Knee Osteonecrosis: Cell Therapy with Computer-assisted Navigation.

BACKGROUND: The knee is the second-most common location for osteonecrosis, although it is affected much less often than the hip. Core decompression by precise drilling into ischemic lesions of the femoral condyle while remaining extra-articular is a challenge, particularly in obese patients. For cell therapy, exact localization of the injection point is important to avoid intra-articular injection. METHODS: The precision of drilling with computer-based navigation was compared to that of conventional fluoroscopy-based drilling. A prospective, randomized study was conducted using both surgical

Palmtop computer-assisted group therapy for social phobia.

This article describes the application of group computer-assisted therapy for social phobia. The computer program includes a diary function for ongoing self-monitoring of anxiety as well as guidance on the practice of relaxation, cognitive restructuring, and self-control desensitization. Although the program was originally designed to treat individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), it was hypothesized that the program also would be effective for individuals with social phobia; therefore, it was implemented in a group of individuals with a primary diagnosis of GAD or social phobia. Computer Assisted Planning for Curved Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy.

UNLABELLED: Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LiTT) isa minimally invasive alternative to conventional open surgery for drug-resistant focal mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE). Recent studies suggest that higher seizure freedom rates are correlated with maximal ablation of the mesialhippocampal head, whilst sparing of the parahippocampal gyrus (PHG) may reduce neuropsychological sequelae. Current commercially available laser catheters are inserted following manually planned straight-line trajectories, which cannot conform to curved brain structures, such as the hippocampus, without causing

Computer-assisted therapy for medication-resistant auditory hallucinations: proof-of-concept study.

BACKGROUND: One in four patients with schizophrenia responds poorly to antipsychotic medication, continuing to hear persecutory auditory hallucinations. Patients who are able to sustain a dialogue with their persecutor feel much more in control. AIMS: To develop a computerised system that enables the patient to create an avatar of their persecutor. To encourage them to engage in a dialogue with the avatar, which the therapist is able to control so that the avatar progressively yields control to the patient. METHOD: Avatar therapy was evaluated by a randomised, single blind, partial crossover

Using Artificial Intelligence to Identify Effective Components of Computer-Assisted Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Although clinician-supported computer-assisted cognitive-behaviour therapy (CCBT) is well established as an effective treatment for depression and anxiety, less is known about the specific interventions used during coaching sessions that contribute to outcomes. The current study used artificial intelligence (AI) to identify specific components of clinician-supported CCBT and correlated those scores with therapy outcomes. Data from a randomized clinical trial comparing clinician-supported CCBT with treatment as usual in a primary care setting were utilized. Participants (n = 95) engaged in CCBT

[Interactive computer-assisted learning program for diagnosis and therapy of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis].

BACKGROUND: With the increasing capacity of personal computers more and more multimedia training programs are becoming available which make use of these possibilities. Computer-based presentation is usually interesting because it is visually attractive. However, the extent to which computer-based training programs correspond to international standards of quality of software ergonomics has never been the subject of systematic research. Another question is how much these programs motivate learning and what increase in knowledge can be achieved by using them. METHODS AND RESULTS: Using a multime

Targeting Core Decompression and Cell Therapy Injection of Hip Osteonecrosis with Computer-Assisted Navigation.

PURPOSE: Surgical treatment of hip osteonecrosis with stem cell therapy is a new procedure in which cells are injected with a trocar under fluoroscopic guidance. Proper surgical technique to obtain appropriate placement of the trocar in the center of the osteonecrosis is sometimes difficult and can require additional radiation exposure until the surgeon is satisfied with the trocar position. This study describes an improvement of this procedure using computer-assisted navigation. METHODS: A prospective, randomized study was conducted on cadavers using surgical trainees with no experience and

Brain effects of computer-assisted cognitive remediation therapy in anorexia nervosa: A pilot fMRI study.

Poor cognitive-behavioral flexibility is considered a trait marker in anorexia nervosa (AN) that can be improved by cognitive remediation therapy (CRT). The present pilot study aimed at identifying changes in brain function potentially associated with CRT in AN. Data was obtained from a randomized, controlled trial. Twenty-four patients were assessed before and after 30 sessions of either CRT or a non-specific neurocognitive therapy. Voxel-wise analysis of whole brain functional magnetic resonance imaging was applied. Brain activation was measured during response inhibition and task switching.

Computer assisted therapy for multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury patients application of virtual reality.

For patients with multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury, virtual reality systems provide new methods of assistance with dysmetria, tremor, spasticity, and weakness. Robust mechanisms exist within the central nervous system to produce neuroplastic adaptive responses operative in retraining motor activities. Haptic systems cued by the patient's visual environment can produce force corridors to guide a patient's wrist and hand in the performance of specific tasks. Such haptic application can substantially reduce motor instability and improve performance. Preliminary clinical approaches, using

Cost-Effectiveness of Computer-Assisted Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Depression Among Adults in Primary Care.

IMPORTANCE: Approximately 1 in 5 adults are diagnosed with depression in their lifetime. However, less than half receive help from a health professional, with the treatment gap being worse for individuals with socioeconomic disadvantage. Computer-assisted cognitive behavioral therapy (CCBT) is an effective and convenient strategy to treat depression; however, its cost-effectiveness in a sociodemographically diverse population remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of clinician-supported CCBT compared with treatment as usual (TAU) in a primary care population with a sub

[The possibilities and outlook for using computer-assisted diagnosis and microwave resonance therapy in sexological practice].

Computer-aided diagnosis was performed, as recommended by Nakatani, in 117 male subjects with sexual problems; of these, 75 underwent microwave resonance therapy (MRT), with 21 subjects having it as a monomethod of their treatment. MRT was found to be useful in treatment of patients with ineroreceptive and psychogenic forms of sexual dysfunctions. Diagnosis according to Nakatani may be recommended for use as a paraclinical method to control the treatments administered.

Successful computer-assisted cognitive remediation therapy in patients with unipolar depression: a proof of principle study.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing awareness of the extent and severity of cognitive deficits in major depressive disorder (MDD), trials of cognitive remediation have not been conducted. We conducted a 10-week course of cognitive remediation in patients with long-term MDD to probe whether deficits in four targeted cognitive domains, (i) memory, (ii) attention, (iii) executive functioning and (iv) psychomotor speed, could be improved by this intervention. METHOD: We administered a computerized cognitive retraining package (PSSCogReHab) with demonstrated efficacy to 12 stable patients with recurren

[Computer-assisted EEG in epileptic patients treated with intermittent normobaric hypoxic therapy in combined treatment of epilepsy].

The article presents an analysis of bioelectrical brain activity in patients with epilepsy during adaptation to intermittent normobaric hypoxia. Before adaptation and after the 1st, 4th, 20th adaptation sessions, resting EEG and EEG during hyperventilation were registered. By the end of the hypoxic trainings, a significant increase of spectral power of the EEG bands was found in resting EEG. At comparing bioelectrical activity in the resting condition and during hyperventilation, the difference between these indices decreased towards the end of hypoxic therapy course. This evidence argues for
