Thyroid Diseases.

Thyroid hormones in horses fluctuate with factors like time of day, diet, activity, or medications. True hypothyroidism is rare in adults, and other causes for the observed clinical signs, such as equine metabolic syndrome, should be considered. Hyperthyroidism can occur in older horses and is sometimes associated with clinical signs requiring surgical treatment. In neonatal foals, distinct forms of hypothyroidism are associated with dysmaturity and can be life-threatening. While thyroid supplementation can help in managing equine metabolic syndrome, inappropriate use can impair athletic perfo

Comprehensive research on thyroid diseases associated with autoimmunity: autoimmune thyroid diseases, thyroid diseases during immune-checkpoint inhibitors therapy, and immunoglobulin-G4-associated thyroid diseases.

Various thyroid diseases are associated with autoimmunity. Major autoimmune thyroid diseases are Graves' disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). Thyrotropin receptor is an autoantigen in GD, and its immunogenicity has been examined. Immune-checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) is recently widely used for treatment of malignant tumors, but cases of thyroid diseases during ICI treatment have been increasing. Thyroid diseases during ICI therapy have been investigated in immunological and clinical aspects, and their Japanese official diagnostic guidelines were established. In addition, serum and tissu

[Arterial thyroid embolization in thyroid diseases].

Traditional forms of treatment of the thyroid diseases: pharmacotherapy, radioiodine therapy and surgery can not always be applied. Intolerance, side effects of antithyroid drugs, low iodine uptake, high risk of surgery or disagreement with the proposed treatment was the reason for seeking alternative healing methods. With the development of interventional radiology, and gained experience in the use of arterial embolization, this method has become possible to use in treatment of thyroid diseases. The essence of this treatment is to shut down blood flow in major arteries of the thyroid by direc

Autoimmune thyroid diseases.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Interesting clinical and basic studies have been published in the field of autoimmune thyroiditis (represented by Graves' disease and Hashimoto's thyroiditis) since January 2005. The review is organized into four main areas: genetics, environment, adaptive immune system, and innate immune system. RECENT FINDINGS: The quest continues for the identification of susceptibility genes for autoimmune thyroiditis. In addition to the classical major histocompatibility complex class II genes and cytotoxic T cell antigen-4, new studies have appeared on CD40 the protein tyrosine phosph

[Inflammatory thyroid diseases].

Thyroiditis are common causes of the goitrous enlargement of the thyroid, and comprise a number of inhomogeneous disorders. The only criterion they have in common is an inflammatory infiltration of thyroid tissue. The following diseases belong to this group: Hashimoto's thyroiditis, thyroiditis de Quervain, acute thyroiditis, Riedel's thyroiditis and rare forms of thyroiditis. These diseases are reviewed with regard to incidence, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis and treatment.

Autoimmune Thyroid Diseases.

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) include a wide spectrum of thyroid diseases affecting more commonly women than men. The most frequent forms are Graves' Disease (GD) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis / Autoimmune Thyroiditis (AIT), but there are also other immunogenic destructive forms of thyroiditis, that is, silent and postpartum thyroiditis. In the last decade, AITDs and other inflammatory thyroid diseases related to anti-tumor molecular drugs are more frequently seen due to the widespread use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICPIs). Autoimmune thyroiditis

Modified Miccoli's thyroid surgery for thyroid diseases.

Minimally invasive video-assisted thyroidectomy (MIVAT), originally described by Miccoli, is considered to be the most widely practiced and easily reproducible procedure for selected patients with benign and/or malignant thyroid nodules. Modified techniques based on MIVAT, namely modified Miccoli's thyroid surgery (MMTS), were developed based on MIVAT. This study aimed to evaluate the preliminary results of MMTS compared with those of MIVAT. The enrolling criteria included a benign nodule <3.5 cm in diameter, a malignant tumor <2 cm, no previous neck surgery and no evidence of any suspected ly

Homocysteine and thyroid diseases.

Homocysteine (Hcy) is an important intermediate product in methionine metabolism which plays a key role in the methylation of DNA, RNA and proteins. High level of Hcy can induce endothelial cell damage, promote the release of inflammatory factors, stimulate oxidative stress and inhibit the fibrinolytic system. Numerous studies have confirmed the close relationship between hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) and the occurrence/development of various diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, thrombotic diseases, and tumors. With the rising incidence of thyroid diseases, the relat

Thyroid and cardiovascular diseases.

The thyroid gland is one of the major regulator organs of hemostasis in the human body, controlling the functioning of numerous systems. Thyroid hormones exert a modulating effect on the cardiovascular system in particular, ensuring optimal functioning within the normal range. Triiodothyronine (T3), as an active form of thyroid hormone, is mainly responsible for this effect via both genomic and nongenomic mechanisms. It has been reported that overt thyroid disorders are associated with a number of cardiovascular diseases and cardiac mortality. While hyperthyroidism appears to be related to atr

Selenium and thyroid diseases.

Selenium, a non-metallic element, is a micronutrient essential for the biosynthesis of selenoproteins containing selenocysteine. In adults, the thyroid contains the highest amount of selenium per gram of tissue. Most known selenoproteins, such as glutathione peroxidase, are expressed in the thyroid and are involved in thyroid hormone metabolism, redox state regulation, and maintenance of cellular homeostasis. Some clinical studies have shown that lack of selenium will increase the prevalence of several kinds of thyroid diseases. Selenium treatment in patients with Graves' orbitopathy has been

Thyroid diseases in elderly.

Thyroid diseases are the commonest endocrine disorders in the general population. In most of the cases, they are consistent with benign conditions which may be asymptomatic or affect people at a variable extent. Since they often represent chronic conditions their prevalence increases by age and reaches in elderly the highest rates. Thyroid nodules are a common clinical finding. Most subjects with thyroid nodules have few or no symptoms. Thyroid nodules are more commonly non-functioning. However, in elderly, toxic multinodular goiter is the most frequent cause of spontaneous hyperthyroidism and

Thyroid diseases in pregnancy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Thyroid disorders are common in pregnancy and affect maternal and fetal outcome. RECENT FINDINGS: The reference values for normal thyroid function during first and second trimester had been re-evaluated recently. Hypothyroxinemia affects the neuropsychological development of the child. Maternal thyroid dysfunction or only the presence of thyroid-specific antibodies is associated with increased risk for early abortion, preterm delivery and neonatal morbidity. Pregnant women under levothyroxine treatment are often undertreated or overtreated. Screening for thyroid dysfunction

Arthropathies and thyroid diseases.

AIM: Improvement of articular symptoms following thyroidectomy has often been observed in patients with an association of thyroid and joint diseases. An assessment has therefore been made of the types of arthropathy thus benefited and the anatomopathological features of the thyroid in patients with concomitant joint diseases. An account is given of the arthropathies associated with nontoxic nodular goitre (NTG). METHODS: Three cell markers are examined to identify immunocytokine elements differentiating thyroid diseases. RESULTS: Immunohistochemical examination shows extravasal lymphocyte in

Thyroid diseases in pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION: Changes in thyroid function in pregnancy encompass both hyper- and hypothyroidism. Failure to maintain euthyroidism may place both mother and foetus at higher risk of adverse obstetrical outcomes. This review examines the differences between physiological and pathological thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy and their management. METHODS: Data were obtained from relevant clinical studies and review articles listed in MEDLINE. Additional cross-references from selected articles were identified. RESULTS: In hyperthyroidism, the challenge lies in differentiating gestational transie
