Schistosomiasis, a chronic neglected tropical disease caused by the Schistosoma spp. parasite, is associated with disabling patient symptoms. The new focus of the WHO roadmap on 'transmission control, wherever possible' offers drug development opportunities for intermediate-host control to prevent human-to-snail-to-human parasite transmission. Reports on the analysis of the impact of 'chemical-based mollusciciding' have concluded that constant application of molluscicides may contribute significantly towards the elimination of schistosomiasis in endemic areas. In South-Western Nigeria, Tetrapl

Experiments were conducted on different stages of Schistosoma mansoni and S. bovis using various concentrations of aridanin and Aridan. Aridanin and Aridan were active against Schistosoma mansoni and S. bovis miracidia. A low concentration of aridanin (0.25 micrograms/ml) reduced the production of cercariae by snails already shedding cercariae. Aridanin and Aridan also produced profound reduction in the worm recovery of mice infected with pretreated cercariae of S. mansoni and S. bovis. Higher concentrations of the molluscicides were biocidal to the cercariae of these schistosomes. These resul

Despite the global preference for green extraction methods in the recovery of plant bioactives, Tetrapleura tetraptera fruit polyphenols (TTP) are yet to receive considerable attention. For the first time, pressurized hot water extraction (PHWE) of TTP was optimized for total phenol content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (AA) using the Box Behnken design of response surface methodology. Predictor variables were time, temperature, and liquid-to-solid ratio. An optimum solution with a desirability of 0.805 was selected and parameters were 43 min, 220°C, and 60 ml g-1 liquid-to-solid ratio, yield

A schistosomiasis research project, carried out in Southwest Nigeria, yielded data by which it was possible to relate snail recovery from potential transmission sites to the presence or absence of Tetrapleura tetraptera. A significant negative correlation with snail numbers was found for distance of T. tetraptera from transmission sites and fruiting of the trees when these variables were tested individually. There were no significant differences between individual variables such as pH, Ca2+ concentrations and temperatures for these snail habitats but these variables produced significant positi

Stroke is the most significant cause of disability worldwide. Despite mounting data supporting memory deficit after stroke, dysfunction and treatment effect mechanisms remain unknown. Phenolics can be found in a variety of fruits and vegetables. There is, however, a scarcity of research on the therapeutic potential of the phenolics fraction of Tetrapleura tetraptera (PTT) fruit against ischemic stroke-induced abnormalities in hippocampal tissue. The rats were divided into five groups: Group I, vehicle; group II, ischemia/reperfusion (I/R)+vehicle; group III, I/R+50 mg/kg minocycline (MNC); gro

Scopoletin has been isolated and identified in gari, a cassava food consumed in Nigeria (West Africa). Its levels in gari and cassava flour is not altered by post processing treatments such as sundrying, refrigeration and storage. Scopoletin has also been identified as an active principle in the traditional herbal infusion of the fruit of Tetrapleura tetraptera TAUB used in the ethnopharmacology of West Africa. It is a potent hypotensive and non-specific spasmolytic agent. These pharmacological effects of Scopoletin are probably the underlying factors in the slowly developing tropical neuropat

Fishing with the aid of poisonous plants was formerly very common in Africa. Today this easy and simple method of fishing is forbidden but still practised in remote areas. The poisonous ingredients are pounded and thrown into a pool or dammed sections of a small river. After a time which varies according to conditions the fish begin to rise to the surface of the water and can readily be taken by hand. In general, the fish can be eaten without problems. 325 fish-poisoning plants, spread among 71 plant families with 183 genera, are presented. The closely related groups of Caesalpiniaceae, Mimosa

Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a leading cause of liver disease globally, with complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) representing a significant contributor due to its widespread use and limited regulation. CAM encompasses diverse practices and products, with regional and ethnic diversity, many of which are used to treat liver disease. Even though a few natural remedies have been utilized for centuries, most lack scientific evidence for their safety and efficacy. This report describes a 42-year-old male who self-treated his fatty liver with CAM, culminating in severe concomitant hep
