Motivations for dieting: Drive for Thinness is different from Drive for Objective Thinness.

Drive for thinness is a cardinal feature of bulimia nervosa. However, the widely used Drive for Thinness (DFT) subscale of the Eating Disorder Inventory (Garner, 2004; Garner, Olmstead, & Polivy, 1983) appears to measure a desire to be thinner, not a desire to be objectively thin. We developed the Drive for Objective Thinness (DFOT) Scale and compared unrestrained and restrained eaters and those with bulimia nervosa on the DFT subscale, Goldfarb's Fear of Fat Scale (GFFS; Goldfarb, Dykens, & Gerrard, 1983), and the DFOT Scale. Restrained eaters had higher scores than unrestrained eaters on the

Metabolic and pathophysiological characterization of constitutional thinness.

PURPOSE: Constitutional thinness (CT) is characterized by a persistently low body weight in the absence of eating disorders or overt disease. Distinguishing CT from anorexia nervosa (AN) is often challenging, and the metabolic and cardiovascular features of CT remain incompletely defined. The present study investigated nutritional, metabolic, and cardiovascular parameters in women with CT and compared them with those of women with AN and normal-weight healthy controls. METHODS: Data from 7 women with CT were compared with those from 6 women with AN and 6 normal-weight healthy women serving as

Constitutional thinness and anorexia nervosa: a possible misdiagnosis?

Clinical and biological aspects of restrictive anorexia nervosa (R-AN) are well documented. More than 10,000 articles since 1911 and more than 600 in 2013 have addressed R-AN psychiatric, somatic, and biological aspects. Genetic background, ineffectiveness of appetite regulating hormones on refeeding process, bone loss, and place of amenorrhea in the definition are widely discussed and reviewed. Oppositely, constitutional thinness (CT) is an almost unknown entity. Only 32 articles have been published on this topic since 1953. Similar symptoms associating low body mass index, low fat, and bone

Genetic architecture of human thinness compared to severe obesity.

The variation in weight within a shared environment is largely attributable to genetic factors. Whilst many genes/loci confer susceptibility to obesity, little is known about the genetic architecture of healthy thinness. Here, we characterise the heritability of thinness which we found was comparable to that of severe obesity (h2 = 28.07 vs 32.33% respectively), although with incomplete genetic overlap (r = -0.49, 95% CI [-0.17, -0.82], p = 0.003). In a genome-wide association analysis of thinness (n = 1,471) vs severe obesity (n = 1,456), we identified 10 loci previously associated with obesi

Constitutional thinness: unusual human phenotype of low bone quality.

CONTEXT: Low fat mass and hormonal or nutritional deficiencies are often incriminated in bone loss related to thinness. Constitutional thinness has been described in young women with low body mass index (BMI) but close-to-normal body composition, physiological menstruation, no hormonal abnormalities, and no anorexia nervosa (AN) psychological profile. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine whether constitutional thinness is associated with impaired bone quality. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was an observational, cross-sectional study on 25 constitutionally thin and 44 AN young

Preference for thinness in Singapore--a newly industrialised society.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: A cultural preference for thinness has been implicated in the development of eating disorders in Western, post-industrialised societies. In transitional societies like Singapore, a shift in expectations of ideal body size (toward thinness) may lead to an increase in eating disorders. This study investigated perceptions about body size and shape in over 200 youths living in Singapore, and the influences of adiposity, gender, Westernization and parents' education. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was used to gather social and cultural information from 137 males and 14

Maternal Thinness and Obesity and Customized Fetal Weight Charts.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to determine if customized fetal growth charts developed excluding obese and underweight mothers (CC(18.5-25)) are better than customized curves (CC) at identifying pregnancies at risk of perinatal morbidity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data from 20,331 infants were used to construct CC and from 11,604 for CC(18.5-25), after excluding the cases with abnormal maternal BMI. The 2 models were applied to 27,507 newborns and the perinatal outcomes were compared between large for gestational age (LGA) or small for gestational age (SGA) according to each model. Logistic

Drive for thinness in black and white preadolescent girls.

This study examined racial differences in drive for thinness, a motivational variable implicated in the etiology of eating disorders. Subjects included 613 black and white preadolescent girls from one of three National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) Growth and Health Study centers. Instruments included the Drive for Thinness Scale, a Criticism about Weight scale, the Self-Perception Profile for Children, a Sexual Maturation index, and 3-day food diaries. Black girls reported significantly greater drive for thinness than white girls. Drive for thinness was significantly associated wit

Differentiating constitutional thinness from anorexia nervosa in DSM 5 era.

INTRODUCTION: Constitutional thinness (CT) is an underweight state characterized by normal menstruations and no change in feeding behaviour. Thinness is the only resemblance between Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and CT. Removal of amenorrhea from the new DSM 5 definition of AN might result in misdiagnosis between these two populations. The objective of this study was to compare CT, AN and Control subjects in terms of biological, anthropometric, and psychological markers in order to better distinguish AN from CT subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Body composition, nutritional markers, pituitary hormones

Persistent thinness and anorexia nervosa differ on a genomic level.

Thinness and anorexia nervosa are both characterised by persistent low weight. Individuals with anorexia nervosa concurrently report distorted perceptions of their body and engage in weight-loss behaviours, whereas individuals with thinness often wish to gain weight. Both conditions are heritable and share genomics with BMI, but are not genetically correlated with each other. Based on their pattern of genetic associations with other traits, we explored differences between thinness and anorexia nervosa on a genomic level. In Part 1, using publicly available data, we compared genetic correlation

Examining implicit attitudes toward emaciation and thinness in anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if females with anorexia nervosa (AN) associate emaciation with beauty by examining implicit attitudes toward emaciated bodies relative to thin bodies. METHOD: Thirty women with AN and 29 healthy control women were primed by viewing images of either emaciated or thin women. Participants then completed a lexical decision task (LDT), wherein they distinguished words from nonwords as quickly and accurately as possible. Response times were measured. Real words consisted of beautiful, ugly, neutral, and positive words. Body mass index (BMI) was measured and several clinical

The pursuit of thinness: an outcome study of anorexia nervosa.

INTRODUCTION: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a growing problem among young female Singaporeans. We studied the demographics and follow-up data of AN patients referred to dietitians for nutritional intervention. METHODS: A retrospective nutritional notes review was done on 94 patients seen from 1992 to 2004. All patients were given nutritional intervention, which included individualised counselling for weight gain, personalised diet plan, correction of poor dietary intake and correction of perception towards healthy eating. We collected data on body mass index (BMI), patient demographics and outcome

Characteristics of eating disorder patients without a drive for thinness.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate two samples of patients affected by anorexia nervosa (AN) or bulimia nervosa (BN), respectively, with and without the diagnostic feature of drive for thinness (DT). METHOD: The samples comprised 70 consecutive eating disorder (ED) outpatients at the Department of Psychiatry (University of Pisa) and 106 AN patients admitted to a day hospital in Toronto, Canada. Subjects were assessed on clinical and psychometric parameters. RESULTS: In both countries, 17% of the subjects had low DT as measured by the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI). They com

Assessing the Relationship Between Drive for Thinness and Taste-Shape Correspondences.

Eating disorder tendencies are psychological characteristics that are prevalent in healthy young females and are known to be among the risk factors for eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia nervosa. People with greater eating disorder tendencies strongly associate sweet and fatty foods with weight gain and strictly avoid consuming such foods. However, little is known about how eating disorder tendencies influence the association between taste and body shape impression. Research on crossmodal correspondences suggests that people preferentially associate sweet tastes with round shapes, a

Smoking and pursuit of thinness in schoolgirls in London and Ottawa.

It has been proposed that teenage girls often smoke cigarettes to protect themselves from the impulse to binge eat, with its feared weight-gain consequences, particularly when other measures such as greater dietary restraint have failed. The present study looked at the relationship between body mass index and standardised questionnaire responses concerning smoking, alcohol consumption, moods, weight changes, attitudes to body weight and shape, dietary patterns and menstruation in 1936 British (London) and 832 Canadian (Ottawa) schoolgirls. Data analysis revealed links between cigarette smoking

Weight Bias Internalization and Thinness-Oriented Body Dissatisfaction Explain the Link Between Experienced Weight Stigma and Thinness-Oriented Disordered Eating: A Four-Wave Longitudinal Study in Chinese Adolescents.

OBJECTIVES: Experienced weight stigma and weight bias internalization pose deleterious effects on physical and psychological health. Existing research largely relies on cross-sectional studies and frequently omits non-Western populations. This study examined the temporal pathways between experienced weight stigma, weight bias internalization, thinness-oriented body dissatisfaction, and thinness-oriented disordered eating in Chinese adolescents. METHOD: Participants included 10th-grade Chinese students (N = 985) enrolled in a longitudinal study between 2022 and 2024. Four waves of data were co

Physical Capacities are Differentially Altered in Anorexia Nervosa and Constitutional Thinness.

INTRODUCTION: Physical capacities partly depend on body mass and composition. Anorexia nervosa (AN) and constitutional thinness (CT) are two distinct low-weight conditions with different muscle phenotypes. While AN is associated with impaired physical performance, this remains unclear in CT. This study aims to directly compare physical capacities in women with AN, CT, and normal-weight controls (CON). METHODS: 84 women (29 AN, 24 CT, 31 CON) were recruited. Measurements included baroreflex sensitivity, handgrip and leg extension strength, cardiopulmonary exercise testing, and subjective fatig

Circadian profiles of free plasma metanephrines in anorexia nervosa and constitutional thinness.

PURPOSE: Catecholamine metabolism contributes to energy homeostasis and may differ in low-weight conditions of various origins. Free plasma metanephrines, 3-methoxytyramine (3-MT), normetanephrine (NM), and metanephrine (M), are stable end-products of dopamine, noradrenaline, and adrenaline metabolism, respectively, with potential circadian rhythmicity. However, their 24-hour profiles remain unknown in anorexia nervosa (AN) and constitutional thinness (CT). METHODS: This exploratory study aimed to assess 24-hour variations of plasma free metanephrines in women with acute AN (n = 10), recoveri
