Chondrosarcoma of the thyroid cartilage is a sporadic disease with nonspecific clinical presentation. Smooth swelling of the supraglottic area should arouse suspicion of possible pathology. In addition to laryngoceles, which usually do not have a significant impact, otolaryngologists should consider chondrosarcoma of the thyroid cartilage and indicate computed tomography (CT). Late diagnosis leads to worse prognosis, particularly worse voice after more extensive surgery, need for tracheostomy, and worse survival from higher degree chondrosarcomas.

Radiotherapy is a widely used treatment modality for various cancers, particularly head and neck malignancies. While effective, it can result in a range of adverse effects and complications that impact the patient's quality of life. Chondroradionecrosis (CRN) has been identified as a significant concern, particularly affecting the laryngeal cartilage. We present the case of a 55-year-old male diagnosed with poorly differentiated cancer of the left thyroid lobe with areas of anaplastic differentiation. He underwent total thyroidectomy in April 2021, followed by external beam radiation therapy (

We report a case of a 77-year-old female with purulent chondritis of the thyroid cartilage who was initially referred for laryngeal neoplasm. Purulent chondritis of the laryngeal cartilage is a rare entity with three reports in the literature. The unique CT imaging features of expansile laryngeal cartilage with peripheral rim enhancement and central fluid-attenuation correlate to the abscess formation between the inner and outer perichondria. The correct imaging assessment prompts surgical management and avoid misdiagnosis.

We describe the diagnostic workup and surgical treatment of a patient presenting with the unique case of vertebral artery (VA) occlusion subsequent to head flexion leading to compression of an aberrant VA by the ipsilateral superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage. Imaging revealed ischemic infarcts as well as the presence of an aberrant right VA, which was compressed by the ipsilateral superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage upon neck flexion. The patient was managed with laryngoplasty involving removal of the right superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage. Laryngoscope, 129:E445-E448, 2019.

We measured lateral (outward) thyroid cartilage displacement (TCD) of the larynx in six supine anesthetized (intravenous chloralose) dogs. Combined left and right TCDs were measured with linear transducers attached by a thread to the thyroid alae. During tidal breathing via a tracheostomy, phasic inspiratory TCD occurred in all dogs [0.66 +/- 0.2 mm (mean +/- SE)] together with phasic inspiratory electromyographic activity in the cricothyroid (CT) and posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscles. During brief tracheal occlusions, TCD increased significantly to 1.27 +/- 0.2 mm (P = 0.001), accompanie

Laryngeal chondrosarcoma is rare and accounts for 0.2% of all larynx malignancies. Although chondrosarcoma is the most common sarcoma seen in the larynx, laryngeal involvement by cartilage tumors is rare. In this article, we aimed to present the differential diagnosis of chondrosarcoma located in the thyroid cartilage, which is a rare site, in a 75-year-old male patient. The patient underwent total laryngectomy by the otolaryngology department. The macroscopy of the laryngectomy material sent to the pathology laboratory revealed a 3x2 cm tumor with a polypoid extension to the lumen from the bo

A 60-year-old male presented with hoarseness. His past medical history was remarkable for a plasmacytoma of the left maxillary sinus having been resected without systemic evidence of plasma cell myeloma (PCM), also known as multiple myeloma (MM), at the time. This maxillary sinus disease recurred and was treated with radiation. Workup for PCM was conducted. Treatment included melphalan and autologous stem cell transplant. Because of the therapeutic and prognostic implications, a Plasma cell neoplasm (PCN) in a neck mass must be carefully evaluated by clinical and pathological criteria in order

We describe an unusual laryngeal anomaly incidentally detected in an adult male patient who had suffered from chronic dysphonia since infancy with no change of voice quality over time. Laryngostroboscopy revealed a formation originating below the anterior commissure and protruding through the vocal folds, which computed tomography scan showed to be a calcified spur on the internal surface of the thyroid cartilage. The patient's clinical history of long-term dysphonia with a stable voice quality suggests that the anomaly may be congenital. To the best of our knowledge, no similar laryngeal malf

Purulent chondritis of the laryngeal cartilage is defined as a chondritis of the laryngeal framework cartilage with abscess formation between the inner and outer perichondria. To the best of our knowledge, only 1 report of purulent chondritis of the laryngeal framework cartilage has been published previously in the English language literature. Our patient suffered from generalized weakness, myalgias, and sore throat for 1 month and hoarseness for 10 days before diagnosis. Fiberoptic laryngoscopy demonstrated a granuloma-like, whitish, exophytic mass in the anterior commissure of the false voca

A woman in her 70s with a history of chronic minocycline use presented with complaints of a non-tender posterior neck mass. A thyroid gland ultrasound showed a highly suspicious right thyroid nodule. A total thyroidectomy revealed darkened discolouration of the thyroid gland and tracheal cartilage. The pathology report showed dark brown granules representing melanin. Chronic minocycline usage is known to cause pigmentation of nails, teeth, bones and the thyroid gland. Our case highlights the importance of recognising that long-term use of minocycline can cause discolouration of the thyroid and

OBJECTIVE: Anatomic abnormalities in the larynx can cause significant and bothersome symptoms. Identified here is an anatomical variant of the thyroid cartilage.
STUDY DESIGN: This study is a retrospective case series of 11 subjects diagnosed with an anatomic variant of the thyroid cartilage.
METHODS: Patients with an anatomic inward buckling of the thyroid cartilage, termed here as buckled thyroid cartilage, were identified through a 20-year retrospective chart review of a tertiary care laryngology practice.
RESULTS: We describe 11 patients with fullness or asymmetry in the area of the fal

Multiple myeloma, solitary plasmacytoma, and extramedullary plasmacytoma constitute a continuous disease spectrum of plasma cell neoplasms. In the larynx, although extramedullary plasmacytoma in the supraglottic region has been sometimes reported, plasma cell neoplasm with involvement of the thyroid cartilage is extremely rare. We report a case of multiple myeloma involving the thyroid cartilage. A 72-year-old male patient presented with a pathological fracture of the cervical vertebrae. CT scan revealed low-density areas within the thyroid cartilage, but the laryngeal mucosa and submucosal so

Riedel's thyroiditis (RT) is a rare IgG4-related disease typically presenting with fibrotic thyroid enlargement and compressive symptoms. However, we herein report an unusual case of probable RT that involved laryngeal invasion and the thyroid cartilage destruction. In this case, a 46-year-old man presented with hoarseness, dysphagia, and a laryngeal mass. Imaging further revealed the thyroid cartilage permeative destruction with communication into the laryngeal lumen, raising suspicion of malignancy. Subsequent surgical exploration showed inflammatory granulation tissue eroding the thyroid ca

Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma (BSCC) with a spindle cell component of the head and neck is an uncommon entity. In this case, we present a radiology-pathology correlation of a rare laryngeal BSCC with sarcomatous transformation and osteosarcomatous differentiation involving the laryngeal cartilage, which thus mimicked clinically and radiographically osteosarcoma or chondrosarcoma with calcification. Microscopic examination revealed predominantly BSCC with extensive osseous metaplasia among sheets and nests of basaloid tumor cells. There were also small foci of osteosarcoma, undifferentiated

This study was carried out to ascertain whether the cartilage-shaving procedure is appropriate to control thyroid carcinoma with tracheal cartilage invasion. Of 432 thyroid carcinoma patients treated between 1979 and 1988, 16 had tracheal cartilage invasion only. This patient population was made up of 3 men and 13 women, with a mean age of 55.8 years. Fourteen were diagnosed histologically as having papillary carcinoma and the remaining two as having follicular carcinoma. Cartilage shaving was the primary treatment in all the patients, and subsequent radioactive iodine (131I) or external-beam

OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: We report a unique case of Bow Hunter's syndrome with a dominant aberrantly coursing right vertebral artery (VA), presenting with persistent dizziness and syncope despite previous decompressive surgery at vertebral levels C5-C6.
RESULTS: Re-evaluation with computed tomography-scan during provocation of dizziness by neck rotation revealed compression of the right VA at level C6 from against the ipsilateral posterior border and superior cornu of the thyroid cartilage. Laryngoplasty resulted in complete resolution of symptoms.
CONCLUSION: This extremely rare cause of Bow

A 46-year-old patient had had a slowly growing progressive but painless prelaryngeal space-occupying lesion for approximately 1 year. In addition there was also a longstanding hyperuricemia with gout tophi on the metatarsal basal joints 1-5 of both hands. The extirpated tumor proved to be a gout tophus by histological examination. Although this is a rare occurrence it should be considered as the possible cause of a tumor if there is a corresponding case history.

Myeloma involving the laryngeal cartilage is rare, whereas extramedullary plasmacytoma involving only the thyroid cartilage is even rarer. No case of de novo extramedullary plasmacytoma involving thyroid cartilage has been published so far. Hence, it was a diagnostic challenge for clinicians, radiologists, and pathologists. Here, we presented a case of a 61-year-old man who had fixed right laryngeal swelling. After 18 F-FDG PET/CT, biopsy, and myeloma workup, it was found to be plasmacytoma involving the right thyroid cartilage lamina. This case highlighted the rarity of this presentation and
