Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) describes the presenting manifestations of a disorder that is characterized by pathologic blood vessels. HHT is inherited as an autosomal dominant trait with variable penetrance. The abnormal vascular structures (dysplasias) can affect all the organs in the human body. The link between a physical stimulus and new lesion development has been established for mucosal trauma owing to nasal airflow turbulence, for ultraviolet exposure to the fingers, and for mechanical trauma to the dominant hand. The pressing question then is whether HHT treatment consti

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an autosomal dominant disorder, which affects various internal organs and has a tendency for bleeding. It has a classic triad of mucocutaneous telangiectasias, recurrent hemorrhages and positive familial history of first-degree relative. Epistaxis or gastrointestinal telangiectasia can be fatal in a small number of cases. CASE REPORT: A 44-year-old woman came with complaints of recurrent episodes of hematemesis and epistaxis. Patient had a family history of similar complaints. Patient underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), which

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome, is an autosomal dominant disorder that is characterized by multiple arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) involving the skin, mucosal surfaces, and internal organs. HHT has an age-dependent penetrance and usually initially presents with recurrent epistaxis followed by the characteristic telangiectasias of the face, oropharynx, and hands over time. Patients often have vascular malformations that involve their lungs, brain, spinal cord, and gastrointestinal tract as well, which are the main causes of morbidity in

[Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia].

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HTT, or Osler-Weber-Rendu disease) is a constitutional vascular dysplasia characterized by hemorrhagic manifestations, cutaneous or mucosal telangiectases and visceral shunting due to arteriovenous malformations. In France, its prevalence varies from 1/6,000 to 1/8,500. The diagnosis is clinical and based on the common triad: chronic epistaxis, responsible for anemias, cutaneous or mucosal telangiectases (on typical locations) and the hereditary nature of these signs inheredited in an autosomal dominant way. Penetrance is almost complete at 50 years. Visc

[Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia].

Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT) or Rendu-Osler-Weber disease is a genetic disorder with a dominant autosomic transmission. Its prevalence is estimated in one in 5-8,000 individuals. Two different mutations have been described involving endoglin and ALK-1 genes, resulting in HHT type 1 and 2 respectively. It is characterized by the occurrence of spontaneous and recurrent episodes of epistaxis, telangiectasias and the presence of visceral arteriovenous malformations (mainly affecting lungs, liver, brain and digestive tract) which are responsible for the clinical manifestations and co

[Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia].

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, also known as Rendu-Osler - Weber disease, is a rare, autosomal dominant vascular disease, with prevalence of 1/5,000. The condition is characterized by muco-cutaneous telangiectasias, which are responsible for a hemorrhagic syndrome of variable severity, as well as arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) appearing in the lungs, the liver, and the nervous system. They can be the source of shunts, which may be associated with high morbidity (neurological ischemic stroke, brain abscess, high-output heart failure, biliary ischemia…). It is therefore crucial to es

[Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia].

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (Osler-Weber-Rendu syndrome) is a development disorder of the vasculature characterized by telangiectases and arteriovenous malformations in specific locations. Among monogenic disorders, it is one of the most common, though affected individuals are widely underdiagnosed. The most common features of this disorder, nosebleeds, and telangiectases on the lips, hands, and oral mucosa are often quite subtle. Mutations in at least five genes may result in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, but mutations in two genes (ENG and ACVRL1/ALK1) account for approxim

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu disease, is a rare disorder characterized by arteriovenous communications in visceral organs. The diagnosis of HHT consists of recurrent epistaxis, mucocutaneous telangiectasis, visceral vascular lesion and familial occurrence. HHT can be definitely diagnosed with the presence of all these three criteria. The prevalence of liver involvement of HHT was reported to range from 8 to 31%. Herein, we present a 75-year-old male who was diagnosed as having HHT with liver involvement, based on the findings of recurrent epistax

Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia Management.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) is an inherited disorder that can lead to frequent and severe sequelae. Although the condition has no cure, many of its physical symptoms can be managed to improve the quality of life and lower the risk of life-threatening complications. This article discusses HHT presentation, genetic screening, diagnosis, and management. The management of HHT can involve interventional radiology techniques, particularly for patients with pulmonary arteriovenous malformations.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia/avastin.

This is the first scientific report of hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) epistaxis treatment by intranasal spraying of the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitor bevacizumab (Avastin). Epistaxis in patients with HHT is a morbid, mortal condition that is difficult and unpleasant to manage. Nasal telangiectasia growth is modulated by VEGF, which is elevated in HHT patients. Bevacizumab is a VEGF inhibitor that diminishes epistaxis when administered intravenously or injected locally, or as reported here when sprayed topically onto the nasal mucosa.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia - pediatric review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) diagnostic and management approach for pediatrics underwent significant advances over the last couple of years. RECENT FINDINGS: In 2020, new guidelines for HHT were published that included a pediatric section thus attracting special focus into the childhood presentation. SUMMARY: Curacao criteria are specific, but not sensitive enough in children. Genetic testing is encouraged for all family members even if asymptomatic. Standardized scoring for epistaxis is strongly encouraged, as it allows monitoring and can stratify therapeut

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia and pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia is a rare but life-threatening disease characterized by telangiectasias and arteriovenous malformations in different organs. When it is associated with pregnancy, this disease causes significant morbidity and mortality. CASE: We describe the pregnancy course of a primigravida with severe hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia. Her antepartum course was complicated by reduced pulmonary function, mild tricuspid regurgitation, and mild pulmonary hypertension. An amniocentesis was performed at the 32nd week for hydramnios. Because of a nonreassurin

Gastric predominant hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) or Rendu-Osler-Weber disease is an autosomal-dominant disorder that frequently presents with epistaxis and gastrointestinal bleeding which may be a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. We describe a 48-year-old monk with familiar history of HHT, who presented with frequent epistaxes and symptoms of ferropenic anemia. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed innumerable telangiectasias in the stomach. The patient underwent three sessions with argon plasma coagulation treatment but the results were poor. We also review the literature on the pathophys

Angiography in hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia is a vascular disorder with stigmata in any part of the body. The most frequently reported sites of internal lesions are the lungs, liver and gastrointestinal tract. When one lesion is observed on chest radiography or on splanchnic angiography there is reason to include other vascular areas in the investigation. A normal angiographic finding does not exclude the presence of telangiectasia.
