Epilepsy is characterized by recurrent, chronic, and unprovoked seizures. Epilepsy has a significant negative impact on a patient's quality of life even if seizures are well controlled. In addition to the distress caused by seizures, patients with epilepsy (PwE) may suffer from cognitive impairment with serious social consequences such as poor interpersonal relationships, loss of employment, and reduced social networks. Pathological changes and functional connectivity abnormalities observed in PwE can disrupt the neural network responsible for the theory of mind. Theory of mind is the ability

INTRODUCTION: Theory of mind deficit can be used to explain social and communication impairments that define the autism spectrum disorder. Theory of mind is the ability to attribute mental states to self and others in order to understand and predict behavior. It involves the distinction between the real world and mental representations of the world. Several studies established that high functioning autistic individuals and individuals with Asperger syndrome (ASP) tend to be as proficient as controls in understanding first order false belief tasks. In contrast, they still lag behind their typic

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate theory of mind (ToM) in individuals with bulimia nervosa (BN), an area neglected by empirical research despite social functioning difficulties in this disorder and evidence of ToM deficits in people with anorexia nervosa (AN).
METHOD: ToM was assessed in 48 BN and 34 Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified BN-type (EDNOS-BN) outpatients and 57 healthy controls (HCs) using the Reading the Mind in the Eyes and the Reading the Mind in the Films (RMF), an ecologically valid task novel to BN research.
RESULTS: Overall performance in BN and EDNOS-BN group

Two studies are reported in which the ability of people with Asperger's syndrome to understand problems of the type "Peter thinks that Jane thinks that ..." tested. The results showed that in contrast to younger or more handicapped autistic individuals, Asperger subjects were able to solve problems of the type just outlined, i.e. that they possessed a second-order theory of mind. When asked to explain their solutions however, they typically did not use mental state terms but did not differ in this respect either from non-handicapped or socially impaired, chronic schizophrenic controls. Reasoning about others' thoughts or beliefs is central to human social behavior. This ability, known as theory of mind (ToM), has been primarily attributed to cortical regions of the default network (DN). However, whether and how subcortical structures, particularly the thalamus, contribute to this high-level computation remains unknown. Here, we investigated human thalamocortical dynamics during a naturalistic ToM movie watching condition, taking a rare dual-modality approach by combining high-field 7T fMRI and intracranial stereoelectroencephalography (sEEG). Across both modalities, ToM even

Juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME) is a common idiopathic generalized epilepsy often accompanied by executive dysfunction, affective symptoms, unfavorable behavior, and social outcomes, yet its impact on theory of mind (ToM) remains underexplored. We conducted an unmatched case-control study assessing 34 JME patients and 48 healthy controls, adjusted for age, sex, education, intelligence quotient, anxiety, and depression. Participants completed a brief version of the Faux Pas Recognition Test (FPRT) and the Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test, alongside measures of executive function, prospective

This research compared the written compositions of 16 adults with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders and 16 neurotypical control participants, and examined the influence of theory of mind on their writing. Participants ranging in age from 17 years to 42 years, matched on Vocabulary subtest scores from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (1997), completed the Social Attribution Task and wrote an expository and a narrative text. Texts were assessed on 18 variables representing quality, mechanics, and length. It was found that adults with HFASD wrote lower quality narrative and exposito

Social cognitive psychologists (Frith, 1992; Hardy-Baylé et al., 2003) sought to explain the social problems and clarify the clinical picture of schizophrenia by proposing a model that relates many of the symptoms to a problem of metarepresentation, i.e., theory of mind (ToM). Given the differences in clinical samples and results between studies, and considering the wide range of what is considered to constitute ToM, one must ask if there a core function, or is ToM multifaceted with dissociable facets? If, there are dissociable dimensions or facets, which are affected in patients with paranoid

OBJECTIVE: Bipolar disorder is associated to persistent functional impairments. Although many researches have shown that bipolar individuals might have cognitive deficits, a small number of studies evaluated the role of problems of social cognitive Theory of Mind processing (regarding the capacity to infer mental states) in the emergence of bipolar disorder's symptoms and its possible social poor outcomes. The objective of the present manuscript is to review systematically and critically the literature on Theory of Mind processing in bipolar disorder.
METHOD: A search in the electronic databa

Difficulties in 'theory of mind' (the ability to attribute mental states to oneself or others, and to make predictions about another's behaviour based on these attributions) have been observed in several psychiatric conditions. We investigate the genetic architecture of theory of mind in 4,577 13-year-olds who completed the Emotional Triangles Task (Triangles Task), a first-order test of theory of mind. We observe a small but significant female-advantage on the Triangles Task (Cohen's d = 0.19, P < 0.01), in keeping with previous work using other tests of theory of mind. Genome-wide associatio

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common psychiatric disorder characterized by a persistent, excessive fear and avoidance of social and performance situations. Research on cognitive biases indicates individuals with SAD may lack an accurate view of how they are perceived by others, especially in social situations when they allocate important attentional resources to monitoring their own actions as well as external threat. In the present study, we explored whether socially anxious individuals also have impairments in theory of mind (ToM), or the ability to comprehend others' mental states, inc

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant degenerative brain disorder that is characterized by motor, cognitive, and affective symptoms. There is, to some, degree, phenomenological overlap with schizophrenia. Schizophrenia patients are frequently impaired in "theory of mind" (ToM), that is, the ability to reflect on the mental states of self and others, with mixed evidence for a ToM deficit in HD.
METHODS: We examined ToM and neurocognitive functioning in 25 patients diagnosed with HD. For comparison, 25 patients with schizophrenia and 25 healthy controls, matched for age

BACKGROUND: Poor theory of mind (ToM) performance has been found in patients with mood disorders, but it has not been examined in the subgroup of chronic depression where ToM deficits may be even more persistent than in acute depressive episodes. The aim of this study was to compare the ToM performance of chronically depressed patients with a healthy control group and to clarify the relation of ToM to other cognitive functions.
METHODS: ToM performance was assessed in 30 chronically depressed patients and 30 matched healthy controls by two cartoon picture story tests. In addition, logical mem

BACKGROUND: Bipolar affective disorder patients often show cognitive deficits that are similar to those found in schizophrenia patients. Theory of mind (the ability to understand others' mental states) is compromised in currently ill schizophrenia patients. This study aimed to establish whether similar deficits are found in bipolar patients.
METHODS: We measured theory of mind ability in 20 bipolar-manic patients, 15 bipolar-depressed patients, 13 bipolar patients in remission and 15 normal controls. The task, which controlled for memory and comprehension, had previously been used in a study

OBJECTIVE: Theory of mind (ToM), the ability to understand other minds-that is, their beliefs, intentions (cognitive ToM), or emotions (affective ToM)-and its neuropsychological mechanisms in migraine have been poorly investigated. The aim of the study was to explore the deficit of cognitive and affective ToM and its possible associations with cognitive functioning in patients with chronic migraine (CM).
METHOD: Forty participants with CM and 40 age-, education-, and sex-matched healthy controls (HC) underwent clinical assessment, cognitive (the ToM Pictures Sequencing Task and the Advanced T

RATIONALE: Anabolic androgenic steroids are used to improve physical performance or increase lean muscle mass. About one-third of users develop a dependency syndrome, which is characterized by elevated rates of psychopathology, cognitive impairments, and aggressive and antisocial behaviors. The mechanisms behind these intra- and interpersonal problems are not known.
OBJECTIVE: To examine theory of mind (ToM), i.e., the ability to infer the mental state of others, in users of anabolic androgenic steroids. Reduced ToM may be one factor underlying the interpersonal problems that have been report

To understand the evolution of a Theory of Mind, we need to understand the selective factors that might have jumpstarted its initial evolution. We argue that a subconscious, reflexive appreciation of others' intentions, emotions, and perspectives is at the roots of even the most complex forms of Theory of Mind and that these abilities may have evolved because natural selection has favored individuals that are motivated to empathize with others and attend to their social interactions. These skills are adaptive because they are essential to forming strong, enduring social bonds, which in turn en

While there is considerable evidence that children's early ability to understand others' mental states, called "theory of mind," is shaped by family experiences, it remains unclear whether children's social interactions at school influence theory of mind (ToM) beyond early childhood. We tested whether the mean level ("quantity") and/or the diversity ("variety") of peers' ToM influenced children's own ToM. We also examined whether peer effects on ToM were independent of possible confounding variables (e.g., verbal ability, social isolation) and comparable across children with different initial

INTRODUCTION: Social cognition (SC) is often impaired by dementia, contributing to difficulties with relationships and social isolation. Additionally, people with dementia frequently have impaired awareness of their impairments, which may worsen distress for them, their family, and friends. We investigated SC in people with Alzheimer's disease (PwAD), awareness of SC, and whether PwAD overestimate SC abilities compared to healthy controls (HC).
METHODS: Participants completed the Interpersonal Reactivity Index perspective-taking subscale (IRI-PT), a self-report measure of SC, and The Awarenes

PURPOSE: This study examined the impact of bilingualism on affective theory of mind (ToM) and social prioritization (SP) among autistic adults compared to neurotypical comparison participants.
METHOD: Fifty-two (25 autistic, 27 neurotypical) adult participants (ages 21-35 years) with varying second language (L2) experience, ranging from monolingual to bilingual, completed an affective ToM task. A subset of this sample also completed a dynamic eye-tracking task designed to capture differences in time spent looking at social aspects of a scene (SP). Four language groups were compared on task pe
