[Thyroid nodule].

The thyroid nodule is a frequent, most often benign, chronic, multifocal and slowly progressive disease. The first line strategy is to diagnose cancerous nodules (<5%) and relies upon fine needle aspiration (FNA), a specialised technique which in trained hands has a false negative rate of below 5%. The interest to explore small thyroid nodules is controversial since the prognosis of thyroid cancer is excellent for lesions measuring less than 20 mm. Though imaging accuracy is quite limited in assessing the diagnosis of thyroid cancer, both ultrasounds (US) and thyroid scan are helpful to enhanc

Thyroid lymphoepithelial nodule.

Thyroid benign lymphoepithelial lesions are rare in adults, reported as associated with thyroiditis or adjacent to tumours. Here we report a unique case of a thyroid solid nodule with benign lymphoepithelial morphology. A 56-year-old woman presented with a thyroid nodule increasing in size. Thyroid function was normal. On the surgical resection specimen, in addition to a 2-cm follicular adenoma, there was, at distance, a 0.5-cm solid nodule with lymphoepithelial morphology, without Hassal's corpuscles or calcifications. On immunohistochemistry, the epithelial component was cytokeratin 5/6 posi

The incidental thyroid nodule.

Incidental thyroid nodules that are found on an imaging study performed for reasons other than thyroid pathology represent a common scenario encountered by health care providers. The initial workup for these nodules comprises a thorough history and physical examination, thyroid function tests, a dedicated thyroid ultrasound, and fine-needle aspiration of any suspicious lesions. Management ranges from observation and reassurance to surgical resection and depends on the cytologic diagnosis. In cases of cytologically indeterminate or discordant nodules, surgical excision (lobectomy) offers a defi

[Management of thyroid nodule].

Thyroid nodules are often encountered in clinical practice. Although the vast majority are benign lesions, about 5% may actually be cancerous. The main problem raised by a solitary nodule of the thyroid gland is therefore the diagnosis of neoplasia. Several diagnostic techniques have been proposed to distinguish benign nodules from malignant nodules. These techniques vary in reliability. History taking, physical examination, laboratory studies and diagnostic imaging may help the physician to categorise the nodule but only fine-needle aspiration biopsy provide sensitive and specific results in

[The hyperfunctional thyroid nodule].

Authors report their experience of 22 years regarding 284 patients with hyperfunctional thyroidal nodules (279 operated), representing 12.4% of the 2,289 cases of thyroidal (875 hyperthyroid) diseases treated during this period. The diagnosis was established on the basis of the confrontation of the anamnestic symptomatology and of that found at the clinical examination--which confirmed the pure character of thyrotoxicosis by showing the presence of a thyroidal nodule--with the study of the global glandular function and the scintigram, completed with dynamic tests. Among the typical clinical an

Radiomics in thyroid nodule assessment.

This narrative review was conducted by searching PubMed and Google Scholar using keywords such as 'radiomics' AND 'thyroid nodules' from March 2019 to March 2024. Inclusion criteria focused on peer-reviewed studies in English on radiomics applications; 50 studies were ultimately evaluated after excluding non-relevant works. The purpose of this article is to systematize the utilization of radiomics in assessing thyroid nodules, aiming to furnish valuable theoretical insights. As an emerging interdisciplinary domain, radiomics integrates medical imaging with computer data analysis techniques, th

[Molecular diagnostics of thyroid nodule].

Nodular goiter is a very frequent occurrence that rarely requires surgical treatments. Only a few of these nodules are the site of carcinoma which requires surgery. It is therefore necessary to precisely determine the nature of the nodule. The cytological examination of the biopsy performed with a fine needle is the most accurate diagnostic method for determining the benign or malignant nature of a thyroid nodule. However, in approximately 15% of cases the cytology is indeterminate. In these cases, it is possible to apply the knowledge of molecular biology to refine the diagnosis. Mutations of

Microfilaria in thyroid gland nodule.

Presence of microfilaria in the thyroid gland is a rare finding. Filariasis is a common public health problem in the Indian sub-continent. Most of the cases of microfilaria in thyroid gland reported in the literature are associated with goiter and thyroid neoplasms. Here, we present a rare case that showed microfilaria on fine needle aspiration cytology of solitary thyroid nodule.

Evaluation of the thyroid nodule.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are common, yet treatment modalities range from observation to surgical resection. Because thyroid nodules are frequently found incidentally during routine physical examination or imaging performed for another reason, physicians from a diverse range of specialties encounter thyroid nodules. Clinical decision making depends on proper evaluation of the thyroid nodule. METHODS: The current literature was reviewed and synthesized. RESULTS: Current evidence allows the formulation of recommendations and a general algorithm for evaluating the incidental thyroid nodule.

[Thyroid nodule, cancer and pregnancy].

Pregnancy is a favorable condition for thyroid nodule formation and growth since iodine balance may be negative in addition to increasing production of hormones with thyroid stimulatory activity. Thyroid nodules may be discovered in pregnant women on routine examination: what is the risk for a nodule to be malignant, how should it be investigated? In case thyroid cancer is suspected, is there an impact of pregnancy on the tumor outcome and what treatments are available? Infrequently, diagnoses of toxic autonomous nodules or medullary carcinomas may be supported by elevated serum calcitonin or

[Thyroid nodule. Differential diagnostic guidelines].

Nodules in the thyroid are common. They may represent hyperplastic or adenomatous nodules, true adenomas or malignant neoplasms. The main task of the pathologist consists of the exclusion or demonstration of malignancy. This can be done preoperatively by fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology, intraoperatively by frozen section diagnosis, and postoperatively by investigation of paraffin sections. The intention of this paper is to formulate guidelines for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of thyroid nodules. The evaluation of thyroid nodules still depends on routine cytological or histolo

Evaluation of the thyroid nodule.

Evaluation of thyroid nodules challenges the most astute clinician. The history and the physical examination often identify those patients who require immediate surgical management. In other patients, time-honored thyroid function studies and thyroid scanning are helpful. Fine needle aspiration and computed tomography are also valuable in the diagnostic work-up.

Mixed laryngocele mimicking thyroid nodule.

Laryngocele is defined as a dilation of the laryngeal saccule forming an air sac. Some differential diagnoses for laryngocele have been reported. The aim of the present paper was to describe a case of a patient referred for the evaluation a suspected thyroid nodule that was subsequently diagnosed as a mixed laryngocele. A 31-year-old male with no clinical manifestations was referred by an endocrinologist to undergo Doppler ultrasonography and fine-needle aspiration biopsy due to a preliminary ultrasonographic diagnosis of a nodule apparently in the thyroid. The diagnosis of laryngocele was rai

Malignancy in Solitary Thyroid Nodule.

This prospective study was done to find out the relative frequency of the malignancy in cold solitary thyroid nodules with other solitary thyroid nodules (hot and warm). This study was carried out in the Department of General Surgery and Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), Dhaka, Bangladesh from January 2011 to February 2012. One hundred (100) patients with clinically and ultrasonographically diagnosed as solitary thyroid nodules were included. Out of them, 52% of patients were in the third and fourth decades of life and 26% were in the seco

Evaluation of a thyroid nodule.

The thyroid specialist frequently evaluates thyroid nodules because they may represent malignancy. Nodules are typically found on physical examination or incidentally when other imaging studies are performed. Malignant or symptomatic nodules that compress nearby structures warrant surgical excision. Yet, the majority of thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and benign, so the thyroid surgeon must rely on diagnostic studies to determine when surgery is indicated. Ultrasound is the preferred imaging modality for thyroid nodules, and the ultrasound guided fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) is the pr

Thyroid nodules.

Palpable thyroid nodules occur in 4 to 7 percent of the population, but nodules found incidentally on ultrasonography suggest a prevalence of 19 to 67 percent. The majority of thyroid nodules are asymptomatic. Because about 5 percent of all palpable nodules are found to be malignant, the main objective of evaluating thyroid nodules is to exclude malignancy. Laboratory evaluation, including a thyroid-stimulating hormone test, can help differentiate a thyrotoxic nodule from an euthyroid nodule. In euthyroid patients with a nodule, fine-needle aspiration should be performed, and radionuclide scan

Distinguishing mummified thyroid nodules from malignant thyroid nodules.

AIM: To study the ultrasonographic (US) differences between "mummified" thyroid nodules and malignant thyroid nodules in order to achieve a more accurate imaging-based diagnosis and to avoid unnecessary biopsy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the US features of mummified thyroid nodules, as confirmed by fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC), in 193 cases. The US features included content, echo, shape, margin, microcalcification, suspicious lymph nodes and some characteristic features, including the cystic wall shrinkage sign, the concentric configuration or finger sign, cal

Unusual Thyroid Nodule: A Case of Symptomatic Thyroid Schwannoma.

Primary thyroid schwannoma is a sporadic non-epithelial tumor of the thyroid gland. Most previous cases reported in the literature presented it as an asymptomatic neck mass. In this report, we describe a rare case of thyroid schwannoma in a 33-year-old female, presented as a left-side neck swelling, accompanied by a change in voice and difficulty swallowing. An ultrasound of the mass showed a large heterogeneous, predominantly cystic, nodule; in contrast to the usual predominantly solid nodule described in the literature. After several pre-operative diagnostic tests, including fine needle aspi

Management of the solitary thyroid nodule.

Thyroid nodules are common, with up to 8% of the adult population having palpable nodules. With the use of ultrasound, up to 10 times more nodules are likely to be detected. Increasing numbers of nodules are being detected serendipitously because of the rising use of imaging to investigate unrelated conditions. The primary aim in investigating a thyroid nodule is to exclude the possibility of malignancy, which occurs in about 5% of nodules. This begins with a thorough history, including previous exposure to radiation and any family history of thyroid cancer or other endocrine diseases. Clinica
