Anti-Blackness and systemic racism are long-standing pressing social issues that have received increasing attention in the counseling psychology literature. However, the past few years have demonstrated what can only be described as an emboldening of anti-Blackness-the brutal individual and systemic threats of emotional and physical violence and loss of life that Black individuals and communities face on a daily basis-and a harsh reminder of the systemic racism that continues to threaten the well-being of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. In this introduction for the special section on D

The American Psychological Association's resolutions on dismantling systemic racism represent a watershed moment in our discipline, yet confusion remains as to what it means to "dismantle" racism given psychology's emphasis on changing individual beliefs. This submission will review the tension between "idealist" interpretations of critical race theory emphasizing individual beliefs and "realist" perspectives contextualizing racism within political economic arrangements. Psychology's adoption of an "idealist" framework will be shown to privilege a neoliberal project emphasizing individual chan

Special Issue - Race reconciled II: Interpreting and communicating biological variation and race in 2021 Many sociocultural factors, like poverty and trauma, or homelessness versus a safe neighborhood, can get "under our skin" and affect our lives. These factors may also get "into our genes" through epigenetic changes that influence how genes are expressed. Changes in gene expression can further influence how we respond to sociocultural factors and how those factors impact our physical and mental health, creating a feedback loop between our sociocultural environment and our genome.

The consequences of racial microaggressions are most often discussed at an interpersonal level. In this article, we contend that microaggressions play an important role in maintaining systems of racial oppression beyond the interpersonal context. Specifically, we illustrate how microaggressions establish White superiority in the United States by othering people of color (e.g., treating people of color as if they are not true citizens) and communicating that they are inferior (e.g., environmental exclusions and attacks, treating people of color as second-class citizens). We also present evidenc

The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) continues to devastate the world and the United States remains number one of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths. Research demonstrates that Blacks and Hispanics in the United States are disproportionately impacted by COVID-19, especially among highly marginalized people at the intersection of immigration and incarceration. Social distancing is a privilege and contact tracing is a deterrent for historically oppressed populations. Public health professionals have attempted a multicausal approach to prevent the spread of infectious diseases, but they have been unsu

INTRODUCTION: People who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) represent an increasing proportion of patients with cystic fibrosis (CF). Despite the transformative potential of highly effective modulator therapies, BIPOC people with CF (pwCF) experience disproportionately worse outcomes, including lower lung function and increased risk of hospitalization. Social and structural conditions exacerbate these inequities. To better understand these dynamics, this study used photovoice, a community-based participatory research method, to explore how BIPOC pwCF describe the influe

Mexican-origin children from immigrant families are impacted by various systemic oppressions in life. The study seeks to examine how adolescents' developmental outcomes are associated with specific phenotypic, psychological, and social features of skin color, as manifested by skin tone, skin color satisfaction, and foreigner stress. By taking a holistic approach, we examine both positive and negative adjustment outcomes, including delinquency, resilience, and effortful control. Participants were 604 Mexican-origin adolescents aged between 11.08 and 15.29 (Mage = 12.91, SD = 0.92) with at leas

Racial disparities in the prevalence of periodontal disease are consistent and persistent. The epidemiology of periodontal disease demonstrates racial inequities: non-Hispanic Black (14.7%), Mexican American (13.4%), and other Hispanic adults (7.8%) experience a higher prevalence of severe periodontal disease than non-Hispanic White adults (5.9%). Epidemiologic and clinical research on periodontal health suffers from the same problem that has plagued the health equity movement, an over emphasis on describing racial inequities coupled with few interventions that reduce racial health inequity. IMPORTANCE: The intersection of endemic structural racism and the global health crisis secondary to the COVID-19 pandemic represents a syndemic, defined as the aggregation of 2 or more endemic and epidemic conditions leading to adverse repercussions for health. Long-standing inequities have placed Black individuals at disproportionate risk for negative postpartum mental health outcomes. Studies are urgently needed to understand how the COVID-19 pandemic has added to this risk (eg, syndemic associations).
OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between the syndemic and the postpartum mental heal

Black women in the United States experience inequities in perinatal and neonatal mortality, contributing to psychological stress during and after perinatal loss. This analysis drew on a subset of interviews from a larger qualitative dataset and explored the experiences of 22 Black women who experienced perinatal loss and were pregnant or had given birth after a loss, focusing on feeling unheard by healthcare providers. Semi-structured interviews were conducted, and data were analyzed using descriptive coding and inductive thematic analysis. Three themes emerged: unheard and dismissed concerns,

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the relationship among systemic racism, psychological symptoms (depression, anxiety, and/or post-traumatic stress disorders), and burnout in healthcare workers (HCWs).
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether distress related to awareness of systemic racism contributes to psychological symptoms and/or burnout in HCWs. We explored whether this form of racism-related distress may moderate the relationship between race, ethnicity, psychological symptoms, and burnout.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from November 19, 2020, through January 11, 2021. Statist

OBJECTIVES: Black women in the United States experience disproportionately high rates of intimate partner violence (IPV) and persistent barriers to care. Guided by decolonial frameworks, this study examines how systemic racism shaped Black women's help-seeking during the COVID-19 pandemic.
METHODS: This qualitative inquiry is part of a mixed-methods R01 study conducted in the Upper Midwest. Between 2021 and 2023, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 28 urban Black women who experienced IPV during the pandemic. Participants were recruited through community agencies using purposive and

OBJECTIVE: To use a novel measure of systemic racism to examine its relationship with Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) to Non-Hispanic White (NHW) racial disparities in infant mortality across U.S. counties.
STUDY DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study, a composite, multi-dimensional measure of systemic racism at the county level was developed using confirmatory factor analysis based on indicators across five dimensions of systemic racism. Using linear regression analysis, we examined the relationship between the systemic racism factor scores and the NHB to NHW racial disparities in county-level infan

The overrepresentation of youth of color has long been acknowledged and accepted in juvenile justice and legal systems. Many risk factors contribute to the detention and incarceration of youth; however, there is little evidence to explain how structural inequities and systemic racism add to that vulnerability. Historically, laws were passed to benefit the White society and resulted in outcomes that caused grave aftereffects for people of color and in some cases, ethnic minorities. Within the context of juvenile justice and the lens of critical race theory, the authors of this paper seek to ill

This special issue of the Journal of Psychoactive Drugs, titled "Confronting the Impacts of Systemic Racism and Structural Oppression on Overdose and Substance Use Inequities," addresses the disproportionate burden of drug overdose and substance use impacts borne by Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities. While overall overdose mortality rates have fluctuated, deep racial inequities persist and are driven in part by structural oppressive forces, systemic and structural racism, and White supremacy. To move beyond traditional risk-factor epidemiology and reductive "gap gazing

Anti-Black racism is a specific form of racism directed at Black people. In healthcare, there are poignant examples of anti-Black racism in the recruitment, selection, and retention stages of the job cycle. Research shows that anti-Black racism is associated with inequitable work outcomes and the under-representation of Black physicians. However, empirical findings are scattered with no organizing framework to consolidate these findings. To add to the literature, in this paper we present the attraction-selection-attrition (ASA) model (Schneider, 1987) as an organizing framework to discuss Blac

BACKGROUND: Racial disparities in birth outcomes represent a significant public health concern in the United States. Factors associated with racism have been posited as a mechanism underlying these disparities. Yet, findings from previous studies are mixed and based on small, geographically limited samples. This study aims to examine the relationship between experiences of racism and preterm birth in a population-based sample and to explore the role of adequacy of prenatal care within that relationship.
METHODS: Data from the 2004 through 2012 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System were

BACKGROUND: End-stage kidney disease continues to disproportionally impact the lives of First Nations peoples. Systemic racism is a key determinant, and manifests as differential access to determinants of health (housing, employment, access to care) and differential care. This paper discusses how different models of primary healthcare operating in rural and remote Manitoba communities results in different outcomes for patients identified as being at risk of kidney disease.
METHODS: This study is a partnership between researchers from the First Nations Health and Social Secretariat of Manitoba
