Integrating Electronics to Textiles by Ultrasonic Welding for Cable-Driven Applications for Smart Textiles.

The connection between flexible textiles and stiff electronic components has always been structurally weak and a limiting factor in the establishment of smart textiles in our everyday life. This paper focuses on the formation of reliable connections between conductive textiles and conventional litz wires using ultrasonic welding. The paper offers a promising approach to solving this problem. The electrical and mechanical performance of the samples were investigated after 15 and 30 wash-and-dry cycles in a laundry machine. Here the contact resistances and their peeling strength were measured. F

E-Textiles for Healthy Ageing.

The ageing population has grown quickly in the last half century with increased longevity and declining birth rate. This presents challenges to health services and the wider society. This review paper considers different aspects (e.g., physical, mental, and social well-being) of healthy ageing and how health devices can help people to monitor health conditions, treat diseases and promote social interactions. Existing technologies for addressing non-physical (e.g., Alzheimer's, loneliness) and physical (e.g., stroke, bedsores, and fall) related challenges are presented together with the drivers

[Reactions to fragrances and textiles].

Allergic reactions to fragrances are caused by perfumes and perfume-containing items of our environment. The most important allergen is cinnamic aldehyde. By means of the mixed perfume test recommended by the International Contact Dermatitis Research Group (ICDRG), however, we are not able to detect more than half of the patients suffering from perfume allergy. Thus we suggest to make use of two new test series comprising most of the relevant fragrance components. Allergic reactions to textiles are mostly due to textile dyes. Special regard must be given to the disperse dyes of the azo group i

Medical textiles in orthopedics: An overview.

The use of textile in the medical field is not new; this has given rise to a new branch known as medical textiles. These are being used to repair or replace various other musculoskeletal tissues. The most common uses of biomaterials are to create aseptic conditions for protection, general health care, and hygiene including bedding and clothing, surgical gowns, face masks, head and shoe covers, sterilization wraps, suture anchors, fiber cast and braces/orthotics. These are also used as materials for preparation of wipes, swabs, wound dressings, bandages, gauzes, plasters, pressure garments, ort

Metal Content in Textile and (Nano)Textile Products.

Metals, metallic compounds, and, recently, metallic nanoparticles appear in textiles due to impurities from raw materials, contamination during the manufacturing process, and/or their deliberate addition. However, the presence of lead, cadmium, chromium (VI), arsenic, mercury, and dioctyltin in textile products is regulated in Europe (Regulation 1907/2006). Metal determination in fabrics was performed by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) after microwave-assisted acid digestion. The ICP-MS procedure has been successfully validated; relative standard deviations were up to 3%

Active textiles move in confined areas.

Integrating shape-morphing materials into higher hierarchical level architectures can enable programmable, complex behaviors, but it remains unclear how thread architecture can turn local contraction into coordinated motion without changing the textiles' overall shape. Here, we demonstrate that embedding contracting threads into the versatile topologies of bobbin lace creates reconfigurable textiles that operate within fixed boundaries. Varying the mix of passive and active threads, their routing, and node placement makes it possible to transmit, cancel, or redirect motion. When lace architect

[Combustion gas toxicity of textiles (author's transl)].

Textiles are used so widely as interior materials of many buildings, houses, and transportation facilities, that the combustion gas has a chance of intoxication of a fire accident. Therefore this investigation was undertaken to clarify the toxicity of the gas and to obtain an index for safety standards in such cases. The combustion gases of cotton, polypropylene, acrylic, flame retardant (F.R.) cotton and F.R. acrylic fabrics were analyzed by a gas chromatograph and a GC-Mass spectorograph, and also tested with experimental animals to determine the lethal factors including blood gas analyzing

Determination of aniline and quinoline compounds in textiles.

A simple method for simultaneous determination of twenty-one analytes, belonging to two classes of compounds, aromatic amines and quinolines, is presented. Several of the analytes considered in this study frequently occur in textiles goods on the open market and have been related to allergic contact dermatitis and/or are proven or suspected carcinogens. The method includes an efficient clean-up step using graphitized carbon black (GCB) that simplifies and improves the robustness of the subsequent GC-MS analysis. Briefly, after solvent extraction of the textile sample, the extract is passed thr

A programmable fungal platform for engineered living textiles.

A central challenge in engineered living materials (ELMs) is the seamless integration of macroscopic structural assembly with sustained cellular viability and programmable function. Here, we report a fungal-based living material that addresses this challenge by preserving the metabolic activity of Cordyceps militaris mycelia within macroscale, cohesive films fabricated via a low-energy process. These living textiles retain the capacity for environmental response, demonstrated by nutrient-induced aerial hyphal growth that enables surface renewal. The native mycelial architecture further allows

Virucidal and Bactericidal Properties of Biocompatible Copper Textiles.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlights the global threat posed by emerging viruses, emphasizing the critical need for effective strategies to combat pathogen transmission. Moreover, alongside emerging viruses, the increasing threat of antimicrobial resistance further reinforces the need to develop novel methods for infection control. Anti-pathogenic coatings on textiles offer a promising solution; in this study, three electroless copper-plated fabrics are evaluated for their antipathogenic properties following International Standards Organisation (ISO) standards. Prior to electroless plating, materi

Implant-to-implant wireless networking with metamaterial textiles.

Implanted bioelectronic devices can form distributed networks capable of sensing health conditions and delivering therapy throughout the body. Current clinically-used approaches for wireless communication, however, do not support direct networking between implants because of signal losses from absorption and reflection by the body. As a result, existing examples of such networks rely on an external relay device that needs to be periodically recharged and constitutes a single point of failure. Here, we demonstrate direct implant-to-implant wireless networking at the scale of the human body usin

Converting waste textiles into highly effective sorbent materials.

Activated carbon fibres with a tubular structure and exfoliated surface were produced utilizing cotton textile waste as the precursor. The synthesized carbon fibres were freeze dried resulting in a tubular structure and large pore size distribution. The absorption properties against various oils and organic solvents were accessed, these fibres showed some of the highest absorption capabilities reported for cellulose based carbons, in particular for olive oil, gasoline and chloroform.

The Role of Textiles in Dermatitis: An Update.

Dermatitis has important implications for individuals who are affected. It can significantly impair function and quality of life. Dermatitis is multi-factorial and often includes elements of atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, and irritant contact dermatitis in a co-existent manner. Textiles are in contact with the human skin for extended periods of time and as a result, they are an important part of the cutaneous environment. Thus, it is not surprising that textiles play a major role in both the etiology and the treatment of various types of dermatitis. This review discusses the r

Are allergenic disperse dyes used for dyeing textiles?

BACKGROUND: There are no data showing that disperse dyes, used to patch test patients, are currently being used for dyeing synthetic garments. It is unknown whether disperse dyes, which are currently routinely patch tested, are in fact present in synthetic textiles on the market. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether eight disperse dyes, hitherto most widely cited as allergenic, are still used in textiles that are sold in various countries. METHODS: Textiles from 13 countries in Europe, Asia and the United States were analysed. The procedure used for dye identification was thin-layer chromatograp

Determination of flame-retardant hexabromocyclododecane diastereomers in textiles.

To establish a concise and rapid procedure to analyze hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) diastereomers in flame-retarded textiles, three different methods of extraction-Soxhlet, ultrasonic, and soaking extractions with toluene and dichloromethane (DCM)-were compared. During Soxhlet extraction using toluene, the percent contribution of alpha-HBCD to total HBCDs increased slightly and that of gamma-HBCD decreased, indicating that gamma-HBCD was isomerized to some extent at the boiling point of toluene (110.6 degrees C). For ultrasonic extraction, the temperature of the water bath can easily increase

Skin physiology and textiles - consideration of basic interactions.

The skin exerts a number of essential protective functions ensuring homeostasis of the whole body. In the present review barrier function of the skin, thermoregulation, antimicrobial defence and the skin-associated immune system are discussed. Barrier function is provided by the dynamic stratum corneum structure composed of lipids and corneocytes. The stratum corneum is a conditio sine qua non for terrestrial life. Impairment of barrier function can be due to injury and inflammatory skin diseases. Textiles, in particular clothing, interact with skin functions in a dynamic pattern. Mechanical p
