Allergic rhinitis to thuja pollen.

Allergy to pollen of Cupressaceae has been linked to pollens of Cupressus, Juniper and Cryptomeria. The authors report 2 cases of rhinitis and conjunctivitis induced by thuja, another member of the Cupressaceae family. Monosensitization to thuja pollen has been identified as the causal agent: (1) of a long-standing springtime rhinitis in 1 patient with negative skin tests and specific IgE titers to the main inhalants (specificity of the prick test and nasal provocation with the thuja extract was confirmed by a positive RAST) and (2) in a 2nd patient without former history of allergy, who consu

Role of thuja in the management of laryngeal papilloma.

Juvenile respiratory laryngeal papillomatosis is a subset of a larger clinical entity of recurrent respiratory papillomatosis. It is characterised by the development of recurrent papillomata in the vocal folds. Human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 has been implicated to be the most common strain of virus associated with the formation of laryngeal papilloma. Clinical diagnosis is based on typical appearance of warty lesion on endoscopy. Surgery is the primary line of management along with adjuvant therapy like antiviral drugs and immunomodulators. Thuja occidentalis is a tree native to North Ame

Histamine release by Western red cedar (Thuja plicata) from lung tissue in vitro.

Evans, Elizabeth and Nicholls, P. J. (1974).British Journal of Industrial Medicine,31, 28-30. Histamine release by Western red cedar(Thuja plicata)from lung tissue in vitro. Various respiratory symptoms have previously been observed in workers exposed to dust from Western red cedar (Thuja plicata). Although an allergic basis for these effects has been proposed, the possibility that the dust may contain a pharmacologically active agent was investigated. Aqueous extracts of two samples of red cedar released significant amounts of histamine from pig and human lung in vitro. For one of these sampl

Spatial structuring of root-associated bacteria and metabolic landscapes in an endangered cliffside conifer Thuja sutchuenensis Franch.

Understanding how plant-microbe-soil interactions vary across spatial scales is essential for elucidating belowground ecological dynamics, particularly in rare and ecologically sensitive species. Here, we investigated the diversity, function, and assembly of root-associated bacterial communities in Thuja sutchuenensis Franch. along continuous vertical gradients. Through an integrative multi-omics approach, morphological assessment, and soil physicochemical profiling, we uncovered a compartmentalized and spatially structured rhizosphere system. We observed a marked enrichment of soil nutrients,

Screening of Promising Chemotherapeutic Candidates from Plants against Human Adult T-Cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (VII): Active Principles from Thuja occidentalis L.

During the screening of novel chemotherapeutic candidates from plants against adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma, we identified that the extracts of Thuja occidentalis (Cupressaceae) showed potent anti-proliferative activity in MT-1 and MT-2 cells. Therefore, we attempted to isolate the active components from this plant. We isolated and identified 32 compounds (1-32; eight lignans, 18 terpenoids, and six flavonoids) from the extracts of the leaves and cones. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analysis. Several of the isolated compounds inhibited the growth of both cell lines. Lignan
