Injuries to the biceps and triceps tendons about the elbow are relatively infrequent. Typically, they are traumatic events that occur as a result of a forceful eccentric contraction. Early recognition of these injuries and prompt intervention are the cornerstones to a successful outcome. Acute anatomic repair of complete injuries offers predictably good results. Conservative management, on the other hand, is typically reserved for partial injuries with little functional compromise, and for patients unfit for surgery. The challenges posed by chronic injuries can be addressed with a variety of s

Flexor tendon injuries are complex, and management of these injuries requires consideration of the surgical timing, injury location, approach, and soft tissue handling. Complications are common, including adhesions, tendon rupture, infection, and a high reoperation rate for zone 2 repairs. Special considerations are given to chronic ruptures, concomitant fractures, and pediatric cases. We discuss current concepts that may improve patient outcomes.

Triceps tendon injuries are an uncommon clinical entity poorly described in the literature. This review discusses the spectrum of pathology, effective diagnosis, nonsurgical treatment, surgical treatment, rehabilitation, and surgical complications of triceps tendon injuries. Management of triceps tendinopathies depends on the mechanism of injury and the patient's motor examination. Triceps tendinopathies and partial tendon tears with intact strength can be managed conservatively with rest, ice, immobilization, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical therapy. If conservative manageme

Peroneal tendon injuries are underdiagnosed and should be considered in every patient who presents with chronic lateral ankle pain. Ankle sprains are common, and up to 40% of affected individuals experience subsequent chronic ankle pain. Identifying the source of chronic ankle pain can be difficult because of the large number of possible causes. The peroneal tendons are the primary evertors of the foot and function as lateral ankle stabilizers. A careful physical examination, along with a thorough patient history and imaging studies, are critical in arriving at an accurate diagnosis. Understan

This article provides a comprehensive overview of hand tendon injuries. It has been tailored towards healthcare professionals who will be the first to assess these injuries and instigate appropriate management. It discusses the essential hand anatomy to be aware of, how to assess tendon injuries, their initial management and also the definitive surgical interventions used, if required. Rehabilitation techniques are also discussed, as this is also key to good functional outcomes. Missed injuries, or delay in their diagnosis and referral to specialist hand surgeons, can cause a large amount of m

INTRODUCTION: The aim of study was to analyze risk factors, mechanisms of injury, symptoms and time that elapsed from injury until operation of complete quadriceps tendon ruptures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This retrospective multicenter study included 30 patients operated for this injury, of whom 28 (93.3%) were men. The average age was 53.7 years (18-73). Twenty-six patients had reconstruction of unilateral rupture and four of bilateral one.
RESULTS: Eighty percent of them had some risk factors for rupture of the tendon with degenerative changes. Eight patients had diabetes, seven patients wer

The extensor mechanism of the fingers, hand, wrist, and forearm is extremely intricate. Disruptions to the extensor system are common and can be associated with poor patient outcomes when not treated appropriately. Although extensor tendon injuries receive much less attention in the literature than flexor tendon injuries do, several recent studies have examined this topic. This article presents an overview of the treatment of extensor tendon injuries, with a focus on recent developments.

Peroneal tendon pathology is a common cause of lateral ankle pain. Because of the difficulty of distinguishing peroneal tendon injuries from lateral ligament injuries in the setting of ankle trauma, early diagnosis is often missed. Failure to recognize and adequately treat these injuries can result in significant long-term disability. Focused history and physical examination are critical, as is a thorough understanding of the local anatomy and biomechanics involved. Acute injuries may be successfully treated conservatively; however, chronic injuries have demonstrated unsatisfactory response to

A thorough knowledge of anatomy, injury patterns, repair techniques, and evolving rehabilitation methods is necessary to best treat extensor tendon injuries. These injuries are conceptualized as occurring in one of eight zones, which are numbered distally to proximally in the hand and forearm. Even though surgical technique and rehabilitation are specific in each zone, injuries over and proximal to the proximal interphalangeal joint tend to yield less satisfactory results. Dynamic postoperative extension splinting is one factor that is improving long-term results.

Distal triceps ruptures are uncommon, usually caused by a fall on an outstretched hand or a direct blow. Factors linked to injury include eccentric loading of a contracting triceps, anabolic steroid use, weightlifting, and traumatic laceration. Risk factors include local steroid injection, hyperparathyroidism, and olecranon bursitis. Initial diagnosis can be complicated by pain and swelling, and a palpable defect is not always present. Plain radiographs can be helpful. MRI confirms the diagnosis and directs treatment. Incomplete tears can be treated nonsurgically; complete tears are best manag

Professional ballet dancers require an extraordinary anatomic, physiologic, and psychologic makeup to achieve and sustain their level of ability and activity. They are subject to a myriad of injuries as a result of the extreme demands of this profession. Tendon injuries are common and often coexist with other pathologies of the bone, ligaments, and psyche. It is critical that the dance doctor not examine the tendon injury in isolation, but rather the cause of the injury, either intrinsic from anatomic malalignment or from external sources, including poor form.

Frequently used zone 2 flexor tendon repair splints are reviewed and classified according to the American Society of Hand Therapists' Splint Classification System. These splints both restrict and mobilise digital motion and fall into two main groups: (1) splints that incorporate the wrist and digital joints as primary joints to allow predetermined increments of early passive or active motion at both the wrist and digital joints; and (2) splints that include the wrist as a secondary joint and the digital joints as primary joints, allowing early passive or active motion at digital joints but not

Overuse injuries of the Achilles tendon are common in patients engaging in recreational athletics. Achilles tendon overuse injuries exist as a spectrum of diseases ranging from inflammation of the paratendinous tissue (paratenonitis), to structural degeneration of the tendon (tendinosis), and finally tendon rupture. Factors known to predispose patients to Achilles tendinitis include inadequate stretching, training errors, mechanical malalignment of the lower extremities, rigid training surfaces, and occasionally systemic disease. Treatment of the patient with paratenonitis and tendinosis is in

The treatment of tendinopathies can be challenging due to the wide heterogeneity in their clinical presentation, variable disease chronicity, and the lack of standardized treatment approaches. Orthobiologics such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP), bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC), and patch augmentation have been utilized with increasing frequency for the treatment of tendon injuries, but the evidence to support their routine use is mixed. This review summarizes the current clinical literature evaluating the efficacy of PRP, BMAC, and patch augmentation in the treatment of common tendon dis

The extensor tendons in the dorsum of the hand lie relatively superficially, making open injuries to the extensor mechanism a common source of morbidity. These injuries can range from simple clean lacerations to complex open injuries associated with severe skin and soft tissue loss. Although many advances in the treatment of tendon injuries focused on the flexor tendon, the extensor tendon has begun to receive more attention in recent literature. Knowledge of modern repair techniques and rehabilitation protocols may improve patient outcomes. This Current Concepts article summarizes the treatme

Daily activities, such as walking or running, put a certain degree of stress and demand on the tendons of the lower extremities. To date, there are very few reported cases in the literature concerning pathology of the anterior tibial tendon or muscle. Of those cases reported and discussed, the majority were complete ruptures as a result of an acute forced injury, with very few reports of secondary pathological conditions or laceration injuries. This article is a review of the literature, as well as conservative versus surgical treatment and the sequelae following such injuries.
