Psychology of addictive behaviors : journal of the Society of Psychologists in Addictive Behaviors2010eng
Gambling is an important public health concern. To better understand gambling behavior, we conducted a classroom-based survey that assessed the role of the theory of planned behavior (TPB; i.e., intentions, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, and attitudes) in past-year gambling and gambling frequency among college students. Results from this research support the utility of the TPB to explain gambling behavior in this population. Specifically, in TPB models to predict gambling behavior, friend and family subjective norms and perceived behavioral control predicted past-year gambling

OBJECTIVE: Explore the appropriateness of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model for analyzing risky sexual behavior in men who have sex with other men (MSM), with the object of proposing an alternative model that improves understanding.
METHODS: Qualitative analysis of semi-structured individual and nominal group interviews conducted with 45 MSM who engaged in risky sexual behavior (insertive or receptive anal penetration without use of a condom) during the past 12 months. In order to manage the data, a discourse analysis using the constant comparative method was performed in two phases:

INTRODUCTION: Off-label prescribing, use of medications outside approved indications, dosages, administration routes, or age groups is common in pediatric clinical practice, largely because of the lack of high-quality clinical trials in children. Although such prescriptions can meet urgent therapeutic needs, particularly in complex or rare pediatric conditions, they also raise significant concerns regarding safety, effectiveness, and medicolegal liability. Limited research has examined the behavioral factors that influence pediatricians' decisions to prescribe off-label drugs.

OBJECTIVES: This investigation tests the theory of planned behavior (TPB) as a predictor of HIV testing intention among Nigerian university undergraduate students.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 392 students was conducted using a self-administered structured questionnaire that measured socio-demographics, perceived risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, and TPB constructs. Analysis was based on 273 students who had never been tested for HIV. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis assessed the applicability of the TPB in predicting HIV testing intention and additional pr

Drunkorexia refers to high-risk behaviors that involve the intersection of disordered eating behaviors and risky alcohol consumption. This study utilized the extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to identify potential psychosocial factors that contribute to drunkorexia among students (484 undergraduate students) from a midwestern Mid-sized university. This cross-sectional study used online surveys designed to measure various drunkorexia-related behaviors including alcohol consumption, calorie restriction, excessive exercise, and purging utilizing antecedents of the TPB. About one-fourth of

The present study, using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), investigated psychological correlates of intention to gamble and problem gambling among Chinese college students. Nine hundred and thirty two Chinese college students (aged from 18 to 25 years) in Hong Kong and Macao were surveyed. The findings generally support the efficacy of the TPB in explaining gambling intention and problems among Chinese college students. Specifically, the results of the path analysis indicate gambling intention and perceived control over gambling as the most proximal predictors of problem gambling, whereas

This paper focuses on a special segment of motorcyclists in Taiwan--riders of heavy motorcycles--and investigates their speeding behavior and its affecting factors. It extends the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to explore motorcyclist speeding behavior by including the variables of psychological flow theory. The levels of sensation-seeking and riding experience are also used as grouping variables to investigate group differences from the influences of their affecting factors on speeding behavior. The results reveal that the psychological flow variables have greater predictive power in explai

BACKGROUND: Pro-environmental behavior is essential for addressing global ecological challenges, yet many individuals fail to translate their environmental intentions into action. To explore psychological mechanisms underlying this intention-behavior gap, the present study extended the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) by incorporating volitional factors (action and coping planning) and automatic processes (habit).
METHODS: A three-wave prospective survey was conducted among Chinese adults (N = 298). TPB variables and habit were assessed at Time 1, action and coping planning were assessed at T

BACKGROUND: Oral cancer is becoming a primary concern for non-communicable illnesses and global health care initiatives. Low-income people, people with disabilities, the elderly, residents of detached and rural regions, and people belonging to minority groups bear a greater burden of oral diseases. The purpose of this research is to identify rural women's oral cancer prevention activities using the theory of planned behavior (TPB).
METHODS: The current research is a cross-sectional analysis of 700 female hookah users who were referred to rural health facilities in Fasa and Shiraz, Fars, Iran

BACKGROUND: The Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) has been found to predict target behaviors. The literature examining this model lacks attention to violence toward nurses.
PURPOSE: To explore the association between the public's exposure to violence and intention to employ violence toward nurses, under the TPB framework.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study (705 participants) employed a self-report questionnaire. Path analysis assessed TPB variables' mediation between prior exposure to violence and violent intent toward nurses.
DISCUSSION: The TPB variables, that is attitudes, subjective norms,

The social networking site (SNS) Facebook is becoming increasingly recognized as a medium through which individuals can investigate and monitor others' activities. However, little is known about whether Facebook monitoring behavior occurs within romantic relationships and, accordingly, the psychological predictors of this behavior. The present study employed an extended theory of planned behavior (TPB) framework including self-esteem, partner trust, and demographic characteristics, to predict frequent Facebook partner-monitoring. Facebook users (N=244) in romantic relationships completed measu

OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to assess attitudes, subjective norms, and intentions about early smoking behavior among junior and senior high school students in Sampang, Madura, Indonesia.
CONTENT: Teenagers' smoking behavior is a phenomenon that needs careful examination and is easily recognized today. In Indonesia, the frequency of teenage smokers aged 10-18 years is growing every year. This age group is essential since most regular smokers start to smoke at this age. Although the Indonesian government has made preventive efforts, the prevalence of tobacco use remains high and continues to

BACKGROUND: Donor retention is vital to blood collection agencies. Past research has highlighted the importance of early career behavior for long-term donor retention, yet research investigating the determinants of early donor behavior is scarce. Using an extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), this study sought to identify the predictors of first-time blood donors' early career retention.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: First-time donors (n=256) completed three surveys on blood donation. The standard TPB predictors and self-identity as a donor were assessed 3 weeks (Time 1) and at 4 months (Tim

This study, guided by the theory of planned behavior (TPB), aimed to investigate whether attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control can predict parents' intentions to reduce or stop adding sugar to their child's beverages, such as tea or milk. The research also seeks to determine the predictive power of the TPB on the actual behavior of parents in reducing or halting sugar intake in their children's drinks. A questionnaire was developed to assess sweetening beverage behavior variables by mothers of children aged 3-7 years attending Lebanese public schools, with 184 responses

PROBLEM: Preventive interventions to reduce occupational injuries and health problems in farmers require the identification of factors that contribute to unsafe and health damaging behavior. This paper describes the development and validation of a self-report questionnaire, which measures the determinants of occupational health-related behaviors in farmers.
METHOD: A representative sample of 283 Flemish farmers completed a provisional 135 item questionnaire based on the Theory of Planned Behavior, measuring four behaviors related to occupational health (machinery use, animal handling, prevent

INTRODUCTION: Although military members often encounter significant atypical stressors while serving, many service members are still reluctant to seek mental health (MH) treatment. Help-seeking behavior for MH needs is a rising concern for active duty Air Force personnel. Conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, and substance abuse are just a few issues that military members deal with, but things like stigma, attitudes toward MH, and behavioral control might keep these individuals from seeking services. This study utilizes the theory of planned behavior (TPB) to

BACKGROUND: Using the theory of planned behavior (TPB), Haegele et al.1 created the beliefs of individuals with visual impairments about physical activity scale (BIVIPA-1) to examine individuals with visual impairments' (VI) motivation toward physical activity (PA). The overall factorial tenability of the BIVIPA-1 remains unclear due to its item configuration.
OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: The purposes of this cross-sectional study were to: (a) use confirmatory factor analysis to explore the structure of the expanded BIVIPA-2 and (b) test the predictive utility of TPB constructs on PA among adults wi

Given its serious implications for psychological and socio-emotional health, the prevention of problem gambling among adolescents is increasingly acknowledged as an area requiring attention. The theory of planned behavior (TPB) is a well-established model of behavior change that has been studied in the development and evaluation of primary preventive interventions aimed at modifying cognitions and behavior. However, the utility of the TPB has yet to be explored as a framework for the development of adolescent problem gambling prevention initiatives. This paper first examines the existing empir

BACKGROUND: Donor retention poses a significant problem to blood collection agencies around the world. Previous research using an augmented theory of planned behavior (TPB) approach has demonstrated that attitude, subjective norm, self-efficacy, moral norm, anticipated regret, donation anxiety from prior blood donations, and self-identity as a blood donor predicts experienced donors' intentions and that intentions, self efficacy, moral norm, and anticipated regret may impact upon people's actual blood donation behavior.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Established blood donors (n = 263) completed qu

BACKGROUND: University students' participation in leisure activities during their transition to adulthood supports their psychological, social, and physical development, and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) offers a framework to explain this. However, the literature shows that the contribution of leisure attitudes, motivation, and negotiation strategies to students' leisure participation and exercise participation has not been adequately addressed.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study, within the framework of the theory of planned behavior, examined the effects of leisure motivation, attit
