BACKGROUND: In children, frequent congenital malformations with concomitant agenesis of the corpus callosum are diagnosed by neuroimaging in association with other cerebral malformations, including interhemispheric cysts and ventriculomegaly. Similar studies providing full characterization of brain defects by in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and correlations with the pertinent anatomic pathologic examinations are absent in veterinary medicine.
HYPOTHESIS/OBJECTIVES: Congenital brain defects underlie the neurologic signs observed in Toyger cats selectively bred for a short ear phenoty

The corpus callosum is the largest of the 3 telencephalic commissures in eutherian (placental) mammals. Although the anterior commissure, and the hippocampal commissure before being pushed dorsally by the expanding frontal lobes, cross through the lamina reuniens (upper part of the lamina terminalis), the callosal fibers need a transient interhemispheric cellular bridge to cross. This review describes the molecular pathways that initiate the specification of the cells comprising this bridge, the specification of the callosal neurons, and the repulsive and attractive guidance molecules that con

We present an MRI-based anatomic analysis of a series of 9 human brains, representing lobar, semilobar and alobar forms of holoprosencephaly. The analysis of these variable forms of the malformation is based upon a topologic systematics established in a prior analysis of a homogeneous set of semilobar malformations. This systematics has the dual advantage that it serves both as a uniform reference for qualitative description and as a quantitative descriptive base for mathematical correlations between parameters of topology and of growth and development. Within this systematics, the prosencepha

We analysed the MRI findings in 23 patients with callosal dysgenesis in relation to their associated telencephalic anomalies to investigate the morphological significance of the development of Probst's bundles and the anterior commissure in congenital callosal dysgenesis. We classified callosal dysgenesis into three types: total defect (9 patients), partial defect (7) and hypoplasia (7). Associated anomalies were observed in 15 patients, including migration disorder (8 patients), micrencephaly (5), and lipoma (2). The remaining 8 patients had no associated anomalies. Probst's bundles were not

We present an MRI-based anatomic analysis of a series of seven human brains with the semilobar form of holoprosencephaly. The analysis defines a set of common descriptors for a pattern of topological anomaly which is uniform for the set of seven brains. The core of the anomaly is a rostro-caudally aligned midline gray matter 'seam' that extends from the telencephalic-suprachiasmatic junctional region to abut the posterior aspect of the callosal commissure. The seam forms the ventricular roof throughout its extent. Rostrally it is formed by the conjoined heads of caudate/accumbens nuclei. It co

An inherited neurologic syndrome in a family of mixed-breed Oriental cats has been characterized as forebrain commissural malformation, concurrent with ventriculomegaly and interhemispheric cysts. However, the genetic basis for this autosomal recessive syndrome in cats is unknown. Forty-three cats were genotyped on the Illumina Infinium Feline 63K iSelect DNA Array and used for analyses. Genome-wide association studies, including a sib-transmission disequilibrium test and a case-control association analysis, and homozygosity mapping, identified a critical region on cat chromosome A3. This study compares a whole brain of the dwarf sperm whale (Kogia sima) with that of a common dolphin (Delphinus delphis) using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Kogia brain was scanned with a Siemens Trio Magnetic Resonance scanner in the three main planes. As in the common dolphin and other marine odontocetes, the brain of the dwarf sperm whale is large, with the telencephalic hemispheres remarkably dominating the brain stem. The neocortex is voluminous and the cortical grey matter thin but expansive and densely convoluted. The corpus callosum is thin and the anterior com

This work examines the connectivity of the olfactory bulb in the gynmotiform fish Apteronotus leptorhynchus. Wheat germ agglutinin conjugated horseradish peroxidase was iontophoresed in different areas and depths of the bulb in order to define its efferent and afferent connections. The olfactory bulb projects bilaterally via the medial (medial and centromedial fascicles) and lateral olfactory (lateral and centrolateral fascicles) tracts. The nervus terminalis courses through the ventromedial aspect of the bulb to terminate in parts of the medial subpallium and hypothalamus. Its telencephalic c

Hyh mutant mice develop long-lasting hydrocephalus and represent a good model for investigating neuropathologic events associated with hydrocephalus. The study of their brains by use of lectin binding, bromodeoxyuridine labeling, immunochemistry, and scanning electron microscopy revealed that certain events related to hydrocephalus followed a well-defined pattern. A program of neuroepithelium/ependyma denudation was initiated at embryonic day 12 and terminated at the end of the second postnatal week. After the third postnatal week the denuded areas remained permanently devoid of ependyma. In c

A series of 78 patients presenting with agenesis of the cerebral commissures and properly investigated with MR imaging, was reviewed and analyzed morphologically. Results were compared with descriptive data from the literature, and with the developmental models proposed. From this, a model of a-commissural brain is described: the lamina terminalis would be homologous to a telencephalic anterior medullary velum of which the commissure would be the anterior commissure, and the lamina of white matter described as the Probst's and the fornical bundles, would be homologous to a posterior medullary

There are three telencephalic commissures which are paleocortical (the anterior commissure), archicortical (the hippocampal commissure), and neocortical. In non-placental mammals, the neocortical commissural fibers cross the midline together with the anterior and possibly the hippocampal commissure, across the lamina reuniens (joining plate) in the upper part of the lamina terminalis. In placental mammals, a phylogenetically new feature emerged, which is the corpus callosum: it results from an interhemispheric fusion line with specialized groups of mildline glial cells channeling the commissur

A 45-year-old right-handed patient with total callosal agenesis and absence of the anterior commissure was examined neuropsychologically and with magnetic resonance and positron emission tomography (PET with 18FDG) of the brain. PET results showed, in the resting state, a bilateral metabolic reduction in the hippocampal formation and a left hemispheric reduction in the amygdala, thalamus and in the occipital and temporoparietal junction areas of the cerebral cortex. Under speech activation hypermetabolic glucose activity was observed bilaterally in the region of the Wernicke area and within th

The corpus callosum is the most important cerebral commissure allowing axonal fibres to cross the midline. Corpus callosum agenesis is an important condition in man that can reveal numerous genetic syndromes. The corpus callosum develops from the commissural plate, a dorsal region of the telencephalon. Then, axons growing from pyramidal neurons of cortical layer III extend and cross the midline. In experimental models, it is possible to decipher two conditions in which the development of the corpus callosum is impaired. The first condition is characterized by an impairment of the formation of

In the terrestrial slug, Limax, eyes are located at the tip of the superior tentacles. This animal has long been believed to show negative phototaxis through tropotaxis, i.e., it compares the two light intensities detected by bilateral eyes to move away from a light source. As one of the possible manifestations of such negative phototaxis, a circling movement has been observed: if one of the superior tentacles is removed, the slugs continuously move in the direction of the removed side. However, there has been no evidence demonstrating that this behavior is actually based on negative phototrop

OBJECTIVE: We sought to categorize the structural brain anomalies associated with abnormalities of the corpus callosum and anterior and hippocampal commissures in a large cohort.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Brain MR images of adult and pediatric patients from our institution and from a national support organization (the ACC Network) were retrospectively evaluated for the type and severity of commissural anomalies and the presence and type of other structural abnormalities.
RESULTS: Of 142 cases that were reviewed, 82 patients had agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC), while 60 had hypogenesis of

The anterior commissure (AC) and the much smaller hippocampal commissure constitute the only interhemispheric pathways at the telencephalic level in birds. Since the degeneration study from Zeier and Karten (), no detailed description of the topographic organization of the AC has been performed. This information is not only necessary for a better understanding of interhemispheric transfer in birds, but also for a comparative analysis of the evolution of commissural systems in the vertebrate classes. We therefore examined the fiber connections of the AC by using choleratoxin subunit B (CTB) and

The distribution of thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) in the brain of the adult zebrafish was studied with immunohistochemical techniques. In the telencephalon, abundant TRH-immunoreactive (TRHir) neurons were observed in the central, ventral, and supra- and postcommissural regions of the ventral telencephalic area. In the diencephalon, TRHir neurons were observed in the anterior parvocellular preoptic nucleus, the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the lateral hypothalamic nucleus, the rostral parts of the anterior tuberal nucleus and torus lateralis, and the posterior tuberal nucleus. Some TRHir neu

The cytoarchitectonics of the telencephalon of the channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus, are described as a basis for experimental analysis of telencephalic afferents and efferents. The olfactory bulb comprises: (1) an outer layer of olfactory nerve fibers, (2) a glomerular layer, (3) an external cell layer, (4) an inner fiber layer, and (5) an internal cell layer. The telencephalic hemispheres comprise the areas ventralis and dorsalis telencephali. The area ventralis consists of: (1) a precommissural, periventricular zone including nucleus 'nother (Vn), the ventral nucleus (Vv), and the dorsa
