Tensile strength of healing peripheral nerves.

Although the time required for a nerve to gain sufficient strength to withstand normal physiologic forces of joint motion is unknown, typically nerve repairs are protected up to 3 weeks postoperatively. The authors investigated the mechanical strength of a nerve repair as a function of time. Fifty adult Sprague-Dawley rats underwent sciatic nerve division and repair, and were sacrificed in groups of 10 at 0, 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Repaired nerves were then mechanically loaded at 5 mm/min to failure. Gapping across the repair site was captured on high-resolution video. The contralateral sciatic

Infliximab treatment reduces tensile strength in intestinal anastomosis.

BACKGROUND: The antitumor necrosis factor (infliximab [IFX]) has gained widespread use in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. However, several patients must undergo surgical treatment due to treatment failure and there is a potential risk that preoperative IFX treatment may have a negative effect on the healing process in intestinal anastomosis. The objective of this study was to examine the effect of repeated IFX treatment on anastomotic strength and degree of inflammation in the anastomotic line in the small intestine of rabbits. METHODS: Thirty-two rabbits were randomized (2:1) to

Tensile strength of surgical knots in abdominal wound closure.

Abdominal wound dehiscence is a surgical catastrophe that can be attributed to patients or technical factors. The technical properties of the monofilament sutures and knots that are commonly used in abdominal closure are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to compare the tensile strength of monofilament sutures tied with conventional knots. To do this, the knot-holding capacity of four types of knots (square, surgeons', Aberdeen and loop) were tested using three types of gauge 1 monofilament suture, namely nylon, polyglyconate and polydioxanone, using a tensiometer. We found that the

Fibronectin matrix polymerization increases tensile strength of model tissue.

The composition and organization of the extracellular matrix (ECM) contribute to the mechanical properties of tissues. The polymerization of fibronectin into the ECM increases actin organization and regulates the composition of the ECM. In this study, we examined the ability of cell-dependent fibronectin matrix polymerization to affect the tensile properties of an established tissue model. Our data indicate that fibronectin polymerization increases the ultimate strength and toughness, but not the stiffness, of collagen biogels. A fragment of fibronectin that stimulates mechanical tension gener

Corrosion of High-Strength Steel Wires under Tensile Stress.

The stress corrosion cracking is the central issue for high-strength wires under high tensile stress used in civil engineering. This paper explores the resistance of stress corrosion cracking of three typical steel wires of high-strength carbon through a laboratory test, combining the actions of tensile stress and corrosive solution. Besides, the impact of tensile stress and immersion time are also investigated. During the tests, the wires were subject to electrochemical measurements of potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the microstructure analysis was

Does Valve Design Affect the Tensile Strength of Ventriculoperitoneal Shunts?

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The most common treatment for hydrocephalus is ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunting, which is problematic as shunts are prone to failure. Shunt disconnections account for a minority (8%-15%) of VP shunt failures but could be reduced through better shunt design. A better understanding of the mechanical properties of VP shunts would help explain why shunt disconnections occur. The objective of this study was to determine if the tensile properties of VP shunts differ by design. METHODS: Linear tensile testing was conducted on 5 different valve designs (Codman Certas Plus

Micromechanics Modeling of Transverse Tensile Strength for Unidirectional CFRP Composite.

Transverse tensile strength of unidirectional (UD) composites plays a key role in overall failure of fiber-reinforced composites. To predict this strength by micromechanics, calculation of actual stress in constituent matrix is essentially required. However, traditional micromechanics models can only give the volume-averaged homogenized stress rather than an actual one for a matrix, which in practice will cause large errors. In this paper, considering the effect of stress concentration on a matrix, a novel micromechanics method was proposed to give an accurate calculation of the actual stress
