One thousand three hundred and twenty-two eyes obtained from slaughtered cattle throughout Alberta were examined for eyeworms. Each eye was partitioned into 9 sites and all eyeworms were recorded by site. Seven hundred eyeworms were recovered from 121 infected eyes. The distribution of Thelazia skrjabini across the 9 sites differed significantly (P < 0.001) from that of Thelazia gulosa. The 2 major lacrimal ducts associated with the Harderian gland contained 58% (354/613) of the T. skrjabini present, whereas the large ventral lateral duct of the orbital gland contained 58% (50/87) of the T. gu

Tor barbs, Tor tor (Hamilton), a cyprinid fish collected from Barak Valley, Assam, India were examined for helminth parasites. A nematode species of the genus Rhabdochona Railliet, 1916 (Rhabdochonidae) was found in the intestine of the fish specimens. The morphology of these nematodes was characterised by the presence of a funnel shaped prostom, head with four submedian sublabia, four cephalic papillae, long and slender posterior glandular oesophagus in both sexes, presence of 14 caudal papillae and two unequal spicules with pointed proximal tips in male specimens, and prominent post-equatori

Chronic weight loss in marmosets is often associated with wasting marmoset syndrome (WMS), an important disease that occurs in callitrichid colonies around the world. Even though its etiology is very difficult to determine, particular variables, such as weight loss, diarrhea and alopecia, associated or not with infestation in the pancreatic ducts with Trichospirura leptossoma (Nematoda: Thelazioidea), seem to be linked with the syndrome. This study investigated the histopathology of the lungs, duodenum, liver, gallbladder, extrahepatic bile ducts and pancreatic ducts of six common marmosets (C

Thelazia skrjabini (Spirurida, Thelaziidae) is a parasite of cattle that causes ocular infections. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the surface ultrastructure of adult worms of this nematode. At the anterior end of both sexes, the buccal opening was orbicular. Around the mouth, two circles of cephalic papillae were seen: the inner circle with six papillae and the outer circle with four submedian papillae. At both lateral sides of the head, two amphids were observed. A pair of lateral cervical papillae was present. In the female, the vulva was located at the anterior part of the b

Metathelazia capsulata is a lungworm that inhabit in the bronchi and bronchioles from mammal carnivore species, which life cycle is unknown. M. capsulata-like spirurid nematodes were isolated at necropsy from the respiratory tract of red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) from the Region of Murcia (SE Spain). The main objective of this study was to describe in detail the morphometric features of these nematodes, as well as to report some molecular markers. The principal morphometric difference compared to previous M. capsulata descriptions was the shorter total length for both males and females (6.6 mm and

This clinical study assessed the efficacy of a topical combination of esafoxolaner, eprinomectin and praziquantel (NexGard® Combo) in treating cats naturally infected with the eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda (Nematoda, Thelaziidae). On Study Day (SD) 0, sixteen client-owned cats with eyeworm infection were allocated to an untreated control group (G1, 8 cats) or to a NexGard® Combo treated group (G2, 8 cats) and subjected to ocular examination. Cats in G2 received the treatment as per label recommendations. On SD 7 and 14 (±1), cats were examined for the presence of eyeworms and clinical signs. On

BACKGROUND: Equine thelaziosis is a neglected vector-borne parasitic disease in modern veterinary medicine, lacking recent reports. It is transmitted by Musca autumnalis, and potentially other Muscidae species, by ingesting the lachrymal secretions of its equine host. The distribution of both Thelazia lacrymalis and its intermediate hosts remains largely unknown throughout Europe, with most studies dating back 20 years. The aim of this study was to assess the presence, prevalence and distribution of T. lacrymalis in horses from Romania.
METHODS: The eyes of 273 horses, slaughtered at two abat

Very few cases of Human Thelaziasis are reported worldwide. This is the first case of its kind from Bangladesh. A 58 years old man was admitted to Ophthalmology department of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, Mymensingh, with itching, redness, foreign body sensation, lacrimation & filamentary discharge from right eye (R/E). He had visual acuity <6/60, conjunctival congestion & advanced bi-headed pterygium of R/E. After exposure of R/E ball with universal eye's speculum, a thin white nematode was found into the right lower conjunctival fornix. It was taken out by a plain forceps, placed into

As a newly-minted veterinarian and aspirant pathologist, my first publication reported on an osteosarcoma at the thoracic inlet of a dog (Schröder 1976). The case was noteworthy because it was unusual for an osteosarcoma to originate on the axial skeleton, rather than on one of the long bones. Several years later, now wearing a parasitologist's hat, I have asked myself on numerous occasions if I might have missed an aetiological diagnosis of spirocercosis because I was too fixated on the neoplasm and its location. My only aide memoire is the paper from 1976, according to which I looked for and

BACKGROUND: The oriental eyeworm Thelazia callipaeda (Spirurida: Thelaziidae) is an emerging parasitic ocular nematode of carnivores and humans. In domestic animals and humans, the infection causes varying degrees of inflammation and lacrimation, and wild carnivores represent an important reservoir. In this study we examined the infection status and molecular characterization of T. callipaeda in two urban carnivores, raccoons Procyon lotor and wild Japanese raccoon dogs Nyctereutes viverrinus, in the Kanto region of Japan.
METHODS: From January 2020 to December 2021, 193 carcasses including 1

Various dung beetle species of the family Scarabaeidae have been reported as intermediate hosts of Spirocerca lupi from different geographical locations, but there has been no data from south-east Asian countries. In the present study in Vietnam, by using morphological and molecular approaches, we identified the third-stage larvae of S. lupi for the first time in two dung beetle species, Catharsius molossus and Copris szechouanicus, adding them as new intermediate hosts of this nematode. In addition, both beetle species were infected with larvae of another spirurid nematode of Physocephalus sp

Spirocerca lupi infection in dogs (Canis domesticus) is associated with esophageal lesions that may evolve to a neoplastic stage in the form of esophageal sarcoma. In the red fox (Vulpes vulpes) infected with the closely related Spirocerca vulpis, similar lesions may occur in the stomach, but neoplastic forms have not been reported. We characterize Spirocerca vulpis-induced lesions in the fox, using pathology and immunohistochemical (IHC) techniques. Seventy-one out of 163 Spirocerca vulpis-positive red foxes were selected and subjected to histopathological study. Lesions were classified as pa

BACKGROUND: Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic vector-borne nematode primarily affecting carnivores, lagomorphs, and humans. Over the past decades, the parasite has expanded across Europe. This report presents the first molecularly confirmed case of canine thelaziosis in Estonia. The findings highlight the urgent need for increased awareness of T. callipaeda among veterinarians, human medical professionals, and pet owners, as this parasite poses an important public health concern.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 6-year-old spayed female Swiss White Shepherd, with a recent travel history to several Europe

We report 2 cases of Thelazia rhodesii infection in the African buffaloes, Syncerus caffer, in Zambia. African buffalo calves were captured from the livestock and wildlife interface area of the Kafue basin in the dry season of August 2005 for the purpose to translocate to game ranches. At capture, calves (n=48) were examined for the presence of eye infections by gently manipulating the orbital membranes to check for eye-worms in the conjunctival sacs and corneal surfaces. Two (4.3%) were infected and the mean infection burden per infected eye was 5.3 worms (n=3). The mean length of the worms w

Spirocerca lupi (Rudolphi 1809) is a cosmopolitan nematode of dogs and wild carnivores. In the past it has been reported in Italy, mainly in southern regions and in Sicily, where the parasite was observed in foxes in 2005. The parasite typically produces nodular masses in the oesophagus and thoracic aorta. During the 2003-2004 hunting season, the authors investigated a total of 55 foxes (Vulpes vulpes) hunted or killed by car accidents in the provinces of Palermo and Agrigento. All the foxes were subjected to necropsy and 6 (9.16%) had S. lupi nodules located exclusively in the gastric wall. T
