Control of autoimmunity by "epitope theft".

We all possess T cells with autoaggressive potential. Knowledge of their regulation is crucial for elucidating pathogenetic pathways and designing effective treatments for autoimmune diseases. A novel mechanism of T-cell silencing--in an autoimmune model--has recently been identified and is termed "epitope theft". The "thieves" are naive CD8+ T cells, which apparently "steal" MHC-class-I-antigen complexes from antigen-presenting cells (APCs). The deprived APCs can no longer activate other potentially pathogenic naive CD8+ T cells that are specific for the same epitope. This phenomenon is a pre

WASp identity theft by a bacterial effector.

EspF(U), a protein secreted by pathogenic enterohaemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), activates N-WASp/WASp to induce actin pedestal formation in host cells. Two recent papers in Nature show that EspF(U) exploits a WASp activation strategy so extreme that it may effectively sequester WASp, blinding it to both autoinhibition and cellular regulation.

Kleptomania or common theft - diagnostic and judicial difficulties.

First descriptions of kleptomania as a mental disorder date back to the nineteenth century. For the first time, kleptomania as an accompanying symptom rather than a formal diagnosis was included in the classification of psychiatric disorders of the American Psychiatric Association DSM-I in 1952. It was included in the International Classification of Diseases ICD-10 and classified under "habit and impulse disorders". Kleptomania is a serious disorder, as numerous thefts are impulsively carried out, carrying the risk of detection and consequently criminal liability. In Poland, we lack epidemiolo

Accusations of genital theft: a case from northern Ghana.

Occurrences of panic attacks associated with belief in genital retraction have been described in the anthropological and psychological literature in terms of culture bound reactive syndromes. Similar phenomena occur widely in West Africa, where they are reported as cases of penis snatching. Explanations for these phenomena range from the biomedical emphasis on pathology to the social psychological emphasis on altered perceptual sets. This paper provides a narrative of an accusation of genital theft in a rural West African settlement. Drawing from ethnographic information, it will be argued tha

An exploration of exaggerated fears of identity theft in hoarding disorder.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with hoarding symptoms often report laborious routines of reviewing and destroying paperwork prior to discarding, citing fears of identity theft if personal information is discarded. While fears of identity theft seem likely to be elevated in hoarding disorder, it is unclear if these fears are elevated beyond what is normative for older adults, and whether such fears may be related to third factors. METHOD: In the current study we sought to explore whether fears of identity theft were higher among 103 individuals high in hoarding symptoms as compared with 59 non-hoar

Delusions of theft in dementia of the Alzheimer type: a preliminary report.

Delusions of theft are commonly found in patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT). This report describes the frequency, onset, and characteristics of delusions of theft in DAT patients. The sample consisted of 54 geropsychiatric inpatients with DAT; delusions of theft were found in 30 (55.6%) patients. Two thirds of these patients had delusions of theft within 1 year after onset of illness. There were no significant differences in age, age of onset, duration of disease, years of education, or the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score between patients with and without delusions o

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Theft Biofilm Require Host Lipids of Cutaneous Wound.

OBJECTIVE: This work addressing complexities in wound infection, seeks to test the reliance of bacterial pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) on host skin lipids to form biofilm with pathological consequences. BACKGROUND: PA biofilm causes wound chronicity. Both CDC as well as NIH recognizes biofilm infection as a threat leading to wound chronicity. Chronic wounds on lower extremities often lead to surgical limb amputation. METHODS: An established preclinical porcine chronic wound biofilm model, infected with PA or Pseudomonas aeruginosa ceramidase mutant (PA ∆Cer ), was used. RESULTS: We o

High-risk electrical burn injuries associated with illicit copper wire theft.

OBJECTIVE: Electrical burn injuries associated with copper wire theft represent a unique and dangerous subset of injuries observed in clinical practice. Economic hardship and the high value of copper wires drive some individuals to engage in the risky act of scavenging wires, often cutting them directly from live electrical poles. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and clinical outcomes of electrical burn injuries resulting from copper wire theft. METHODS: This retrospective analysis reviewed medical records of patients presenting with electrical burns caused by contact with live e

How peer relationships influence adolescents' reasoning about theft-based moral transgressions.

Two studies (Ntotal = 1,153) investigated how adolescents reason about whether to report a transgression committed by a close friend versus distant classmate. In Study 1, sixth-ninth graders (Mage = 12.36 years, SDage = 1.14 years; 55% girls, 44% boys; 2% Asian, 63% Black, 13% Latino, 7% multiracial, 7% White; low-income urban schools) were less willing to report close friends than distant classmates, for both high- and low-severity thefts. In Study 2, seventh-eighth graders (Mage = 12.87 years, SDage = 0.07 years; 48% girls, 45% boys; 2% Asian, 2% Black, 3% Latino, 85% White, 2% multiracial;

The validity and reliability of the "Factors Related to Theft by Patients with Eating Disorders Questionnaire".

PURPOSE: Although kleptomania is frequently observed in patients with eating disorders, research on its causes is scarce, and no scale exists to assess it. This pilot study was done to develop such a scale and to evaluate its validity and reliability. METHODS: Forty-six female patients with anorexia nervosa incarcerated at the Kitakyushu Medical Prison completed our newly developed questionnaire that is based on the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for kleptomania. All participants had developed an eating disorder prior to their initial incarceration in a correctional facility, had no history of sti

Mechanical asphyxia by accidental compression of the neck during a theft: A case report.

Death by accidental mechanical asphyxia in adults is infrequent and usually results from chocking/aspiration, entrapment, ligature strangulation by clothes catching in machinery (especially as occupational deaths) and, more frequently, sexual asphyxia. Except for autoerotic deaths, accidental hanging almost never occurs in adults, and compression of the neck by solid unmovable structures is also rarely reported. The authors report an unusual case of death by mechanical asphyxia due to accidental compression of the neck in combination with suspension of the body, observed in a thief who was fou

Identity Theft, Deep Brain Stimulation, and the Primacy of Post-trial Obligations.

Patient narratives from two investigational deep brain stimulation trials for traumatic brain injury and obsessive-compulsive disorder reveal that injury and illness rob individuals of personal identity and that neuromodulation can restore it. The early success of these interventions makes a compelling case for continued post-trial access to these technologies. Given the centrality of personal identity to respect for persons, a failure to provide continued access can be understood to represent a metaphorical identity theft. Such a loss recapitulates the pain of an individual's initial injury o

Developmental trajectories of male physical violence and theft: relations to neurocognitive performance.

CONTEXT: Neurocognitive mechanisms have long been hypothesized to influence developmental trajectories of antisocial behavior. However, studies examining this association tend to aggregate a variety of problem behaviors that may be differently affected by neurocognitive deficits. OBJECTIVE: To describe the developmental trajectories of physical violence and theft from adolescence to adulthood, their associations, and the neurocognitive characteristics of individuals following different patterns of trajectory association. DESIGN: Accelerated cohort-sequential, longitudinal design. SETTING: R

Theft of Host Transferrin Receptor-1 by Toxoplasma gondii is required for infection.

Nutrient acquisition by apicomplexan parasites is essential to drive their intracellular replication, yet the mechanisms that underpin essential nutrient acquisition are not defined. Using the apicomplexan model Toxoplasma gondii , we show that host cell proteins including the transferrin receptor 1, transferrin, ferritin heavy and light chains, and clathrin light chain are robustly taken up by tachyzoites. Tachyzoite acquisition of host cell protein was not related to host cell type or parasite virulence phenotypes. Bradyzoites possessed little capacity to acquire host cell proteins consisten

Residents' Location-Based Fear of Theft and Their Impact Factors in Guangzhou, China.

While the fear of theft is common and is known to lead to lower satisfaction with life and subjective well-being, current literature regards the fear of theft as a stable psychological state and ignores discrepancies based on location and their influencing factors. To fill these gaps, we selected 74 typical communities and collected 1568 questionnaires throughout Guangzhou. The results show that: (1) the respondents demonstrated significant location-based differences in their fear of theft. Locations including a coach station, a railway station, a bus station, a subway station and a wholesale

Linking Exploitative Leadership to Time Theft: A Psychological Model of Hatred and Moral Disengagement.

This study examines the relationship between exploitative leadership (EL) and employee time theft (TT), with a particular focus on the mediating roles of hatred (HA) and moral disengagement (MD), and the moderating role of professional commitment (PC). Using survey data from 238 employees and managers in Pakistan's service sector, partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was employed to test the hypothesized relationships. The results indicate that EL is positively associated with TT (β = 0.205, p < .01), both directly and indirectly through HA (indirect effect: β = 0.096,
