Termitomyces robustus is an edible and highly nutritious wild Basidiomycetes mushroom. It is used in ethnomedicine for treating malnutrition-related diseases, rheumatism, diarrhea, gonorrhea, anemia, and hypertension. Despite the tremendous use of this delicious edible mushroom as a source of nutrients, no comprehensive literature describes its safety and toxicity profiles. Therefore, this study evaluated the toxicity profile of an aqueous T. robustus extract in rats. In the acute toxicity test, male and female rats were orally administered daily a single dose of up to 10 g/kg extract. In the

Termitomyces species are termite-associated fungi that play essential roles in lignocellulose degradation and nutrient cycling and represent a promising source of bioactive metabolites. However, comparative understanding of metabolite diversity and its potential contribution to functional variation among species remains limited. This study investigated three wild edible Termitomyces species (Termitomyces intermedius, Termitomyces microcarpus, and Termitomyces eurrhizus) from Indonesia using an integrative approach combining morphological characterization, ITS rDNA phylogeny, proximate analysis

Biosorption of Cr(+6) by Termitomyces clypeatus has been investigated involving kinetics, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic (FTIR) studies. Kinetics experiments reveal that the uptake of chromium by live cell involves initial rapid surface binding followed by relatively slow intracellular accumulation. Of the different chromate analogues tested, only sulfate ion reduces the uptake of chromium to the extent of approximately 30% indicating chromate ions accumulation into the cytoplasm using sulfate transport system. Metabolic inhibitors, e.g. N,N

A new species, Termitomyces pseudopakistanensis, has been described from West Bengal, an often-overlooked myco-resource, despite its rich historical significance as a valuable food source. Surprisingly, it remains underappreciated in urban markets. Thus, the focus was on examining the taxon's potential health advantages to preserve indigenous culture and promote the use of locally accessible functional food. Mycochemical analysis has shown the presence of bioactive components, including lycopene, beta-carotene, flavonoids, and phenol. In addition, the ethanolic extract demonstrated strong anti

To investigate origin effects on Termitomyces eurhizus, this study evaluated volatile (VOCs) and non-volatile organic compounds (NVOCs) in samples from five regions and examined their correlations with environmental factors. Using headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS), electronic nose, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and ion chromatography, 91 VOCs were identified, among which were esters, aldehydes, ketones, and alcohols. The OPLS-DA model effectively distinguished samples from different regions, identifying este

Fungus-growing termites are engaged in a tripartite mutualism with intestinal microbes and a monocultivar (Termitomyces sp.) in the fungus garden. The termites are often plagued by entomopathogen (Metarhizium anisopliae) and fungus garden is always threatened by competitors (Xylaria spp.). Here, we aim to understand the defensive role of intestinal microbes, the actinomycetes which were isolated from the gut of Macrotermes barneyi. We obtained 44 antifungal isolates, which showed moderate to strong inhibition to Xylaria sp. HPLC analysis indicated that different types of polyenes (tetraene, pe

This study evaluated the biomedical potential of ethanolic extracts from five native Thai mushrooms, revealing distinct biological activities associated with their metabolomic profiles. Termitomyces clypeatus R. Heim demonstrated exceptional biocompatibility, effectively promoting human keratinocyte (HaCaT) proliferation without causing cytotoxicity to the cells. Its primary metabolome, rich in essential amino acids and nucleosides, supports its potential as a candidate for topical wound healing, pending further functional validation. Conversely, Lentinus squarrosulus exhibited strong antibiof

For centuries, mushrooms have been appreciated as sources of food nutrients and pharmacologically important compounds useful in medicine. Yet not all the medicinal properties of mushrooms have been exploited. The above statement is more pertinent to mushrooms that are indigenous to Nigeria. There are inadequate data on the identity and medicinal properties of these wild mushrooms. Information on the ethnomedicinal uses of some mushrooms such as Pleurotus tuber-regium used for headache, stomach pain fever, cold, constipation; Lentinus squarullosus for mumps, heart diseases; Termitomyces microca

Fungus-growing termites harbour diverse microbial communities in their combs and guts. However, culture-based surveys, cross-colony and cross-regional comparisons and assessments of their antimicrobial activities against entomopathogens and fungal weeds remain limited. Through culture-dependent isolation, we surveyed the bacterial and fungal diversity associated with the combs and guts of termites in the genera Macrotermes and Odontotermes, recovering 600 non-Termitomyces fungal isolates representing 79 genera, as well as 59 bacterial isolates. Pathogenicity tests on Macrotermes gilvus reveale

The health risk from thallium (Tl) exposure through the consumption of edible wild mushrooms was investigated. Eight popular wild Asian species were determined for Tl content in raw and stir-fried composite samples, using validated analytical methods and measurement by ICP-MS. Wet weight thallium concentrations, ranged from 2.5 μg·kg-1 in stir-fried Butyriboletus roseoflavus and Scleroderma yunnanense to 20.0 μg·kg-1 in Termitomyces eurrhizus (median and mean values were 2.7 and 7.9 μg·kg-1). Stir-frying resulted in Tl enrichment (+13 to +130%) compared to raw mushrooms because of biomass shri

Colon cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the world. This is commonly observed among older adults, and the occurrence of colon cancer is mainly influenced by unhealthy lifestyle factors. Edible medicinal mushrooms have been demonstrated to have anti-colon cancer effects both individually and in combination with conventional therapies, including synergistically enhancing the efficacy of chemotherapy medications such as 5-fluorouracil in preclinical models. Medicinal mushrooms such as Lentinus edodes, Phellinus linteus, Ganoderma lucidum, Inonotus obliquus, Pleurotus o

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia. The termite fungus comb is an integral component of nests of termites, which are a global pest. Termite fungus comb polysaccharides (TFCPs) have been identified to possess antioxidant, anti-aging, and immune-enhancing properties. However, their physicochemical characteristics and their role in fighting diabetes have not been previously reported. In the current study, TFCPs were isolated and structurally characterized. The yield of TFCPs was determined to be 2.76%, and it was found to be compo
