Annals of agricultural and environmental medicine : AAEM2019eng
INTRODUCTION: Thiram, a fungicides, is widely used on seeds and as foliar agent on turf, vegetables and fruit. It is also used in the rubber industry as a vulcanization accelerator. When absorbed through the respiratory system, it is rapidly metabolised to dimethylthiocarbamate and carbon disulphide, causing noxious effects. A brief review is presented of the literature, centering on the interesting case of a 45-year-old woman admitted to the hospital suffering from acute respiratory failure.
RESULTS: Computer tomography in angiographic option (angio-CT) showed an extensive, irregular area of

Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) is an uncommon, nonthrombocytopenic hypersensitivity vasculitis that is often idiopathic, but may be induced by infectious agents, drugs, foods, environmental chemicals, or insect bites. To our knowledge, we report the first recognized case of HSP following exposure to the widely used industrial and agricultural agent, tetramethylthiuram disulfide. Few reports of HSP or other vasculitides resulting from exposure to structurally similar compounds are available. Despite the widespread use of tetramethylthiuram disulfide, many cases of exposure may remain unrecogniz

Thiram is used in large quantities in agriculture and may contaminate the environment by improper handling or storage in chemical plants and warehouses. A review of the literature has shown that thiram can affect different organs in animals and its toxic mechanisms can be elucidated in more detail at molecular level. We have summarized several impacts of thiram on animals: the effects of the perspectives of oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage, autophagy, apoptosis, and the IHH/PTHrP pathway on regulating abnormal skeletal development in particular tibial dyschondroplasia and kyphosis; angio

Strains of Rhizobium meliloti, Rhizobium sp. nodulating cowpeas, and R. phaseoli derived from cultures susceptible to tetramethylthiuram disulfide (thiram), 2,3-dichloro-1,4-naphthoquinone (phygon), and 2,3,5,6-tetrachloro-p-benzoquinone (spergon), respectively, grew in the presence of high concentrations of the fungicides and converted them to products not toxic to the sensitive rhizobia. The results of chemical assays demonstrated that the pesticides were destroyed by the resistant bacteria but not by the susceptible parent rhizobia. Resting cells of thiram-metabolizing R. meliloti formed la

The persistent migration of pesticides into aquatic ecosystems poses severe risks to environmental and public health. Monitoring pesticide residues along these migration pathways is therefore critical. Herein, we report the first application of a three-dimensional (3D) photonic microsphere surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate (ZIF-8 PCMs-NH2@AuNPs) for the targeted adsorption and trace detection of the pesticide thiram. Synthesized via microfluidics, these hierarchically porous metal-organic framework microspheres overcome the poor reproducibility of conventional substrates by

Thiram is a dithiocarbamate pesticide that causes tibial dyschondroplasia (TD), a growth plate defect, in poultry. Deaths of transitional zone chondrocytes appear to interrupt endochondral bone development leading to the broadening of growth plate. The mechanism of action of thiram on chondrocytes is not well understood. Since proteins play major roles in different aspects of cell's metabolism, growth, and survival, the objective of this study was to find whether thiram produces proteomic changes that could impair the development of chondrocytes. The chondrocytes, isolated from proximal tibial

Thiram (TMTD), a widely used dithiocarbamate fungicide, provokes oxidative hepatotoxicity, yet practical strategies for its detection and immunoprotection remain scarce. Here we develop an antibody-enabled framework integrating detection, therapy, and prevention against TMTD. In the murine model, we characterized the dose-dependent hepatic injury induced by TMTD. Guided by rational C3/C7 hapten design, we then generate a monoclonal antibody with high affinity. Building on this reagent, we create a portable immunodetection platform that couples Au nanoflowers with an Au/Ir@Zn/Cu-MOF probe, achi

Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is most the common tibiotarsal bone disease in rapidly growing birds throughout the world. There is accumulating evidence that COX-2 abnormal expression in tibia plays an important role in TD progression. So, the regulation of COX-2 is an ever more appealing target for therapeutic intervention in TD. Astragaloside IV has an indispensable role in maintaining COX-2 expression in many diseases. So, we designed this study to use Astragaloside IV (AST-IV) against TD-affected chickens. A total of 180 Arbor Acres chickens were randomly divided in the control group, TD gro

Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a metabolic cartilage disease of young poultry in which endochondral bone formation is disrupted leading to the retention of a non-calcified, avascular plug of cartilage in the tibial growth plate. Chicks aged 7 days were fed either a control diet or one containing thiram 100 ppm for 48 h to induce TD. Cell multiplication in the growth plate was determined thereafter with bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) labelling, and metabolic changes by measuring alkaline phosphatase (ALP), tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP), and glutathione (GSH) activities. The effect on ch

Thiram (TMTD) is a widely used dithiocarbamate pesticide and fungicide and is one of potent contact allergens. In the light of known properties, thiram is also considered to be used as an inhibitor of inflammation. To investigate whether known pro-oxidative properties of thiram might be involved in immunogenic mechanisms, we carried out an in vitro study aimed at analysis of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, activation of NF-κB, expression of iNOS and COX-2, production of NO, PGE2 and IL-1β in murine macrophage cells (RAW 264.7). The cells were treated by thiram alone (0.5 µg/mL; 2 μM

Fungicide thiram, which is also known as an inducer of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), was used as a model compound of thiuram chemicals, and its cellular effects were investigated in cultured Chinese hamster V79 cells. The level of intracellular reduced glutathione (GSH), protein sulfhydryl (PSH) groups, protein carbonyls (PC), membrane lipid peroxidation reflected by enhanced thiobarbituric acid reactive substrates (TBARS) production, as well as apoptotic effect were determined. The apoptosis induction was determined by assessing DNA fragmentation by TUNEL, annexin V binding, and caspases

Thiram, a commonly used agricultural insecticide and fungicide, has been found to cause tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) in broilers, leading to substantial economic losses in the poultry industry. In this study, we aimed to investigate the mechanism of action of leucine in mitigating thiram-induced TD and leucine effects on gut microbial diversity. Broiler chickens were randomly divided into five equal groups: control group (standard diet), thiram-induced group (thiram 80 mg/kg from day 3 to day 7), and different concentrations of leucine groups (0.3%, 0.6%, 0.9% leucine from day 8 to day 18). Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a developmental cartilaginous disease due to thiram toxicity. The abnormity of chondrocytes and insufficient angiogenesis within the growth plate are the major factors leading to the occurrence of TD in most cases. In the current study, we evaluated the beneficial effects of ginsenoside (Rg1) against thiram-induced TD for knowing the possible underlying mechanisms in broiler chickens through in vivo and in vitro assessment. Arbor acres broilers (1-day-old, n = 120) were randomly divided for the in vivo evaluation. The control broilers were fed under normal condi

Tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) is a common skeletal disease occurred in growth plate of fast-growing broilers. Thiram is a sort of chemical used for pesticide and fungicide. The excessive use of thiram increased the threat to animal and human health. In this study, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic mechanism of chlorogenic acid (CGA) on thiram-induced tibial dyschondroplasia. Broiler chickens were divided into three different groups, e.g., control, TD, and CGA. CGA was administrated after the induction of TD from 4th day to 7th day. Biochemical analysis was performed to detect the content

Tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (thiram) is a dithiocarbamate, which is widely used on seeds and storing food grains. The incorporation of thiram into the food chain could be a risk for both human beings and animals. Thiram-contaminated feed has been considered a common cause of tibial dyschondrolplasia (TD) in many avian species. The molecular mechanism of action of thiram on TD involving microRNA (miRNA) is not fully understood. For this purpose, the morbidity and pathologic changes were evaluated to understand the TD, and high-throughput RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed to explore the d

Tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (thiram) is one of the important pesticides, which is extensively used in agriculture, but if it is combined with the cell membrane, then it causes membrane damage, bone morphogenic inactivation, and inhibited angiogenesis. Thiram has been considered a common cause of tibial dyschondrolplasia (TD) in various avian species, because it becomes the part of feed due to environmental contamination and its overuse in agriculture as pesticides or fungicide. However, there is no systematic study on the changes of the correlation indexes with toxic effect of the thiram in

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful tool for rapid on-site detection of pesticide residues, but its performance heavily relies on the substrate. Herein, a gelatin‑silver nanocube (Ag NC) composite hydrogel SERS substrate was developed via mild EDC-NHS crosslinking coupled with low-temperature gelation. The three-dimensional porous hydrogel efficiently enriches target molecules, while the sharp edges of Ag NCs generate abundant electromagnetic hotspots. Using rhodamine 6G as a probe, the optimized substrate (20% gelatin, Ag NC/gelatin volume ratio 3:1) exhibited good uniformi

BACKGROUND: Thiram, a representative dithiocarbamate pesticide, has been widely applied in agriculture to prevent fungal infections in crops. However, its excessive residues in food and aquatic products pose serious health risks, including hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, and neurotoxicity. Conventional detection techniques such as chromatography and mass spectrometry, though accurate, require complex instrumentation, skilled operation, and laboratory conditions, making them unsuitable for on-site testing. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a portable, rapid, and sensitive sensing pl
