Changing patterns of telework in spain: the growing gap between preference and practice among teleworkers.

Drawing on nationally representative data from the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE), this study examines changes in teleworking among teleworkers in Spain between 2021 and 2022; two key years marking the transition from pandemic-driven remote work to the consolidation of hybrid models. Using two waves of nationally representative cross-sectional data from 4,606 teleworkers, results reveal a significant decrease in teleworking frequency, accompanied by a simultaneous improvement in employees' overall evaluations of the experience, indicating growing maturity and acceptance of remo

Effects of a telework environment intervention on work setup behaviors and somatic symptoms among Japanese teleworkers: a secondary analysis of the TELEWORK cluster randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Home workspace ergonomics may influence telework-related somatic symptoms; however, evidence regarding interventions promoting teleworkers' self-directed environment setup remains limited. We examined the effects of a behavioral science-based educational intervention on telework environment setup behaviors and somatic symptoms among Japanese employees. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the TELEWORK cluster randomized controlled trial (UMIN000053861). Workplace departments were randomized as clusters (1:1) to intervention/control. The 12-week program comprised educational e

The impact of teleworking on employee idea generation: a self-determination theory perspective.

Drawing on self-determination theory, this study examines how teleworking influences employee idea generation and clarifies the motivational mechanism and leadership boundary condition underlying this relationship. We propose that teleworking facilitates employee idea generation by enhancing work autonomy, and that empowering leadership strengthens the extent to which teleworking is experienced as usable autonomy. Study 1 used a between-subjects experimental design and showed that participants in the high remote work condition reported higher creative idea generation than those in the low remo

Telework and Mental Health during COVID-19.

COVID-19 has come to change societal organization. Due to lockdowns, work typologies have been rethought and telework has gained strength. However, the impact of the constant use of information and communication technologies on the mental health of workers needs to be considered. We aimed to investigate the impact of different work conditions on mental health, to which end we disseminated an online questionnaire during lockdowns to assess imagined surveillance, mobile maintenance expectation, communication overload, feelings of entrapment, depression, anxiety, stress, and flourishing in four g

Telework After COVID: A "Silver Lining" for Workers with Disabilities?

Purpose The COVID pandemic was a severe blow to all workers, but it may ultimately have a silver lining for some workers with disabilities if it makes work from home easier and more acceptable. In addition, the pandemic is shaking up traditional workplace structures and causing employers to rethink how essential tasks can be done, which may broaden their views of workplace accommodations. We assess the potential for the pandemic to improve employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Methods This article analyzes pre-COVID data on disability and home-based work from three representat

Teleworking by hospital pharmacists: Another step to achieve decarbonization of the healthcare system.

PURPOSE: The healthcare sector contributes approximately 4% to 5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, thereby impacting climate change. Various initiatives, including teleworking, have been considered to mitigate GHG emissions, but their environmental impact remains poorly defined in the healthcare sector. This study aims to evaluate the impact of teleworking by hospital pharmacists on GHG emissions reduction by comparing the actual situation at one Canadian hospital, which includes teleworking shifts from home, to a scenario where all working shifts necessitate travel to the hospital.

Importance of occupation in the increase of gender differences in the advance of telework in Spain.

The COVID-19 pandemic significantly altered forms of labor. In this analysis, which focuses on the Spanish labor market, we consider telework from a gender-based perspective in order to identify whether there is a gender gap in this work form and, if so, whether this is impacted by occupation. The methodology is quantitative in nature, and we apply logistic regression based on data from Eurofound's European Working Conditions Survey. We investigate how factors including labor characteristics, education, and life stage and cohabitation affect the propensity to engage in telework. The findings r

Telework during the pandemic: Patterns, challenges, and opportunities for people with disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Telework has benefits for many people with disabilities. The pandemic may create new employment opportunities for people with disabilities by increasing employer acceptance of telework, but this crucially depends on the occupational structure. OBJECTIVE: We compare people with and without disabilities in the expansion of telework as the pandemic began, and the evolution of telework during the pandemic. METHODS: We use U.S. data from the American Community Survey from 2008 to 2020 and the Current Population Survey over May 2020 to April 2022 period. Prevalence and trends are analy

Multicomponent occupational lifestyle intervention to improve physical activity, musculoskeletal health, and work environment among Japanese teleworkers (TELEWORK study): protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: Teleworking from home was widespread during the 2019 coronavirus disease pandemic. This working practice is expected to maintain popularity among employers and employees. Compared with in-person workers, teleworkers tend to be less physically active and have more musculoskeletal pain. Interventions specific to reducing health risks among teleworkers have not been identified. This study will examine the effects of an occupational lifestyle intervention encompassing 3 components: physical activity promotion, musculoskeletal health, and work environment improvement. METHODS: This clu

Health of teleworkers: a scoping review on the assessment of the work-from-home environment.

OBJECTIVES: Inappropriate telework environments, including work-from-home (WFH) settings, have been linked to physical and mental health problems. However, no systematic assessment has been conducted regarding the WFH environment (WFH-E). The aim of this study was to clarify the current methods used to assess the WFH-E and its association with health- and work-related outcomes through a scoping review. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Ichushi for literature published since 2010 on WFH-E assessment. Based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses

Telework perceptions in hospital workers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic-the ADAPTAWORK2 study.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed work organization in hospitals, notably with the expansion of telework. This study aimed to assess perceptions of telework among hospital workers throughout the pandemic and to identify factors associated with telework perceptions in the post-pandemic period. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2023. All hospital workers, regardless of their occupation or status, were invited to participate in an online survey. Perceptions of telework were assessed using visual analog scales, ranging from 0 (very negative) to 100 (very

Health impacts with telework on workers: A scoping review before the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Telework has dramatically increased due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, and the health impacts related to telework have become major concerns. Some studies have shown that telework has both positive and negative impacts. However, during the pandemic, the influence of COVID-19 is too strong to estimate the health effects of telework. Therefore, this scoping review investigated a comprehensive overview of those impacts based on studies conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: We searched keywords related to telework in five databases: PubMed, Scopus, Cum
