Combined comfort model of thermal comfort and air quality on buses in Hong Kong.

Air-conditioning settings are important factors in controlling the comfort of passengers on buses. The local bus operators control in-bus air quality and thermal environment by conforming to the prescribed levels stated in published standards. As a result, the settings are merely adjusted to fulfill the standards, rather than to satisfy the passengers' thermal comfort and air quality. Such "standard-oriented" practices are not appropriate; the passengers' preferences and satisfaction should be emphasized instead. Thus a "comfort-oriented" philosophy should be implemented to achieve a comfortab

The impact of electric heating cape on local thermal sensation and thermal comfort of officers.

This study focuses on evaluating the thermoregulatory performance of a graphene-based electric heating cape and determining its optimal temperature for use in cool indoor environments during winter. Through controlled experiments with 30 participants in a climate chamber maintained at 15.5 °C, five heating conditions (no heating, 35 °C, 40 °C, 45 °C, and 50 °C) were systematically tested. Skin temperature and heart rate were continuously monitored, and subjective thermal sensation and comfort votes were collected using 7-point scales. Results demonstrated that the electric heating cape signifi

Environmental variables responsible for Zebu cattle thermal comfort acquisition.

The aim of this study was to estimate, using data mining, which microclimate and behavioral variables affect the behavior of animals to seek shaded or sunny areas. The experiment was carried out between January and May 2016 in an integrated crop-livestock-forest system. In this system, we defined two different areas: shaded and sunny. Microclimatic variables (At, BGt, RH, and WS) were measured in each area on 4 consecutive days per month. With these variables, we determined the bioclimatic indicators (THI, BGHI, HLI, MRT, RTL, and ETI). In addition, we calculated the absolute difference (Δ) by

Progress in thermal comfort research over the last twenty years.

Climate change and the urgency of decarbonizing the built environment are driving technological innovation in the way we deliver thermal comfort to occupants. These changes, in turn, seem to be setting the directions for contemporary thermal comfort research. This article presents a literature review of major changes, developments, and trends in the field of thermal comfort research over the last 20 years. One of the main paradigm shift was the fundamental conceptual reorientation that has taken place in thermal comfort thinking over the last 20 years; a shift away from the physically based de

A 43-year of human thermal comfort in Central Africa.

In this study, the human thermal stress was quantified across Central Africa (C.A.) using the Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI). Although many of the documented studies on the use of UTCI in relation to human health are currently restricted to countries in the northern hemisphere, this contribution constitutes a prerequisite of information for future research in the region. To mitigate the problem of lack of field data in the Central African sub-region, we downloaded UTCI data via the ERA5 reanalysis portal. Based on this data source, we have explored the spatiotemporal characteristics an

A review of mitigating strategies to improve the thermal environment and thermal comfort in urban outdoor spaces.

Urban open space provides various benefits to citizens, but the thermal environment of this space is impacted by global warming and urban heat islands. A growing number of studies have been conducted on strategies for improving the urban thermal environment and attracting more people to outdoor spaces. This paper reviews the mechanisms and cooling effects of four major mitigation strategies, namely, changing the urban geometry, planting vegetation, using cool surface, and incorporating bodies of water. Our review found that on summer days these four strategies yielded a median reduction in air

Optimal bus temperature for thermal comfort during a cool day.

A challenge for electric buses is to minimize heating and cooling power to maximally extend the driving range, but still provide sufficient thermal comfort for the driver and passengers. Therefore, we investigated the thermal sensation (TS) and thermal comfort (TC) of passengers in buses during a cool day (temperature 13.4 ± 0.5 °C, relative humidity (RH) 60 ± 5.8%) typical for the Dutch temperate maritime climate. 28 Males and 72 females rated TS and TC and gave information on age, stature, body weight and worn garments. The temperature in the bus of 22.5 ± 1.1 °C and RH of 59.9 ± 5.8% corres

Overall and thermal comfort under different temperature, noise, and vibration exposures.

Public transports like the bus and subway inherently experience noise, vibration, and temperature variations that are different from building environment. Each of them can influence passengers' comfort, but little is known about their combined effects, especially how they affect thermal comfort. This paper presents experimental results from a series of human subject tests under different noises, vibrations, and temperatures. 32 subjects' subjective perception and physiological response were collected under three temperatures (22.5, 25.5, 28.5℃), five noise levels (55, 60, 65, 70, 75 dB(A)), an

Effects of seasonal and climate variations on calves' thermal comfort and behaviour.

The aim of this study was to measure the effect of season and climate variations on thermal comfort and behaviour of 6-month-old dairy calves housed in a semi-opened shelter to develop animal-based indicators for assessing animal thermal comfort. The ultimate purpose was to further exploit the use of those indicators to prevent thermal stress by providing appropriate care to the animals. Measurements were taken for winter and summer seasons. Results showed that season significantly influenced (P ≤ 0.01) the lying down behaviour of calves by reducing the time spent lying, from 679.9 min in wint

CO2 Concentrations and Thermal Comfort Analysis at Onsite and Online Educational Environments.

In building areas with high occupancy, such as classrooms, transmission routes of SARS-CoV-2 are increased when indoor air quality is deficient. Under this scenario, universities have adopted ventilation measures to mitigate contagious environments. However, the lack of adequate equipment or designs in old educational buildings is a barrier to reach minimum requirements. This study aims to quantify the indoor air quality and thermal comfort at universities and compare it to conditions in students' households. In this regard, several classrooms in buildings of the Polytechnic University of Cata

Dependence of Thermal Comfort of Diving Suit on Neoprene Properties and Diving Depth.

Neoprene wetsuits experience significant thermal resistance degradation under hydro-static pressure, compromising diver safety and thermal comfort. Despite this known limitation, quantitative predictive models correlating material properties with thermal performance under diving conditions remain underdeveloped. This study quantified thermal resistance changes in commercial neoprene under simulated diving pressure (50, 100, 150, and 200 kPa, equivalent up to a 20 m depth) and developed predictive models for thermal performance degradation. A total of 33 commercially available neoprene sheets r
