To understand the thymic hormone production in thymic tumors and the myasthenic thymus, we have studied the concentrations of two thymic hormones (prothmosin alpha and thymosin beta 4) in these tissues. A total of forty four thymus or thymic tumor tissues were obtained from patients who underwent thoracic operation. These tissues consisted of a control group (n = 25) and three study groups including a thymoma group (N = 8), thymic carcinoma group (n = 3) and myasthenic thymus group (n = 8). The age-related curve of the control group, which provided histologically normal thymic tissues for the

Perfectly projected and impeccably created, the endocrine system precisely regulates the most delicate immune processes. The immune and neuroendocrine systems are two essential physiological components of mammalian organisms important for protection from the infection and disease on one hand, and on the other, for regulation of metabolism and other physiological activities; namely, the evidence has been found indicating that there is active and dynamic collaboration of these systems in the execution of their designated functions. These interactions occur at many stages of embryonic and neonata

This paper reviews the mechanism of sex hormone actions on the thymus, presenting mainly our data obtained at the cellular and molecular levels. First, data supporting the "genomic" action via the nuclear sex hormone receptor complexes are as follows: 1) sex hormone receptors and the thymic factor (thymulin) are co-localized in thymic epithelial cells, but not in T cells; 2) production/expression of thymic factors (thymulin, thymosin alpha 1) are remarkably inhibited by sex hormone treatment; 3) sex hormones cause changes in T cell subpopulations in the thymus; and 4) sex hormones strongly inf

The thymus gland is a central lymphoid organ in which developing T cell precursors, known as thymocytes, undergo differentiation into distinct type of mature T cells, ultimately migrating to the periphery where they exert specialized effector functions and orchestrate the immune responses against tumor cells, pathogens and self-antigens. The mechanisms supporting intrathymic T cell differentiation are pleiotropically regulated by thymic peptide hormones and cytokines produced by stromal cells in the thymic microenvironment and developing thymocytes. Interestingly, in the same way as T cells, t

It is stated that in women with the abortion threat at any term of gestation (I, II, III trimesters) the endocrine function of the thymus essentially increases. The role of hormones in the thymic activity disorder is studied. It is shown that insufficiency of the functional activity of the trophoblast ranks first in the mechanism of hormonal regulation of thymic endocrine function in nonbearing of pregnancy. The other significant reason of an essential increase in the titer of thymic serum factor (TFS) is a disorder in interconnections inside the hypophyseal-adrenal system. Determination of TF

The evaluation and selection of the preparations of thymic hormones for the treatment and prophylaxis of acute tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) caused by Far Eastern TBE virus strains have been carried out on mice under different experimental conditions. These virus strains, highly and faintly virulent with respect to noninbred mice, produce a different modulating effect of the immune responsiveness of the host, respectively suppressing or simulating immune response to sheep red blood cells. A high prophylactic effect produced by thymic hormones (having protective index equal to 50-67%) with resp

The thymus is necessary for the development of T lymphocytes and central tolerance, and adaptations in the maternal thymus are required during pregnancy. In the present paper, maternal thymic cellular anatomy, T-cell development in the thymus, and related progress are reviewed. In addition, the recent progress in maternal thymic adaptations during pregnancy is discussed, including adaptations in thymic cellular anatomy, T-cell development, and immune-related cytokines. Finally, the latest information about hormones that regulate thymic immunology during pregnancy is summarized. In summary, the

Hormonal homeostasis was examined in 104 children aged 1 to 14 years with thymus enlargement. There was a significant growth of somatotropic hormone in children of the first 3 years of life, characterized by thyroid dysfunction and hypofunction increase with age, by a tendency towards ACTH and hydrocortisone lowering under 6 years of age, and a significant decrease of those parameters in children over 6 years. The children with thymus enlargement also showed other disorders of hormonal homeostasis.

Outbred Swiss mice show a stable level of circulating thymic factor (TF) (measured by its action on theta-positive rosette-forming cells (RFC) until the 6th month of life. Afterwards, this level progressively declines. Swiss mice genetically selected as `high' and `low' responders for anti-sheep red blood cell haemagglutinin production show no difference with ordinary Swiss mice with regard to serum TF level. This observation is compatible with previous results showing that the selection mainly induces changes in B-cell reactivity without T-cell modification. Conversely, genetic selection of S

The thymus is a central immune organ for T cell development and plays an extremely important role in immune and aging. The unique physiological processes that occur in women, such as the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause, contribute to sexual dimorphism in thymic immunity. Thymic epithelial cells (TECs) are key stromal cells that affect thymus development and degeneration. Interestingly, TECs in women have stronger proliferation potentiality and ability for output of T cells than those in men. In comparison to men, women exhibit higher susceptibility to autoimmune disease, which can be

Premature immune ageing, including thymic atrophy, is observed in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Parathyroid hormone (PTH) and fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23), which are mineral and bone disorder (MBD)-related factors, affect immune cells and possibly cause thymic atrophy. We examined the cross-sectional association between thymic atrophy, evaluated as the number of CD3+CD4+CD45RA+CD31+ cells [recent thymic emigrants (RTE)/μL], and MBD-related factors [(serum PTH, FGF23, and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) level] in 125 patients with non-dialysis dependent CKD. A 61-year-old woman was admitted to the hospital because of general fatigue. Laboratory examinations showed hyponatremia, plasma hypo-osmolarity, and inappropriate increased concentration of the plasma antidiuretic hormone (ADH) in the presence of concentrated urine. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass lesion in the anterior mediastinum. An extended thymectomy was performed under the diagnosis of thymoma with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Histologically the tumor was located in the thymic tissue and was diagnosed as ganglioneuroblastoma. Immuno

Correction of T-cell defects by either thymic hormone treatment or thymus transplantation has proven to be more difficult clinically than historically anticipated. Because the precise action of thymic hormones is unknown and because these hormones act upon post-thymic cells, therapeutic attempts may fail owing to lack of sufficient substrate population. Results of thymic transplantation suggest that this procedure may be best utilized for the treatment of mild T-cell defects, rather than as complete replacement treatment for severe deficiency. Future clinical trials of thymic transplantation o

As gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is expressed in the thymus, its direct action on thymic cells, including thymic involution, has been suggested. Annexin A5 (ANXA5), a biomarker of GnRH, was used to determine whether GnRH affects the thymus of male rats. Immunohistochemistry showed positive reactions for ANXA5 in large medullary epithelial cells at 30 days of age, and the expression continued until 180 days of age. Organ culture of thymus pieces was performed to examine the direct action of a GnRH agonist (GnRHa) on the expression of Anxa5 and Gnrh mRNA. Thymus tissues obtained from mal

Ectopic ACTH secretion accounts for less that 10% of all causes of endogenous Cushing's syndrome. Carcinoids are rare thymic tumors, and when associated with ACTH hypersecretion display local or distant aggressive behavior. A 32-year-old woman was admitted to the Endocrinology Unit for obesity, moon face, facial hirsutism, hyperpigmentation, and secondary amenorrhea. Laboratory test confirmed the hypercortisolism and excess ACTH, while dexamethasone suppressive test was negative. Thorax computed tomography (CT) showed an antero-superior mediastinal tumor invading the pericardium and left media

Prior research in this laboratory has shown that dexamethasone, aldosterone, and epinephrine interact in regulating the activity of ornithine decarboxylase (EC 4.1.1.17, ODC) in rat thymus and liver. The three primary adrenal hormones were administered alone and in various combinations to adrenalectomized rats. Liver and thymus samples were removed, prepared for electron microscopy, and morphometric analysis of thymic micrographs was performed. It was found that both corticosteroids induced thymic lympholysis and that concurrent administration of epinephrine 'rescued' the lymphocytes. Observat
