Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii that is highly prevalent worldwide. Although the infection is asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, it severely affects immunocompromised individuals, causing conditions such as encephalitis, myocarditis, or pneumonitis. The limited therapeutic efficacy of drugs currently used to treat toxoplasmosis has prompted the search for new therapeutic alternatives. The aim of this study was to determine the anti-Toxoplasma activity of extracts obtained from two species of the genus Tabebuia. Twenty-six extracts, 12 ob

Red Lapacho (Tabebuia impetiginosa, syn. Tabebuia avellanedae), a canopy tree indigenous to the Amazonian rainforest and other parts of South America, has been acclaimed to be one of the "miraculous" cures for cancer and tumours. For the first time, during the 1960s, it attracted considerable attention in Brazil and Argentina as a 'wonder drug'. Traditionally, the botanical drug is widely used in local and traditional phytomedicine, usually ingested as a decoction prepared from the inner bark of the tree to treat numerous conditions like bacterial and fungal infections, fever, syphilis, malari

Tabebuia avellanedae is commonly used for the treatment of peptic ulcers. We carried out this study with the ethanolic extract of bark from Tabebuia avellanedae (EET) (30-1000 mg/kg) to determine its gastroprotective activity and to clarify the pathways involved in this effect. Acute gastric ulceration in rats was produced by oral administration of ethanol and ibuprofen. After ethanol administration, the gastric wall mucus was examined. Chronic gastric ulceration was produced by injection of acetic acid in rat gastric subserosa. Anti-secretory studies were undertaken using Shay rat pylorus lig

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tabebuia aurea (Silva Manso) Benth. & Hook. f. ex S. Moore is used as anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antiophidic in traditional medicine, though its pharmacological proprieties are still underexplored. In the bothropic envenoming, pain is a key symptom drove by an intense local inflammatory and neurotoxic event. The antivenom serum therapy is still the main treatment despite its poor local effects against pain and tissue injury. Furthermore, it is limited to ambulatorial niches, giving space for the search of new and more inclusive pharmacological approaches.

Both ethyl acetate and aqueous fractions of Tabebuia aurea leaves exhibited noteworthy antioxidant and nephroprotective activities against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced nephrotoxicity in rats, as evidenced by the remarkable improvements of renal serum biomarkers and histopathological features. Additionally, the ethyl acetate fraction displayed a prominent in vitro antitrypanosomal activity against Trypanosoma brucei; consequently, the leaves were subjected to LC-HR-ESI-MS metabolomic profiling to discover the constituents that possibly underlie their bioactivities. Therefore, ten metabol

Giardia duodenalis is a widespread intestinal protozoan that affects mammals, including humans. Symptoms can range from being subclinical to causing severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Giardiasis often requires repeated treatment with synthetic drugs like metronidazole. In recent years, treatment failures in clinical cases involving nitroimidazoles have been increasingly reported. Consequently, identifying therapeutic alternatives is necessary. Medicinal plants have traditionally been used as antiparasitic compounds, but systematic evaluation under controlled experimental conditions is often

Knowledge of the environmental distribution of C. neoformans/C. gattii is important in the epidemiology and ecology of the etiological agent, which causes cryptococcosis, a deadly disease worldwide. The aim of this report is to describe the presence of C. neoformans/C. gattii in new environmental niches in Colombia. A total of 837 environmental samples were collected from six different species of trees across four cities; molecular type was determined by PCR fingerprinting and RFLP. Molecular type VNI and VGIII were isolated from different species of trees, resulting in two novel niches for th

The genus Tabebuia is widely used in traditional medicine of tropical and subtropical countries. We recently reported the antitumor activity toward several human cell lines of the ethyl acetate extract of the leaves of Tabebuia hypoleuca, a species endemic to Cuba, together with the high content of triterpenic acids. This work describes the development and the validation of a reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with diode array detection method for the simultaneous quantitation of the contents of oleanolic acid (OA) and ursolic acid (UA). The method was carried out on a C18 c

Snake bites are a severe problem in the countryside of Brazil and are usually attributed to snakes of the genera Bothrops, Crotalus, and Lachesis. Snake venom can release ectoenzymes and nucleotidases that modulate the purinergic system. In addition to serum therapy against snake poisoning, medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory activities, such as Tabebuia aurea, is empirically applied in accidents that occur in difficult-to-access areas. This study aimed was to verify the presence and activity of nucleotidases in the crude venom of Bothrops mattogrossensis (BmtV) in vitro and characterize t

The effects of Tabebuia avellanedae (TACE), traditionally prescribed in the treatment of cancer, and the naphtoquinone beta-lapachone (beta-lap) on the growth and differentiation of granulocyte and macrophage progenitor cells (CFU-GM) were studied in Ehrlich ascites tumour-bearing mice. Myelosuppression concomitant with increases in spleen CFU-GM and in serum colony-stimulating activity (CSA) were observed in these animals. Treatment with TACE (30-500 mg/kg) and beta-lap (1-5mg/kg) reversed these effects in a dose-dependent manner. The optimal biologically active doses of 120 mg/kg TACE and 1m

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis and Chagas disease are neglected tropical diseases that affect millions worldwide. Despite the high morbidity associated with these infections, current treatments are often highly toxic and are showing diminishing efficacy. Thus, new therapeutic options are urgently needed. In this study, bio-guided assays were conducted on the sawdust of Tabebuia chrysantha ("guayacán") to identify promising bioactive compounds. The ethanolic crude extract, five chromatography fractions, pure isoflavans sativan and vestitol, and a mixture were evaluated in vitro against Leishmania braz

Although osteoarthritis (OA), a degenerative joint disease characterized by the degradation of joint articular cartilage and subchondral bones, is generally regarded as a degenerative rather than inflammatory disease, recent studies have indicated the involvement of inflammation in OA pathogenesis. Tabebuia avellanedae has long been used to treat various diseases; however, its role in inflammatory response and the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. In this study, the pharmacological effects of Tabetri (Tabebuia avellanedae ethanol extract (Ta-EE)) on OA pathogenesis indu

This investigation delves into the extraction of polyphenols from the flowers of Tabebuia rosea using a basic maceration approach with acetone, ethanol, and methanol as solvents. The spectroscopic analysis of the dye obtained confirms the existence of functional groups in the polyphenol extract. The study also explores optoelectronic, fluorescence, and photometric characteristics associated with polyphenols. Micro-destructive surface techniques, such as XPS led to the acquisition of detailed information on the extracted polyphenol. The XPS analysis verified the chemical composition of the dyes
