The role of target organs in the maturation of adrenergic neurons was studied in the neonatal rat. The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) and its end organs, the salivary glands and iris were employed as a model system. Unilateral sialectomy and iridectomy in 3-day-old animals prevented the normal development of ganglion tyrosine hydroxylase (T-OH) and DOPA decarboxylase activities. These enzymes are highly localized to adrenergic neurons in the SCG, and were used to monitor maturation of these cells. Enzyme activity remained depressed for at least two months, the longest time tested. In contras

Candida and dermatophyte species are the most common causes of superficial mycoses because their treatment can be difficult due to limitations of current antifungal drugs in terms of toxicity, bioavailability, interactions, narrow-spectrum activity, and development of resistance. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) involves the topical administration of a photosensitizer in combination with light of an appropriate wavelength and molecular oxygen that produces reactive oxygen species (ROS), which promote damage to several vital components of the microorganism. Tagetes species are known as a source of th

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Gout is an inflammatory arthritis caused by urate crystal accumulation in the joints, leading to intense pain and swelling. Although non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are commonly used, they may cause adverse effects, including gastrointestinal bleeding. Thus, safer alternatives are needed. Tagetes lucida Cav., traditionally known in Mexico as "pericón," is employed to alleviate rheumatic and inflammatory pain.
AIM OF THE STUDY: To provide experimental evidence supporting the traditional use of T. lucida as an antinociceptive agent in a gout model.

Both nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) are very important signal molecules, but the roles they play in signal transduction of sulfur dioxide (SO2) induced toxicities on ornamental plants is not clear. In this study, the functions of NO and ROS in SO2-induced death of lower epidermal guard cells in ornamental plant Tagetes erecta were investigated. The results showed that SO2 derivatives (0.4-4.0 mmol L(-1) of final concentrations) could reduce the guard cells' viability and increase their death rates in a dose-dependent manner. Meanwhile, the significant increase of cellular

In the present study, via a 180-day field trial, the indicators of soil total cadmium, DTPA-Cd, organic matter, and plant cadmium extraction were tested after the application of chelate tetrasodium glutamate diacetate (GLDA) to investigate the potential of GLDA combined with Tagetes patula L. to remediate cadmium-contaminated soil. To do so, five GLDA treatments (e.g., 0, 292.5, 585, 1170, and 2340 kg hm-2) were practiced. For each treatment, the total GLDA was divided into two applications with 15-day intervals (0.25, 0.47, and 0.61 mg·kg-1) under T. patula plantation. Compared with the contr

The blowfly Lucilia cuprina has great medico-sanitary and veterinary importance due to the ability of its larval form to develop in decaying organic matter, parasitizing vertebrates. Fly eradication is challenging and the essential oil (EO) of Tagetes minuta (TMEO) have been reported to have therapeutic properties. This study aimed to determine the activity of EO from the aerial parts of T. minuta against third instar larvae (L3) of L. cuprina. Groups of 20 L3 were placed on filter paper, which were impregnated with varying concentrations (0.19; 0.39; 0.79; 1.59; 2.38; 3.18; 4.77; and 6.36 μL/

Lutein is a carotenoid with antioxidant properties and is commonly present in many fruits, vegetables, and egg yolk. Lutein affords protection against the development of the two common eye diseases of aging: cataract and macular degeneration. As the dietary lutein concentration is much lower compared to the actual requirement to reduce macular degeneration, supplementation of lutein is under consideration. There are very few data on the toxicity of lutein. In the present study, the authors have evaluated the short-term and long-term toxicity profile of lutein and its esterified form isolated f

Growth regulators have become an effective tool for enhancing the cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants by promoting vegetative development and increasing the accumulation of bioactive metabolites. Benzyladenine (BA), a synthetic cytokinin, is widely recognized for its ability to influence growth and secondary metabolism in ornamental species; however, dose response evaluations under open field conditions remain limited for Tagetes erecta. This study examined the effects of foliar BA applications at 0, 50, 75, and 100 ppm, applied weekly over three intervals, on vegetative growth, pigme

This research presents an innovative genetic transformation protocol for marigolds (Tagetes erecta L.), a species of great significance in floriculture, impacting both yield and quality. The study introduces seed priming technology as a novel approach and evaluates its effect on the germination rate. The results indicate that the germination rates of pigmented marigold seeds were not significantly affected by Agrobacterium immersion under optimal conditions, although variations were observed in genotypes and treatment parameters. Optimal germination was observed at an optical density (OD600 nm

The crude acetone extract (CAE) of defatted inflorescences of Tagetes patula was partitioned into five semipurified fractions: n-hexane (HF), dichloromethane (DF), ethyl acetate (EAF), n-butanol (BF), and aqueous (AQF). BF was fractionated by reversed-phase polyamide column chromatography, obtaining 34 subfractions, which were subjected to HSCCC, where patuletin and patulitrin were isolated. CAE and the fractions BF, EAF, DF, and AQF were analyzed by LC-DAD-MS, and patuletin and patulitrin were determined as the major substances in EAF and BF, respectively. BF was also analyzed by HPLC and cap

Ornamental cultivars of Tagetes sp., commonly named marigold, are one of the presently most popular pot and garden plants. Sensitizing experiments in guinea pigs with short ether extracts and isolated compounds revealed the presence of 3 constituents that must be considered as contact allergens. They were identified as 5-(3-buten-1-ynyl)-2,2'-bithiophene, alpha-terthienyl and hydroxytremetone. In sensitized animals, butenylbithiophene showed moderate to strong sensitizing potency, while alpha-terthienyl was less strong and hydroxytremetone weak. The results demonstrate, for the first time, tha

It has been demonstrated that the decoction of the aerial parts of Tagetes lucida Cav. produces an antidepressant effect during the forced swimming test (FST) in rats. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different organic extracts and one aqueous extract of the aerial parts of T. lucida on the FST. In addition, the possible involvement of the serotonergic system in the antidepressant-like effect of T. lucida in the FST was evaluated, as was its potential toxicological effect. The different extracts of T. lucida (methanol, hexane, dichloromethane and aqueous, 10 and 50 mg/kg), a
