[Wernicke encephalopathy in a chronic peritoneal dialysis patient--correlation between diffusion MR and pathological findings].

Wernicke encephalopathy (WE) is a neurologic disorder caused by a nutritional deficiency of thiamine. Since the lesion in WE consists of brain edema, diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) is quite useful for detecting the pathologic changes in WE, and can differentiate between reversible extracellular (vasogenic) and irreversible cellular (cytotoxic) edema. We report here a 16-year-old man with WE who had been treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis for chronic renal failure. He underwent repeated DWI and postmortem examination. DWI, which was performed 8 days after the onset of neur

Allometric scaling of the optic tectum in cartilaginous fishes.

In cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes; sharks, skates and rays (batoids), and holocephalans), the midbrain or mesencephalon can be divided into two parts, the dorsal tectum mesencephali or optic tectum (analogous to the superior colliculus of mammals) and the ventral tegmentum mesencephali. Very little is known about interspecific variation in the relative size and organization of the components of the mesencephalon in these fishes. This study examined the relative development of the optic tectum and the tegmentum in 75 chondrichthyan species representing 32 families. This study also provide

Activation of RMTg projections to the VTA reverse cocaine-induced molecular adaptation in the reward system.

The rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) plays a crucial role in regulating reward-related behavior by exerting inhibitory control over the ventral tegmental area (VTA). This modulation of dopamine neuron activity within the VTA is essential for maintaining homeostasis in the reward system. Recently we have shown that activation of RMTg projections to the VTA during the acquisition of cocaine-conditioned place preference (CPP) reduces the rewarding properties of cocaine and decreases VTA dopamine neuron activity. By inhibiting dopamine neurons in the VTA, we hypothesized that RMTg projections

Whole-brain mapping of monosynaptic afferents to GABAergic neurons in the sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus of mice.

The sublaterodorsal tegmental nucleus (SLD) is a critical hub for regulating rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and muscle atonia, with its dysfunction linked to various disorders such as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) and cataplexy. Despite its physiological significance, the presynaptic patterns influencing SLD γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic neurons-one of the primary neuronal subtypes within the SLD-remain poorly understood. This study applied a modified rabies virus tracing system combined with a Cre/loxP-based genetic approach to map and quantify the whole-brain monosynaptic afferents to

Distribution of serotonin in the brain stem and spinal cord of the lizard Varanus exanthematicus: an immunohistochemical study.

The distribution of serotonin-containing nerve cell bodies, fibers and terminals in the lizard Varanus exanthematicus was studied with the indirect immunofluorescence technique, using antibodies to serotonin. Most of the serotonin-containing cell bodies were found in the midline, in both of the raphe nuclei, i.e. the nuclei raphes superior and inferior. A considerable number of more laterally shifted serotonergic neurons was found particularly at three levels of the brain stem, viz. in the caudal mesencephalic tegmentum, at the isthmic level, and over a long distance in the medulla oblongata.

Uncovering the Connectivity Logic of the Ventral Tegmental Area.

Decades of research have revealed the remarkable complexity of the midbrain dopamine (DA) system, which comprises cells principally located in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Neither homogenous nor serving a singular function, the midbrain DA system is instead composed of distinct cell populations that (1) receive different sets of inputs, (2) project to separate forebrain sites, and (3) are characterized by unique transcriptional and physiological signatures. To appreciate how these differences relate to circuit function, we first need to understand

Cerebellar projections to the macaque midbrain tegmentum: Possible near response connections.

Since most gaze shifts are to targets that lie at a different distance from the viewer than the current target, gaze changes commonly require a change in the angle between the eyes. As part of this response, lens curvature must also be adjusted with respect to target distance by the ciliary muscle. It has been suggested that projections by the cerebellar fastigial and posterior interposed nuclei to the supraoculomotor area (SOA), which lies immediately dorsal to the oculomotor nucleus and contains near response neurons, support this behavior. However, the SOA also contains motoneurons that sup

Cerebellar Inputs in the American Alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

Crocodilians (alligators, crocodiles, and gharials) are the closet living relatives to birds and, as such, represent a key clade to understand the evolution of the avian brain. However, many aspects of crocodilian neurobiology remain unknown. In this paper, we address an important knowledge gap as there are no published studies of cerebellar connections in any crocodilian species. We used injections of retrograde tracers into the cerebellum of the American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) to describe for the first time the origin of climbing and mossy fiber inputs. We found that inputs t

Nuclei and tracts in the pretectum and associated tegmentum of crocodiles.

In all vertebrates, the pretectum and associated tegmentum arise from prosomere 1, but the adult derivatives of these embryonic regions are not well defined in reptiles-especially in crocodiles, the reptilian group most closely related to birds. Despite its importance in vision and visuomotor behavior, descriptions of the pretectum in crocodiles are brief and photographs are lacking. To fill this gap in knowledge, the pretectum and associated tegmentum were examined in two crocodilians, Caiman crocodilus and Alligator mississippiensis, using a variety of histological stains in all three tradit

Efferent Axonal Projections of the Habenular Complex in the Fire-Bellied Toad Bombina orientalis.

The habenular complex and its associated axonal pathways are often thought of as phylogenetically conserved features of the brain among vertebrates despite the fact that detailed studies of this brain region are limited to a few species. Here, the gross morphology and axonal projection pattern of the habenular complex of an anuran amphibian, the fire-bellied toad Bombina orientalis, was studied to allow comparison with the situation in other vertebrates. Axonal pathways were traced using biocytin applications in dissected brain preparations. The results show that the rostral part of the left d

Decoding the dual regulatory systems: Contemporary insights into the lateral habenula and rostromedial tegmental nucleus physiology.

The lateral habenula (LHb) and the rostromedial tegmental nucleus (RMTg) are critical brain structures involved in reward processing, aversive signaling, and mood regulation. Recent research has uncovered significant progress in understanding their physiological functions, neural circuits, and implications in neuropsychiatric disorders. By integrating signals from the limbic system and projecting into the midbrain monoaminergic system, the LHb encodes negative reward prediction error and mediates behaviors associated with depressive as well as stress response. Its overactivation can inhibit do

[Divergence paralysis due to a lesion of the lateral tegmentum of the midbrain caused by thalamic hemorrhage].

A 66-year-old diabetic and hypertensive man suddenly developed right hemiplegia. Examination revealed right hemiplegia including his face, vertical gaze palsy, and divergence paralysis. The cranial CT scan disclosed a left thalamic hemorrhage as large as 40 mm in diameter, which extended to the midbrain. He was treated medically and his divergence paralysis improved. But all other symptoms remained for the next 11 months and he eventually died of acute retroperitoneal hemorrhage. The autopsy revealed spongy state and gliosis extending from the left thalamic nuclei to the left midbrain. In the

The interstitial nucleus of Cajal of the cat. I. Neurons activity related to vertical eye movements.

Interstitial nucleus of Cajal (INC) neurons activity was studied during vertical optokinetic nystagmus (OKN) and after-nystagmus (OKAN) in awake cats lying on their right side. The activity of one hundred neurons was recorded in the left INC and analysed in relation with the vertical component of OKN and OKAN. The activity of 27 neurons was correlated either to eye position or to both eye velocity and eye position; 18 of these neurons were recorded in their on-direction and their off-direction. The analysis of the 18 neurons showed that the activity of 8 of them was correlated to eye position

The development of the human brain, including the longitudinal zoning in the diencephalon at stage 15.

Twenty-six embryos (6-11 mm) of stage 15 (approximately 33 days) were studied in detail and graphic reconstructions of three of them were prepared. Characteristic features of this stage include closed lens vesicles, presence of nasal pits, and retinal pigment. The neuromeric pattern is still visible. Each cerebral hemisphere is limited by the torus hemisphericus internally and by the di-telencephalic sulcus externally. The medial (diencephalic) eminence of the basal nuclei (previously misinterpreted by others as the lateral) had appeared in stage 14, and the lateral eminence, which is telencep

Afferent and efferent connections of cerebellar lobe C1 of the mormyrid fish Gnathonemus petersi: an HRP study.

The corpus of the highly developed cerebellum of the weakly electric fish Gnathonemus petersi is differentiated into four lobes, numbered C1 to C4. The present paper deals with the extrinsic connections of the rostralmost lobe C1. Relevant nuclei were studied in normal histological material and HRP injections were placed in lobe C1, the neighbouring pedunculus valvulae, and the brainstem. The largest number of afferents to lobe C1 originates from the nucleus lateralis valvulae, a large nucleus of tightly packed small cells in the dorsal midbrain tegmentum. In Gnathonemus this nucleus encompass

[Pure sensory stroke due to pontine lacunar infarction].

A 72-year-old woman presented a sudden onset isolated sensory deficit of medial lemniscal type in the right half of the body. MRI showed a small lacune in the left paramedian pontine tegmentum corresponding to the location of the medial lemniscus. MRI appeared to be most valuable in the topographic delineation of lacunar infarctions which were responsible for pure sensory stroke.
