This work seeks to alert medical and odontological staff to understanding and using interdisciplinary handling for detecting different pathologies common otic symptoms. It offers better tools for this shared symptomatology during therapy s conservative phase. Tensor tympani muscle physiology and function in the middle ear have been veiled, even when their dysfunction and anatomical relationships may explain a group of confused otic symptoms during conventional clinical evaluation. Middle ear muscles share a common embryological and functional origin with chewing and facial muscles. This articl

BACKGROUND: Tensor tympani contraction may have a "signature" audiogram. This study demonstrates audiometric findings during voluntary tensor tympani contraction.
METHODS: Five volunteers possessing the ability to voluntarily contract their tensor tympani muscles were identified and enrolled. Tensor tympani contraction was confirmed with characteristic tympanometry findings. Study subjects underwent conventional audiometry. Air conduction and bone conduction threshold testing was performed with and without voluntary tensor tympani contraction.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Changes in air conduction

Click evoked electromyographic (EMG) recordings were made from the contralateral tensor tympani muscle of anaesthetised mice. The mean threshold of the EMG response was around 50 dB SPL (peak equivalent) with a mean latency close to 4 ms. The mean amplitude of the response increased over a range of 70 dB to reach a level of around 150 microV with a mean latency around 3.5 ms. The tensor tympani muscle activity was investigated also in profoundly hearing-impaired mutant mice with either cochlear dysfunction (deafness) or brainstem dysfunction (quivering). No evoked EMG activity was detected in

Two patients complained of severe vertigo following eructation or hiccup. One patient was poststapedectomy; the other had idiopathic cochlear degeneration. The symptoms were reproduced by Hennebert's test in the pathologic ear. The tensor tympani was transected in both patients. An endolymphatic sac procedure was performed concomitantly in the second patient. Both patients had immediate relief of symptoms. It is hypothesized that these reflex phenomena, which elicited vertigo, were accompanied by tensor tympani contraction, which resulted in medial movement of the stapes or prosthesis, and tha

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders are associated with symptoms such as tinnitus, vertigo, sensation of hearing loss, ear fullness and otalgia. The connection and dysfunction of the tensor tympani and tensor veli palatini muscles seems to be associated with the aforementioned symptoms. We seek to demonstrate and explain this connection through the morphometry of these structures.
METHODS: We studied 22 paired blocks and 1 left side of human temporal bone. Digital measurements were made of the tensor tympani muscles and stapes.
RESULTS: The average length of the stapedia

Involvement of the tensor tympani muscle (TTM) and tendon in otitis media have been suggested both clinically and experimentally. Extensive postmortem histopathological studies of the human TTM in cases with known otitis media have not been done. One-hundred-five human temporal bones with and without otitis media were evaluated using light microscopy to determine the pathological changes of the TTM and tendon. Fatty cell infiltration and degenerative changes of the muscle fibers were observed in non-otitis and otitis media groups, but were greater in those cases with otitis media. Inflammatory

The initial stages of carcinoma of the nasopharynx may be manifested by different types of impaired hearing. The Eustachian tube may be obstructed by a tumour or its orifice compressed, sometimes the tumour penetrates into the middle ear. The authors discuss the position which may develop in infiltration of the semicanalis m. tensoris tympani and how functional disorders of this muscle may be manifested. They describe the provoked reflex of this muscle by trimolar acetic asid and investigate tympanometric reactions of this artificially provoked contraction of the m. tensor tympani in patients

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To evaluate the acoustic effect after canal wall-down tympanoplasty with sectioning of the tensor tympani muscle (TTM) tendon in patients with chronic otitis media.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled clinical trial.
METHODS: From January 2010 to April 2014, 212 patients underwent canal wall-down tympanoplasty with ossicular chain reconstruction in one-stage surgery. For this study, the patients were assigned to two groups. In group 1 (107 patients), the TTM tensor would be removed during the surgery, whereas it would be retained in group 2 (105 patients). HYPOTHESIS: Voluntary eardrum movement (VEM) and resultant tympanometric changes reflect tensor tympani (TT) contraction.
BACKGROUND: TT contraction has been hypothesized to cause symptoms of aural fullness, tinnitus, clicking, and even vertigo despite the lack of understanding of how it functions or what causes it to contract. Identifying tympanometric changes unique to TT contraction can provide a diagnostic tool for identifying its role in pathologic conditions.
METHODS: Various tympanometric measurements were performed on human subjects who could voluntarily move their eardrums. These we

In a patient with unilateral lower motoneuron facial paralysis secondary to Bell's palsy, we evaluated the characteristics of what we believe to be an acoustically-evoked reflex contraction of the tensor tympani muscle. Ipsilateral stimulation of the involved ear yielded a pattern of impedance change different from the pattern characterizing normal stapedius muscle contraction. Threshold of the reflex was elevated, amplitude was large and variable, onset latency was greater, onset rise was more gradual, and offset decay was more rapid. Contralateral stimulation, with probe in the involved ear,

The tensor tympani muscle is structurally important in the middle ear, specifically through its involvement in the impedance of sound in response to intense auditory and non-auditory stimuli. Despite numerous studies, its true function has been debated for many years; questions still remain about its role in auditory and non-auditory reflexes and in sound damping. Some studies suggest that the tensor tympani muscle contracts as a result of non-auditory stimulation such as facial or head movements; others suggest that it contracts due to input from the cochlear nucleus, therefore by way of audi

UNLABELLED: Tenotomy of the tensor tympani and stapedius tendons in Ménière's disease.
OBJECTIVE: In Ménière's disease (MD), when patients have incapacitating vertigo that is resistant to drug treatment, an intratympanic gentamicin application (ITG) is often proposed. Recently, some authors suggested that tenotomy, sectioning of the tensor tympani and stapedius tendons, could be a promising treatment. We examined whether tenotomy (ST) has additional benefit, compared to ITG alone, with respect to tinnitus, vertigo, and quality of life.
METHODOLOGY: We conducted a retrospective survey of the

BACKGROUND: The tensor tympani muscle is the largest muscle within the middle ear. Its voluntary contraction is a very unusual event. Only a few papers have documented its audiometric effects.
OBJECTIVE: To report an unusual case of voluntary tensor tympani muscle contraction and describe its audiometric effects.
CASE REPORT: A 27-year-old man, who presented complaining of voluntarily evoked bilateral tinnitus, was found to be able to voluntarily contract the tensor tympani muscle in both ears simultaneously. Audiograms were performed under conditions of rest and maximal contraction of the t

The acoustic reflex (AR) was recorded from 12 healthy mixed-breed dogs. Latency and amplitude were measured from ipsilateral and contralateral AR at stimulus frequencies of 1 and 2 kHz and intensities of 70 to 110 dB sound pressure level for ipsilateral AR and 70 to 120 dB hearing level for contralateral AR. Mean latencies for ipsilateral and contralateral AR were between 33.46 and 206.10 ms and between 45.26 and 180.89 ms, respectively, and amplitudes were between 0.14 and 1.79 cm3 and between 0.31 and 1.86 cm3 of air, respectively. Stimulus frequencies and intensities had significant effects

Multiple theories have been discussed about the etiopathogenesis of congenital middle ear cholesteatoma (CMEC) and its specific site of origin. The intraoperative identification of the precise location of the keratinous mass is important to guarantee its complete removal, in order to reduce the risk of recurrence. This study proposes the tensor tympani tendon (TTT) as a possible site of origin of CMEC. All CMECs treated between 2013 and 2019 were reviewed. Only Potsic stage I lesions were included. Preoperative radiologic images were compared to intraoperative findings. Three removed TTT were

Two tiny muscles are attached to the ossicles of the middle ear: the stapedius, whose role as a protector of the inner ear against loud noise has been widely accepted, and the tensor tympani, which remains a mystery since no valid method of detecting its contraction has yet been developed. However, tonic contraction of the tensor tympani has been associated with a number of otological conditions including fullness, tinnitus, slight hearing loss, and Menière-like findings. Our hypothesis is that an easily recognizable sign in the acoustic immittance testing that is part of almost every basic au
