Diverse anelloviruses identified in wild geladas (Theropithecus gelada).

Anelloviruses are circular single stranded DNA viruses that are highly prevalent among humans and other mammal and avian hosts, with persistent infections enduring throughout the lifespan without causing disease. Investigating these viruses in non-human primate hosts can offer a phylogenetic perspective on anellovirus-primate evolutionary dynamics, and studying wild populations can help build a translational framework for natural host-virus interactions. Here we report six complete anellovirus genomes identified in wild geladas (Theropithecus gelada), a primate endemic to the Ethiopian Highlan

Diet of Theropithecus from 4 to 1 Ma in Kenya.

Theropithecus was a common large-bodied primate that co-occurred with hominins in many Plio-Pleistocene deposits in East and South Africa. Stable isotope analyses of tooth enamel from T. brumpti (4.0-2.5 Ma) and T. oswaldi (2.0-1.0 Ma) in Kenya show that the earliest Theropithecus at 4 Ma had a diet dominated by C4 resources. Progressively, this genus increased the proportion of C4-derived resources in its diet and by 1.0 Ma, had a diet that was nearly 100% C4-derived. It is likely that this diet was comprised of grasses or sedges; stable isotopes cannot, by themselves, give an indication of t

Play and social dynamics in a captive herd of gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada).

Here, we provide quantitative data concerning adult and immature play distribution in geladas discussing the results in the light of their social dynamics. Sex differences in immature play does not seem to reflect sex differences in adult role; in fact, frequency, modality (C-play and LR-play), and motivation (measured by play initiations) to play did not vary according to the different sex-class combinations. The occurrence of adult-adult play suggests that geladas are characterized by an apparent more than actual rigidity in their social relationships and this is particularly evident in fema

Molecular identification of Taenia serialis coenurosis in a wild Ethiopian gelada (Theropithecus gelada).

Since morphological identification of a larval Taeniid in geladas (Theropithecus gelada) has produced inconsistent results, genetic information is pivotal for species identification. Nuclear and mitochondrial DNA from a coenurus in a wild gelada were compared to published sequences from multiple Taeniid species, confirming the identification of this parasite as Taenia serialis. A demographic analysis finds age to be a strong predictor of coenuri. Tapeworms rarely employ primates as intermediate hosts, and the presence of T. serialis in a wild gelada population may indicate a substantial ecolog

CARDIAC ASSESSMENTS AND IMPLANTABLE LOOP RECORDER PLACEMENT IN THREE MALE GELADAS (THEROPITHECUS GELADA).

Cardiac disease is a common cause of mortality in many primates housed in zoological settings. At the Bronx Zoo, between 2007 and 2018, there were ten incidences of sudden cardiac death in adult male geladas (Theropithecus gelada), none of which showed premonitory signs. Due to concerns of occult cardiac disease and fatal arrhythmogenic events, complete cardiac examinations were performed in three clinically normal, adult male geladas. Examinations included thoracic radiographs, transthoracic echocardiograms (echo), 12-lead ECG, and continuous ECG monitoring using an Implantable Loop Recorder

Cercopithecoid cervical vertebral morphology and implications for the presence of Theropithecus in early Pleistocene Europe.

While it is recognized that the overall configuration of the vertebral column, as well as the size and shape of individual vertebrae, differ within and between primate taxa, relatively little is known about the degree to which vertebral morphology reflects a phylogenetic signal or the degree to which vertebral elements can be used in accurate taxonomic classification. Isolated vertebrae are occasionally found in fossil assemblages, and proper taxonomic identification is necessary to make inferences about the animal's biology and place it in a broader phylogenetic and evolutionary context. Wild geladas (Theropithecus gelada) in crops-more than in pasture areas-reduce aggression and affiliation.

Human-primate interfaces are expanding and, despite recent studies on primates from peri-urban environments, little research exists on the impact of agriculture and/or pasture areas on primate social behavior and health. We assessed how crop/pasture areas potentially alter social behavior and health of wild geladas (Theropithecus gelada) frequenting the unprotected area of Kundi (Ethiopia). We predicted that compared to pasture areas, crop areas (i) would be more challenging for geladas (prediction 1) and (ii) would have a greater impact on both aggressive and affiliative behavior, by reducing

Early-life infection dynamics and genomic diversity of adenoviruses in a wild primate (Theropithecus gelada).

In humans, adenoviruses (AdVs) are frequently associated with respiratory illnesses, posing risks to children with developing immune systems and immunocompromised individuals. Outbreaks and epidemics are generally centred in close-contact settings, such as childcare facilities, and transmission occurs through faecal-oral and airborne pathways. AdVs have coevolved across the primate lineage, but very little is known about whether the early-life dynamics in non-human primates mirror those in humans. Here, we leverage longitudinal data collected on a population of geladas (Theropithecus gelada) i

Identification in gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada) of a distinct simian T-cell lymphotropic virus type 3 with a broad range of Western blot reactivity.

Antibodies to simian T-cell lymphotropic virus (STLV) were found in serum or plasma from 12 of 23 (52.2 %) gelada baboons (Theropithecus gelada) captive in US zoos. A variety of Western blot (WB) profiles was seen in the 12 seroreactive samples, including human T-cell lymphotropic virus (HTLV)-1-like (n=5, 41.7 %), HTLV-2-like (n=1, 8.3 %), HTLV-untypable (n=4, 33.3 %) and indeterminate (n=2, 16.6 %) profiles. Phylogenetic analysis of tax or env sequences that had been PCR amplified from peripheral blood lymphocyte DNA available from nine seropositive geladas showed that four were infected wit

Cladistic analysis of extant and fossil African papionins using craniodental data.

This study examines African papionin phylogenetic history through a comprehensive cladistic analysis of extant and fossil craniodental morphology using both quantitative and qualitative characters. To account for the well-documented influence of allometry on the papionin skull, the general allometric coding method was applied to characters determined to be significantly affected by allometry. Results of the analyses suggest that Parapapio, Pliopapio, and Papio izodi are stem African papionin taxa. Crown Plio-Pleistocene African papionin taxa include Gorgopithecus, Lophocebus cf. albigena, Proc

Gelada feeding ecology in an intact ecosystem at Guassa, Ethiopia: Variability over time and implications for theropith and hominin dietary evolution.

Recent evidence suggests that several extinct primates, including contemporaneous Paranthropus boisei and Theropithecus oswaldi in East Africa, fed largely on grasses and sedges (i.e., graminoids). As the only living primate graminivores, gelada monkeys (Theropithecus gelada) can yield insights into the dietary strategies pursued by extinct grass- and sedge-eating primates. Past studies of gelada diet were of short duration and occurred in heavily disturbed ecosystems. We conducted a long-term study of gelada feeding ecology in an intact Afroalpine ecosystem at Guassa, Ethiopia. Geladas at Gua

Inferring Plio-Pleistocene southern African biochronology from facial affinities in Parapapio and other fossil papionins.

Buried in the same South African cave deposits as Australopithecus, fossil papionins have been referred to Parapapio (Pp. whitei, Pp. broomi, Pp. jonesi, Pp. antiquus), Papio (P. izodi, P. angusticeps, P. h. robinsoni), Theropithecus (e.g., T. darti), Gorgopithecus, or Dinopithecus on the basis of postcanine tooth size and descriptive morphology of the muzzle. The morphological patterns of variation that these papionins demonstrate can help to place the Australopithecus fossils into a biochronological context and provide valuable information for reconstructing regional Plio-Pleistocene turnove

Intestivirid Acquisition Increases Across Infancy in a Wild Primate Population.

Intestivirids (order Crassvirales, family Intestiviridae), viruses that infect Bacteroidales bacteria in the mammalian gastrointestinal tract, have been identified as a highly abundant component of the healthy human virome that may shape patterns of human health and disease through direct action on the microbiome. While double-stranded DNA bacteriophages called crAssphages (Carjivirus communis) that infect bacteria in the Bacteroidales order have been identified in humans within the first month of life, the enormous variation in post-parturition infant environments and diets has inhibited a ro

Fossil Cercopithecidae from the Hadar Formation and surrounding areas of the Afar Depression, Ethiopia.

Hadar is well known as one of the most productive early hominin sites in the world. Between 1972 and 1994 a large sample of fossil cercopithecid specimens was collected from Hadar and the nearby sites of Geraru, Ahmado, and Leadu. At least five, and possibly six, species are present in the sample, including two chronological subspecies of Theropithecus oswaldi. T. o. cf. darti is known from the Middle Pliocene deposits in the Hadar area, along with Parapapio cf. jonesi, cf. Rhinocolobus turkanaensis, and a new species of Cercopithecoides, C. meaveae. There are also isolated molars from the Mid

Fitness impacts of tapeworm parasitism on wild gelada monkeys at Guassa, Ethiopia.

Parasitism is expected to impact host morbidity or mortality, although the fitness costs of parasitism have rarely been quantified for wildlife hosts. Tapeworms in the genus Taenia exploit a variety of vertebrates, including livestock, humans, and geladas (Theropithecus gelada), monkeys endemic to the alpine grasslands of Ethiopia. Despite Taenia's adverse societal and economic impacts, we know little about the prevalence of disease associated with Taenia infection in wildlife or the impacts of this disease on host health, mortality and reproduction. We monitored geladas at Guassa, Ethiopia ov

Leishmania aethiopica: experimental infections in non-human primates.

Six Cercopithecus aethiops monkeys, 4 Theropithecus gelada baboons and 2 Papio anubis baboons were infected using Leishmania aethiopica isolates originating either from localized (LCL) or diffuse (DCL) cutaneous leishmaniasis patients. The history of lesions in 4 C. aethiops monkeys infected by LCL strains mimicked the process in human LCL patients. Infection of 2 C. aethiops monkeys using a DCL strain resulted in localized, non-ulcerative, self-healing nodular lesions. Such lesions were also observed in 2 T. gelada baboons infected by LCL strains. Active lesions and healing in C. aethiops and

Chimpanzees empathize with group mates and humans, but not with baboons or unfamiliar chimpanzees.

Human empathy can extend to strangers and even other species, but it is unknown whether non-humans are similarly broad in their empathic responses. We explored the breadth and flexibility of empathy in chimpanzees, a close relative of humans. We used contagious yawning to measure involuntary empathy and showed chimpanzees videos of familiar humans, unfamiliar humans and gelada baboons (an unfamiliar species). We tested whether each class of stimuli elicited contagion by comparing the effect of yawn and control videos. After including previous data on the response to ingroup and outgroup chimpa

Social engagement modulates wild monkeys' vocal expressions and the behavioral response to that of others.

Animal vocal communication relies on the dynamic interaction between emitter and receiver, with signals shaped within a social and embodied context. To fully understand how such interactive processes operate, we used yawn vocalizations of geladas (Theropithecus gelada), a species showing exceptional yawning variability. We first examined yawn calls produced in three contexts: high-intensity social, low-intensity social, and non-social context and found clear acoustic differences among them, revealing context-dependent modulation in a typically stereotyped behavior. We conducted field playback
