segment of the eye. However, the eye's inherent functional and biological barriers all work against the active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to efficiently reach the targeted retinal structures. The main objective of this article is to offer a systematic review of the scientific literature in recent years, focusing on the latest developments of topical treatment intended for retinal degenerative diseases. Database search returned 102 clinical studies, focused on topical treatment for a

Topical care in pemphigus wounds: A systematic review of the literature.

Pemphigus is a group of autoimmune blistering diseases. Given the ulcerative nature of the diseases, the full healing of ulcers and erosions might be challenging. The aim of this study was to determine various topical wound care options for pemphigus patients, the advantage of each alternative, and to compare their efficacy, safety, and feasibility. In accordance with PRISMA guideline, we performed a systematic search in PubMed/Medline, web of science, and Scopus databases for articles published from inception until February 2, 2022. A systematic review of the efficacy and safety of topical cyclosporine in dermatology.

Cyclosporine-A (Cyc-A) was initially prescribed as systemic therapy for patients receiving solid organ transplants or in patients with graft versus host disease (GVHD). Topical Cyc-A is an ideal form of cyclosporine in the treatment of mucocutaneous disorders as it causes fewer systemic side effects and has more stable results than steroids; however, poor absorption through the skin makes the development of new formulations necessary to improve skin permeability. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of topical Cyc-A in different dermatological conditions. A thorough sy

Topical opioid use in dermatologic disease: A systematic review.

Topical opioid formulations offer a potential solution to manage pain and decrease the use of systemic opioids. Synthesis of use and efficacy of topical opioids in dermatological conditions has not been well characterized. We conducted a systematic search of the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from 1980 to February 2021. This study analyzed data from 14 articles and 263 patients on the use of topical opioids for pain related to chronic ulcers, burns, oral lichen planus, photodynamic therapy, and split-thickness skin grafts. Systematic review of topical amitriptyline for the treatment of neuropathic pain.

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE: Neuropathic pain is a common disorder for which patients seek treatment. The most common causes of neuropathic pain are diabetes, herpetic infection and chemotherapy-induced neuropathy. Oral administration of amitriptyline has traditionally been used for treating neuropathic pain; however, it has dose-related anticholinergic effects, which may limit its use in some individuals. Pharmacotherapeutic agents that are commonly used to treat neuropathic pain include antidepressants, anticonvulsants, opioids and opioid-like substances, and topical medications. The objecti
