Coalitions of the Tarsal Bones.

Tarsal coalitions are the result of impaired mesenchymal separation of the tarsal bones. The most common types include calcaneonavicular or talocalcaneal coalitions. Subtalar stiffness results in pathologic kinematics with increased risk of ankle sprains, planovalgus foot deformity, and progressive joint degeneration. Resection of the coalition yields good results. Tissue interposition may reduce the risk of reossification, and concomitant deformity should be addressed in the same surgical setting.

Bilateral extra tarsal bones in Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome: the fourth cuneiform bones.

Rubinstein-Taybi syndrome is a syndrome of mental retardation associated with digital changes, consisting mainly of broad thumbs and large toes. This paper deals with pedal changes in a patient with this syndrome in whom bilateral, large, extra tarsal bones occurred between the medial cuneiform and intermediate cuneiform bones. They articulated with these bones, as well as with the first and the second metatarsals. It is suggested that these extra tarsal bones be labelled as the fourth cuneiform bones (os cuneiformis IV). To the best of the author's knowledge, such an extra tarsal bone has nev

Hydatid disease of the tarsal bones. A case report.

Hydatid disease is caused by the larval form of the tapeworm Echinococcus. Osseous cysts are rare and very few cases of foot infestation have been reported. We present the case of a 51-year-old woman who developed a palpable mass at the medial dorsal aspect of the right midfoot. Radiological examination showed cystic lesions in the cuneiforms and the navicular. The lesion was explored and several small cysts containing clear fluid were found. They were evacuated and the bone was curetted. The diagnosis of E. granulosus infestation was made histologically. After 15 years' follow-up there were n

Onset of ossification of the tarsal bones in congenital clubfoot.

Subjects of this study were 45 patients with 56 idiopathic congenital clubfeet (34 boys with 42 feet and 11 girls with 14 feet) who underwent successful conservative treatment. Radiologic examinations were performed at intervals of 3 months. In anteroposterior radiographs of bilateral feet, the period of appearance of the ossification center was observed for the first, second, and third cuneiform and the tarsal navicular. The ossification of the tarsal bones in the congenital clubfeet occurred later than that in the unaffected feet in boys. The difference between the clubfeet and the unaffecte

Giant Cell Tumor in Tarsal Midfoot Bones: A Case Report.

Diffuse tenosynovial giant cell tumor (D-TGCT), previously known as pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS), is a benign, aggressive, and distracting proliferative synovial lesion. D-TGCT is commonly seen in large joints such as the knee and hip. We present the case of a 57-year-old female who initially presented with swelling on the left midfoot that increased over four years. Clinically, a ganglion was suspected on the left midfoot and an MRI showed a heterogeneous lobulated soft tissue mass on the superior aspect of the tarsal midfoot measuring 5.8 x 2.4 x 4.2 cm. The mass causing remodelin

Fractures of the central and third tarsal bones in horses.

The case histories and follow-up data for 11 horses with slab fractures of the central or 3rd tarsal bones were examined for information pertaining to the diagnosis, which was difficult to identify, treatment, which was proven ineffective, and the prognosis, which was shown to be poor for return to racing. The purpose of the study was to define the results that could be obtained by nonoperative methods, in an attempt to determine whether surgical treatment was advisable. Nine of the horses were Standardbreds and 2 were Thoroughbreds; all horses were 2 to 4 years old and were being exercised at

Osteochondrosis in the central and third tarsal bones of young horses.

Recently, the central and third tarsal bones of 23 equine fetuses and foals were examined using micro-computed tomography. Radiological changes, including incomplete ossification and focal ossification defects interpreted as osteochondrosis, were detected in 16 of 23 cases. The geometry of the osteochondrosis defects suggested they were the result of vascular failure, but this requires histological confirmation. The study aim was to examine central and third tarsal bones from the 16 cases and to describe the tissues present, cartilage canals, and lesions, including suspected osteochondrosis le

[Treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the tarsal bones with free muscle flaps].

Although the value of free muscle flaps in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis of the lower leg is well documented, only few reports deal with the use of free muscle flaps for treatment of osteomyelitis of the tarsal bones. Four patients with chronic osteomyelitis of the tarsal bones (in three patients several bones were involved) were treated using the following regimen: radical debridement, coverage with a free muscle flap, and systemic antibiotic therapy. In two patients, infection recurred following primary transplantation of the muscle flap. In one of these patients, recurrence was con

Incomplete ossification of the tarsal bones in foals: 22 cases (1988-1996).

OBJECTIVE: To determine outcome for foals with incomplete ossification of the tarsal bones and to determine whether clinical and radiographic abnormalities at the time of initial examination were associated with outcome. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 22 foals. PROCEDURE: Information on signalment, history, owner's initial complaint, clinical findings, whether tarsus valgus was evident, and radiographic abnormalities was obtained from medical records. Radiographic lesions were classified as type I (i.e., incomplete ossification with < 30% collapse of the affected bones) or type II (i

Köhler's bone disease of the tarsal navicular.

Fourteen patients with Köhler's bone disease of the tarsal navicular in 16 feet were reviewed at an average follow-up of 31 years 6 months after diagnosis. The type and length of treatment did not affect the final outcome; however, short-leg cast immobilization did decrease the duration of symptoms. Two feet were symptomatic at the time of follow-up: one foot had a talocalcaneal coalition with degenerative changes, and the other foot had a large accessory navicular. Both of these feet were rated as having a fair result. The remaining 12 feet were classified as having a good result. Patients wi

Associated Coalitions of Tarsal Bones: Review of the Literature and Presentation of a Classification.

Associated coalitions of tarsal bones, either unilateral or bilateral, may be classified to developmental or syndromic types. There are no specific patterns for osseous or nonosseous configurations of associated tarsal coalitions. Associated developmental tarsal coalitions can be categorized into dual, threefold, massive, and total tarsal coalitions according to the number and sites of the involved joints. Dual coalitions are more common than other types. Among dual tarsal coalitions, the most frequent combination is talocalcaneal (TC) and calcaneonavicular coalitions, also referred to as doub

Fractures in regions of adaptive modeling and remodeling of central tarsal bones in racing Greyhounds.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare bone modeling and remodeling in fractured and non-fractured central tarsal bones (CTBs) of racing Greyhounds. SAMPLE: Paired cadaveric tarsi from 6 euthanized racing Greyhounds with right CTB fractures and 6 racing Greyhounds with other nontarsal injuries. PROCEDURES: CTBs were dissected and fractured CTBs were reconstructed. Central tarsal bones were evaluated through standard and nonscreen high-detail radiography, computed tomography, and histologic examination. The bone mineral density (BMD) was calculated adjacent to fracture planes and as a gradient on

Volumetric quantitative computed tomography measurement precision for volumes and densities of tarsal and metatarsal bones.

Diabetic foot diseases, such as ulcerations, infections, and neuropathic (Charcot's) arthropathy, are major complications of diabetes mellitus (DM) and peripheral neuropathy (PN) and may cause osteolysis (bone loss) in foot bones. The purposes of our study were to make computed tomography (CT) measurements of foot-bone volumes and densities and to determine measurement precision (percent coefficients of variation for root-mean-square standard deviations) and least significant changes (LSCs) in these percentages that could be considered biologically real with 95% confidence. Volumetric quantita

Load response of the tarsal bones in patients with flatfoot deformity: in vivo 3D study.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to evaluate the bone rotation of each joint in the hindfoot and compare the load response in healthy feet with that in flatfeet by analyzing the reconstructive three-dimensional (3D) CT image data during weightbearing. METHODS: CT scans of 21 healthy feet and 21 feet with flatfoot deformity were taken in non-load condition followed by full-body weightbearing load condition. The images of the hindfoot bones were reconstructed into 3D models. The volume merge method in three planes was used to calculate the position of the talus relative to the tibia
