Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in dogs with spontaneous hypercortisolism.

Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) are laboratory markers of oxidative stress, which can be used to evaluate the lipid peroxidation that characterizes cell membrane damage caused by excess free radicals. This prospective study aimed to assess TBARS as a parameter of lipid peroxidation in dogs with spontaneous hypercortisolism (HC) at the time of diagnosis, and after trilostane treatment. Furthermore, it aimed to investigate the correlations between TBARS levels, and laboratory and cardiovascular parameters. Sixteen dogs with HC were evaluated at 3 different time points: At diagnos

Values of sperm thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance in fertile men.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to establish for the first time reference levels of sperm malondialdehyde, a stable lipid peroxidation product, in a cohort of fertile men. METHODS: Sperm malondialdehyde, a thiobarbituric acid-reactive substance, was assayed using the 2-thiobarbituric acid method. RESULTS: Sperm malondialdehyde levels, expressed in nM/10(8) spermatozoa, were normally distributed in our cohort of fertile men and averaged 0.0287 +/- 0.0162 (mean +/- S.D.). CONCLUSIONS: Given the impact of lipid peroxidation on spermatozoa and thereby on male fertility, the assay of

Evaluation of Oxidative Stress in Biological Samples Using the Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substances Assay.

Despite its limited analytical specificity and ruggedness, the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay has been widely used as a generic metric of lipid peroxidation in biological fluids. It is often considered a good indicator of the levels of oxidative stress within a biological sample, provided that the sample has been properly handled and stored. The assay involves the reaction of lipid peroxidation products, primarily malondialdehyde (MDA), with thiobarbituric acid (TBA), which leads to the formation of MDA-TBA2 adducts called TBARS. TBARS yields a red-pink color that can be

Beta-carotene generates thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances by interaction with nitrogen dioxide in air.

Generation of thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) from methyl linoleate in the exposure of nitrogen dioxide/air was inhibited by beta-carotene in a dose-dependent manner. However, introduction of nitrogen dioxide/air or oxygen into a solution of beta-carotene generated a significant amount of TBARS accompanying loss of its characteristic yellow color. Storing beta-carotene in a solid state at ambient temperatures in air generated a large amount of TBARS accompanying loss of its yellow color. TBARS from beta-carotene may interfere the measurement of TBARS from polyunsaturated fatty

Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) investigation of the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) reaction.

The thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) assay is a commonly used method for the detection of lipid peroxidation. Malondialdehyde is formed as a result of lipid peroxidation and reacts with thiobarbituric acid to form a pink pigment that has an absorption maximum at 532 nm. Other compounds also react with thiobarbituric acid to form colored species that can interfere with this assay, but little is known about these interfering species. This is the first investigation using LC-MS and MS-MS to study the structures of the pink adduct as well as a common unstable yellow interference com

Thiobarbituric Acid-Reactive Substances: Markers of an Acute Episode and a Late Stage of Bipolar Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Lowered antioxidant defense systems and increased oxidative stress are implicated in bipolar disorders (BD). Early and late stages of BD may present different biological features (including the level of oxidative stress) and may therefore require different treatment strategies. The aim of this study was to analyze serum levels of lipid peroxidation [measured as thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), a derivative of malondialdehyde] in BD patients at various stages and phases of the illness and compare their TBARS levels with those of healthy controls. METHOD: A total of

Simultaneous production of carbon monoxide and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances in rat tissue preparations by an iron-ascorbate system.

Most of the carbon monoxide (CO) produced by mammals is a product of the heme oxygenase (HO) reaction, the rate-limiting step in the heme degradation pathway leading to the generation of bilirubin in man. However, some CO is derived from other sources. We studied the association of CO production with lipid peroxidation in tissue preparations from adult male Wistar rats. Supernatants, from 20% tissue homogenates in potassium phosphate buffer, centrifuged for 1 min at 13,000 x g, were incubated for 30 min at 37 degrees C in septum-sealed vials in the dark with ascorbate (100 microM) and Fe(II) (

Plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances, vitamin A and vitamin E levels and resumption of postpartum ovarian activity in dairy cows.

Vitamins with antioxidative functions are commonly used as supplements to improve fertility in dairy cows. However, according to field test results uncertainty exists about the effect of these vitamins, especially in vitamin A and vitamin E, on ovarian functional activity. This study was performed to reveal the physiological characteristics of cows receiving enough feed and the ovaries of which were activated in the early postpartum period. Six of 12 primiparous cows showing the corpus luteum on 25 to 27 days after parturition were classified as early responders (PER); the remaining six were c
