The shortened spinal cord in tetraodontiform fishes.

In teleosts, the spinal cord generally extends along the entire vertebral canal. The Tetraodontiformes, in which the spinal cord is greatly reduced in length with a distinct long filum terminale and cauda equina, have been regarded as an aberration. The aims of this study are: 1) to elucidate whether the spinal cord in all tetraodontiform fishes shorten with the filum terminale, and 2) to describe the gross anatomical and histological differences in the spinal cord among all families of the Tetraodontiformes. Representative species from all families of the Tetraodontiformes, and for comparison

Morphological studies of the spinal cord in tetraodontiformes fishes.

The spinal cord of two tetraodontiform fishes, the Japanese file fish (Navodon modestus) and the panther puffer (Takifugu pardalis), are unusual among vertebrates in having a markedly abbreviated spinal cord with a long and flattened filum terminale. Only the rostral short part of the cord of both species is cylindrical; the greater part of the cord is markedly flat. The majority of the spinal nerve roots leave the short cylindrical part. The flattened part of the cord contains the central canal, myelinated nerve fibers, and a few motoneurons surrounding the cauda equina, and it is histologica

Pufferfish inflation: Functional morphology of postcranial structures in Diodon holocanthus (Tetraodontiformes).

For the purpose of defending itself against predators, the balloonfish (Diodon holocanthus) can triple its body volume by pumping water into its stomach. Diodon holocanthus exhibits striking structural and functional specializations for inflation. The stomach of the balloonfish is highly extensible and has lost its digestive function, it is repeatedly folded upon itself and is lined with transitional epithelium. The peritoneal cavity of the balloonfish is also large and extensible. During inflation, the stomach expands into an existing peritoneal space surrounding the axial musculature and pre

A new record of triggerfish (Tetraodontiformes: Balistidae) from China with a complete mitogenome.

We report the first confirmed record of the largescale triggerfish, Canthidermis macrolepis (Boulenger, 1888), from the South China Sea, based on a specimen collected near Wenchang, Hainan, China. Sequencing of the complete mitochondrial genome (16,527 bp) revealed typical vertebrate mitogenome organisation, comprising 37 genes and a control region. The genome displayed A + T bias (55.1%) and strong purifying selection across all protein-coding genes. Phylogenetic analyses with both cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and whole mitogenome datasets confirmed the monophyly of Canthidermis and i

Occipito-vertebral fusion in ocean sunfishes (Teleostei: Tetraodontiformes: Molidae) and its phylogenetic implications.

We describe the ontogeny of the occipital skull and anterior vertebrae of the molids Ranzania laevis and Masturus lanceolatus and compare it with that of the ostraciid Lactophrys sp. The first vertebra fuses to the basioccipital in early ontogeny in the two molids and previous authors thus confused that vertebra with the back of the basioccipital, so that all previous counts of their vertebral numbers are incorrect by one vertebra. As evidenced by Lactophrys sp., ostraciids are the only other tetraodontiforms with similar occipito-vertebral fusion. In contrast to the molids, additional anterio

DNA barcoding, identification, and validation of the pufferfish (Order: Tetraodontiformes) in China coastal waters.

The order Tetraodontiformes are one of the most unique groups of teleostean fish, exhibiting highly derived and greatly diversified phenotypes. It is a difficult task for both professionals and nonprofessionals to accurately identify these species only according to morphological characteristics. DNA barcoding can identify species at the molecular level to overcome the limitations of morphological classification. In this study, we collected 616 specimens of pufferfish from the coastal waters of China. According to the morphological characteristics, they were preliminarily identified as 50 speci

Sex determination by ultrasonography prior to artificial breeding of the pufferfish Arothron manilensis (Tetraodontiformes, Tetraodontidae).

Artificial breeding was induced in the pufferfish Arothron manilensis following ultrasonographic sex determination. Hormonal treatment of mature male and female specimens followed the collection (and measurement) of fully developed eggs by cannulation. Fertilized eggs (0.85 ± 0.02 mm diameter) were spherical, demersal and individually adhesive. Hatching occurred 5 days after fertilization, larvae being 2.23 ± 0.15 mm in total length and 2.08 ± 0.14 mm in notochord length. The larvae had all died within 14 days of hatching. To improve artificial breeding techniques for A. manilensis, it is nece

Lateral line system and its innervation in Tetraodontiformes with outgroup comparisons: descriptions and phylogenetic implications.

The lateral line system and its innervation in ten tetraodontiform families and five outgroup taxa were examined. Although some homology issues remained unresolved, tetraodontiforms were characterized by having two types (at least) of superficial neuromasts (defined by the presence or absence of supporting structures) and accessory lateral lines and neuromasts (except Molidae in which "accessory" elements were absent). The preopercular line in Tetraodontiformes was not homologous with that of typical teleosts, because the line was innervated by the opercular ramule that was newly derived from

Enameloid formation in two tetraodontiform fish species with high and low fluoride contents in enameloid.

Forming teeth of parrotfish and pufferfish were viewed by transmission electron microscopy to correlate cytological features of the enameloid organ with the species' fluoride (F) content in mature enameloid. Secretory-stage inner dental epithelial cells (IDE) of parrotfish (high F) and pufferfish (low F) secreted procollagen granules into the enameloid collagen matrix. The odontoblasts of both species, less numerous than IDE cells, also contained procollagen granules at the enameloid matrix formation stage. After the full thickness of enameloid matrix collagen had been deposited, enameloid cry

Functional stomach loss preceding body inflation evolution in Tetraodontiformes: Evidence of gene loss and rapid evolution.

Tetraodontiformes species exhibit several evolutionary innovations, notably the convergent evolution of two traits in some clades: defensive body inflation and the loss of acid-peptic digestion. It has been widely believed that the evolution of body inflation drove the loss of gastric digestion, as ingesting seawater during inflation would hinder acidification and ultimately lead to the loss of gastric digestion. Leveraging accumulating genome resources, we investigated the presence, synteny, gene expression, and rapid evolution of nine genes associated with acid-peptic digestion across seven

Kudoa dianae sp. n. (Myxosporea: Multivalvulida), a new parasite of bullseye puffer, Sphoeroides annulatus (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae).

A new multivalvulid myxosporean species, Kudoa dianae sp. n., is described from bullseye puffer, Sphoeroides annulatus (Jenyns) (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae). Plasmodia develop in extramuscular sites, in the wall of oesophagus and less frequently on mesenteries. Mature spores can reach lumen of the digestive tract directly by disruption of plasmodial wall or via macrophage transport to the oesophageal epithelium. New species is characterised by morphology of spores and by the complete sequence of SSU rRNA gene that differs from all hitherto known sequences of Kudoa species. Spore morphol

A first for Southern Africa: description of a new Heterobothrium (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae) parasitizing the evileye pufferfish Amblyrhynchotes honckenii (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae).

The monogenean genus Heterobothrium (Monogenea: Diclidophoridae) currently consists of 12 accepted species described globally from various pufferfishes (Tetraodontidae). This includes the economically important Heterobothrium okamotoi Ogawa 1991 that causes severe disease in the cultured tiger puffer Takifugu rubripes in Japan. During parasitological surveys targeting near shore marine fishes of South Africa, a new Heterobothrium was discovered on the gills of five evileye pufferfish Amblyrhynchotes honckenii with a prevalence of 100% and mean intensity of 23 (4-72). Specimens were morphologic

Microplastic Interaction in the Parasite Infection of Commercial Marine Puffer Fishes (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae) of the Campeche Coast, Mexico.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics (MPs) serve as carriers of toxic compounds, which affects the resistance and susceptibility of fish to acquiring high parasitic infections and diseases. Moreover, the additive effect of MPs and parasites may cause a greater impact on host immunity and health. Despite the importance of the interaction between MPs and parasitic infections in aquatic organisms, these studies are scarce. METHOD: We collected a total of 69 L. laevigatus and 21 S. spengleri from Seybaplaya, Campeche, México, and 20 µl of blood was obtained from each fish for their blood differential. The p

Leis' conundrum: homology of the clavus of the ocean sunfishes. 2. Ontogeny of the median fins and axial skeleton of Ranzania laevis (Teleostei, Tetraodontiformes, Molidae).

One of the most conspicuous characters of the ocean sunfishes, family Molidae, is the punctuation of the body by a deep, abbreviated, caudal fin-like structure extending vertically between the posterior ends of the dorsal and anal fins, termed the clavus by Fraser Brunner. Homology of the clavus has been a matter of debate since the first studies on molid anatomy in the early 1800s. Two hypotheses have been proposed: 1) It is a highly modified caudal fin; 2) It is formed by highly modified elements of the dorsal and anal fins. To resolve this homology issue, we studied the ontogeny of the moli

A new species of Dermadena (Digenea: Lepocreadiidae) from the stone triggerfish Pseudobalistes naufragium (Tetraodontiformes: Balistidae) in the South American Pacific Ocean.

The present paper describes a new species of Dermadena (Digenea) parasitizing Pseudobalistes naufragium in Puerto Pizarro, northern Peru, using light and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). Additionally, molecular analysis was also performed to determine the phylogenetic affinities of Dermadena within the Lepocreadiidae. The new species is differentiated from Dermadena spatiosa, Dermadena stirlingi and Dermadena lactophrysi by presenting a curved and well-developed external seminal vesicle. Also, SEM revealed numerous dome-shaped tegument protuberances forming glandular papillae with transve
