Thoracic splanchnic nerves conduct pain sensation from the abdominal organs around the celiac ganglion. Splanchnicectomy is the procedure used mainly for the control of intractable visceral pain. Forty-six human posterior thoracic walls were dissected. The formation pattern, course, and incidence of communication of the thoracic splanchnic nerves were investigated. The greater splanchnic nerves (GSNs) were formed by nerve branches from the T4-T11 thoracic sympathetic ganglia and the most common type was formed by T5-T9 (21.7%). The uppermost branches originated from T4-T9 while the lowermost b

The anatomical features of the autonomous nerves, including the greater, lesser and least splanchnic nerves, were examined in 4 female and 4 male adult pigs (Sus scrofa). The origin and course of these nerves were examined with regard to sex and the side of the body. The greater splanchnic nerve was present in all of the animals included in the study, whereas the lesser splanchnic nerve was present at a rate of 87.5% on the right side and 75% on the left side of the median plane. On the other hand, the least splanchnic nerve was present on the right side at a rate of 62.5% and on the left side

We investigated the safety and usefulness of chitosan nano/microfiber mesh tubes (C-tubes) in regenerating damaged thoracic autonomic nerves. Animal experiments were performed in six dogs. The right thoracic sympathetic nerve (Experiment 1, n=3) and phrenic nerve (Experiment 2, n=3) were resected and sutured with C-tubes. After surgery, in Experiment 1, Horner's syndrome was observed. In Experiment 2, mobility of diaphragm was assessed by chest X-ray imaging. Nerve regeneration was assessed pathologically in both experiments. All six dogs survived without complication throughout the observatio

When studying phylogenetic transformations of the sympathetic trunk, a theoretical possibility has been substantiated that in Mammalia a caudal continuation of the vertebral nerve in the thoracic area can exist. By means of some embryological and anatomical methods, in man and in certain animals (cat, dog), together with the cervical, the thoracic vertebral nerve has been revealed. The latter has an appearance of a plexus situating on the rudimentary thoracic vertebral artery wall and is formed at the expense of the multisegmentary distribution of the gray connective branches fibers. Anatomica

Anatomical variation of the thoracic splanchnic nerves is as diverse as any structure in the body. Thoracic splanchnic nerves are derived from medial branches of the lower seven thoracic sympathetic ganglia, with the greater splanchnic nerve comprising the more cranial contributions, the lesser the middle branches, and the least splanchnic nerve usually T11 and/or T12. Much of the early anatomical research of the thoracic splanchnic nerves revolved around elucidating the nerve root level contributing to each of these nerves. The celiac plexus is a major interchange for autonomic fibers, receiv

While in many cases they are not directly visualized, awareness of the thoracic nerves and their courses at cross-sectional imaging is important for radiologists. An understanding of the normal function of each nerve is important, as many patients present with neurologic signs and symptoms that can be used to reinforce search patterns for disease and detection of supportive radiologic abnormalities. In the case of primary neoplasms, understanding the expected presence of a nerve in the location of a mass can enhance and improve the accuracy of differential diagnoses. Even in the absence of neu

BACKGROUND: Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) therapy has been used for chronic heart failure and is believed to improve imbalance of autonomic control by increasing parasympathetic activity. Although it is known that there is neural communication between the VN and the cervical sympathetic trunk, there are few data regarding the quantity and/or distribution of the sympathetic components within the vagus nerve (VN).
OBJECTIVE: To examine the sympathetic components within the human VN and correlate them with the presence of cardiac and neurologic diseases.
METHODS: We performed immunohistochemist

Lymphatic vessels from animals have been shown to be innervated. While morphological studies have confirmed human lymphatic vessels are innervated, functional studies supporting this are lacking. The present study demonstrates a functional innervation of the human thoracic duct (TD) that is predominantly adrenergic. TDs harvested from 51 patients undergoing esophageal and cardia cancer surgery were either fixed for structural investigations or maintained in vitro for the functional assessment of innervation by isometric force measurements and electrical field stimulation (EFS). Electron micros

The thoracic cardiac nerves were stimulated in each of 21 dogs anesthetized with alpha chloralose. Recordings were made of heart rate, blood pressure, and contractile force from all four cardiac chambers. Walton-Brodie strain-gauge arches were sutured to both atria, and to three locations of each ventricle, representing both anterior and posterior surfaces. The functional autonomic components of each nerve were summarized and classified into four basic types. Types I and II were both located medial to the thoracic vagi. These were shown to contain both sympathetic and parasympathetic component

Nerve injury occurs in about 1% of patients undergoing thoracic surgery. Most commonly, it is the result of surgical trauma specific to the area of operation. Alternatively, it may be due to retraction on adjacent structures during the exposure of complex surgical procedures. This article reviews the most common types of nerve injury and discusses the pathophysiology, etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of each.

Injury to the long thoracic nerve causing paralysis or weakness of the serratus anterior muscle can be disabling. Patients with serratus palsy may present with pain, weakness, limitation of shoulder elevation, and scapular winging with medial translation of the scapula, rotation of the inferior angle toward the midline, and prominence of the vertebral border. Long thoracic nerve dysfunction may result from trauma or may occur without injury. Fortunately, most patients experience a return of serratus anterior function with conservative treatment, but recovery may take as many as 2 years. Bracin

The internal thoracic (mammary) nerve is formed by contributions from the subclavian plexus and the phrenic nerve. It descends along the internal thoracic artery to the level of the seventh costal cartilage where it is lost. Some of its branches communicate with the intercostal nerves and are thought to be distributed with these nerves. Others follow perforating and anterior mediastinal arteries.

Lipomatosis of nerve (LN), or fibrolipomatous hamartoma, is a rare condition of fibrofatty enlargement of the peripheral nerves. It is associated with bony and soft tissue overgrowth in approximately one-third to two-thirds of cases. It most commonly affects the median nerve at the carpal tunnel or digital nerves in the hands and feet. The authors describe a patient with previously diagnosed hemihypertrophy of the trunk who had a history of large thoracic lipomas resected during infancy, a thoracic hump due to adipose proliferation within the thoracic paraspinal musculature, and scoliotic defo

Decompression of the long thoracic nerve (LTN) is a potentially beneficial procedure for selected patients with LTN palsy. The aim of this work is to describe the surgical anatomy of the thoracic part of the LTN and highlight its variations. A retrospective review of patients undergoing exploration of the LTN was performed. Preoperatively, all patients had serratus anterior dysfunction and underwent electromyographic (EMG) assessment. All patients had an initial trial of nonoperative management. The surgical procedures were undertaken by the senior author. The anatomy of the LTN and the associ

Two cases of long thoracic nerve palsy associated with thoracic outlet syndrome are reported. Both patients had abnormal posture, with low-set shoulders and winged scapulae. Clinically there was weakness of the serratus anterior muscle with partial denervotion on electromyography. The diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome was based on positive vascular tests and brachial plexus nerve compression symptoms induced by the vascular testing positions. An orthosis that held the shoulder in an elevated position was used in both cases. Complete recovery of shoulder function and relief of the symptoms

The formation and structure of the greater, lesser, and least thoracic splanchnic nerves is highly variable in their intrathoracic as well as their subdiaphragmatic portion. Splanchnicectomies for pain control of otherwise intractable upper abdominal pain and other surgical procedures are dependent on the detailed knowledge of the anatomy of these nerves and their variations. Many commonly used anatomical illustrations depict the passage of the thoracic splanchnic nerves through the diaphragm uniformly as three nerves penetrating the crura in three separate locations along a rough superoinferi
