Video Game-Induced Theta Rhythm.

Smartphones and other personal electronic devices present novel cortical processing tasks with potential for identification of novel EEG waveforms. A 17-year-old patient with epilepsy manifested as recurrent myoclonic seizures, absence seizures, and a single generalized tonic-clonic seizure was hospitalized to undergo video-EEG monitoring for seizure quantification and classification of the epilepsy syndrome. During the monitoring session, a frontocentral predominant 5 to 6 Hz theta rhythm was identified only when the patient was actively texting or playing a video game on his smartphone. Prev

Theta rhythms: state of consciousness.

The role of midline frontal theta in human is discussed, with reference to its relation on consciousness. Clinical observations of the appearance of this theta activity under various conditions are reviewed. These include simulated diving, brain tumour, chemical intoxication, exercise, mental calculation, sleep and medication. The mechanism of generation of this frontal midline theta activity is discussed.

Cholinergic Regulation of Hippocampal Theta Rhythm.

Cholinergic regulation of hippocampal theta rhythm has been proposed as one of the central mechanisms underlying hippocampal functions including spatial memory encoding. However, cholinergic transmission has been traditionally associated with atropine-sensitive type II hippocampal theta oscillations that occur during alert immobility or in urethane-anesthetized animals. The role of cholinergic regulation of type I theta oscillations in behaving animals is much less clear. Recent studies strongly suggest that both cholinergic muscarinic and nicotinic receptors do actively regulate type I hippoc

Rat hippocampal theta rhythm during sensory mismatch.

It has been suggested that sensory mismatch induces motion sickness, but its neural mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate this issue, theta waves in the hippocampal formation (HF) were studied during sensory mismatch by backward translocation in awake rats. A monopolar electrode was implanted into the dentate gyrus in the HF, from which local field potentials were recorded. The rats were placed on a treadmill affixed to a motion stage translocated along a figure 8-shaped track. The rats were trained to run forward on the treadmill at the same speed as that of forward translocation of the m

Frontal midline theta rhythm in young healthy adults.

In this study, we examined the relationship between the frontal midline (Fm) theta rhythm that appears when a healthy subject is engaged in mental tasks and the theta rhythm which appears in the frontal region of healthy subjects during light drowsiness. The samples for this study were obtained from 465 EEGs of healthy Japan Air Self Defense Force personnel. The 39 who had frontal theta rhythm during light drowsiness were selected to be included in the theta group. For the control group, 34 subjects were randomly selected from the remaining 426 without frontal theta rhythm. When these subjects

Working memory readout varies with frontal theta rhythms.

Increasing evidence suggests that attention varies rhythmically, phase locked to ongoing cortical oscillations. Here, we report that the phase of theta oscillations (3-6 Hz) in the frontal eye field (FEF) is associated with the spatiotemporal variation of information readout from working memory (WM). Non-human primates were briefly shown a sample array of colored squares. A short time later, they viewed a test array and were rewarded for identifying which square changed color (the target). Behavioral performance varied systematically with theta phase at the time of test array onset, as well as

Model of gradual phase shift of theta rhythm in the rat.

CA1 pyramidal cell is modeled by a linked series of passive compartments representing the soma and different parts of the dendritic tree. Intracellular postsynaptic potentials are simulated by conductance changes at one or more compartments. By assuming an infinite homogeneous extracellular medium and a particular geometrical arrangement of pyramidal cells, field potential profiles are generated from the current source-sinks of the compartments. The pyramidal cells are driven at the theta (theta)-frequency at different sites of the dendritic tree in order to simulate external driving of hippoc

Theta rhythms in the EEG: a genetic trait in childhood epilepsy.

Rhythmic theta activity maximally expressed in the parietobasal leads is a characteristic interictal EEG pattern in infants and children with primarily generalized "corticoreticular" seizures, including febrile convulsions. It is a strictly age-dependent electroencephalographic expression of a widespread genetic disposition to convulsions. If it coincides with photosensitivity, it leads to a considerable risk of spikes and waves. As epidemiological and family studies have shown, it is most likely polygenically determined and genetically independent of both photosensitivity and focal sharp wave

Multiple hypothalamic sites control the frequency of hippocampal theta rhythm.

Stimulation of a neural pathway originating in the brainstem reticular formation, with synapses in the medial hypothalamus, activates the hippocampal theta rhythm. The frequency of reticular-elicited theta is determined in the medial supramammillary nucleus (mSuM) completely in anaesthetised rats, but only partially when the animal is awake. We tested other medial hypothalamic sites for their capacity to control theta frequency in awake rats. Blockade of sodium channels (1 microl fast infusion of the local anaesthetic procaine, experiment 1) or increased inhibition by GABA (Chlordiazepoxide [C

Perspective: Hippocampal theta rhythm as a potential vestibuloacoustic biomarker of anxiety.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses - afflicting 19% of Americans every year and 31% within their lifetimes - yet diagnoses remain based on symptom checklists because existing technologies have yet to produce biomarkers sufficiently robust for clinical use. Some techniques provide superior spatial resolution of deep brain regions implicated in anxiety but have poor time resolution; while others measure signals in real time but lack spatial resolution. Often, the goal of probing deep brain regions in humans for anxiety research is to measure a putative analogue of a mammalian

Hippocampal Respiration-Driven Rhythm Distinct from Theta Oscillations in Awake Mice.

UNLABELLED: We have recently described a slow oscillation in the hippocampus of urethane-anesthetized mice, which couples to nasal respiration and is clearly distinct from co-occurring theta oscillations. Here we set out to investigate whether such type of patterned network activity, which we named "hippocampal respiration rhythm" (HRR), also occurs in awake mice. In freely moving mice, instantaneous respiration rate is extremely variable, and respiration is superimposed by bouts of sniffing. To reduce this variability, we clamped the behavior of the animal to either awake immobility or treadm

Role of the occipito-temporal theta rhythm in hand visual identification.

Neuroimaging and EEG studies have shown that passive observation of the full body and of specific body parts is associated with 1) activity of an occipito-temporal region named the extrastriate body area (EBA), 2) amplitude modulations of a specific posterior event-related potential (ERP) component (N1/N190), and 3) a theta-band (4-7 Hz) synchronization recorded from occipito-temporal electrodes compatible with the location of EBA. To characterize the functional role of the occipito-temporal theta-band increase during the processing of body-part stimuli, we recorded EEG from healthy participan

Is electrical coupling involved in the generation of posterior hypothalamic theta rhythm?

Data obtained in in vitro experiments and urethane anaesthetized animals have revealed that the mechanisms responsible for the generation of hippocampal cholinergic theta rhythm are specifically affected by the administration of broad spectrum gap junctions (GJs) blocker - carbenoxolone (CBX). The aim of this study was to examine the effect of GJs modulation on the production of posterior hypothalamic theta. Specifically, we were interested in evaluating whether CBX could attenuate the theta rhythm recorded from the supramammillary nucleus and posterior hypothalamic nuclei, in both in vitro an

UNLABELLED: Basing on the examination of 82.767 EEGs, 118 patients with theta rhythm variant (GRV) were found out. From their case-histories all particulars taken to be important were gathered by means of a questionnaire. In addition to this 70 of these patients were interviewed, mostly in the course of a visit at home, in order to supplement the data by catamnestic informations. Moreover, attending family doctors were asked for informations, and from 14 patients elsewhere recorded EEGs were evaluated. RESULTS: With regard to its cycles per second, the GRV proved to be stable even for long pe

[Theta rhythms and positive bioccipital waves in the EEG during sleep].

Bioccipital theta rhythm and positive occipital sharp waves during sleep were observed in 46 of 192 neurologic patients. The age ranged of the patients between 15-54. The percentual incidence of this pattern (about 24%) was independent on the age. There was found a striking female preponderance in the young age group. The major symptom associated with this wave form were epileptic seizures (43%) and normocalcemic tetany (39%). 49% of patients had this EEG pattern as their single abnormality. In addition to this pattern 40% of them had also non-specific EEG abnormalities and 11% epileptic activ

Vagus nerve stimulation produces a hippocampal formation theta rhythm in anesthetized rats.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) has been used for years to treat patients with drug-resistant epilepsy. In the present study, the effect of different stimulation protocols of VNS on the hippocampal formation (HPC) type II theta field potentials were evaluated in anesthetized rats. The following theta parameters were analysed: power, frequency and duration of theta epochs. We documented for the first time the presence of HPC type II theta in response to the application of VNS. A VNS-induced theta rhythm appeared in different experimental protocols and, depending on the current intensity, could oc

Theta rhythm of hippocampal CA1 neuron activity: gating by GABAergic synaptic depolarization.

Information processing and memory consolidation during exploratory behavior require synchronized activity known as hippocampal theta (theta) rhythm. While it is well established that the theta activity depends on cholinergic inputs from the medial septum/vertical limb of the diagonal band nucleus (MS/DBv) and theta discharges of GABAergic interneurons, and can be induced with cholinergic receptor agonists, it is not clear how the increased excitation of pyramidal cells could occur with increased discharges of GABAergic interneurons during theta waves. Here, we show that the characteristic thet

Theta rhythm supports hippocampus-dependent integrative encoding in schematic/semantic memory networks.

Integrating new information into existing schematic/semantic structures of knowledge is the basis of learning in our everyday life as it enables structured representation of information and goal-directed behaviour in an ever-changing environment. However, how schematic/semantic mnemonic structures aid the integration of novel elements remains poorly understood. Here, we showed that the ability to integrate novel picture information into learned structures of picture associations that overlapped by the same picture scene (i.e., simple network) or by a conceptually related picture scene (i.e., s
