A new Solothrips species from Southwestern China (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Solothrips lanceolatus sp. nov. is described from Southwestern China. This is the second species of Solothrips, a genus remarkable within Thripinae for the absence of ocellar setae I and II, head, thorax and fore wings with setae short and flattened. The body coloration of this new species is dark brown, in contrast to the sharply bicolored type species. S. lanceolatus is currently known from the leaves of Lithocarpus grandifolius in tropic areas. The male is described for the first time within the genus.

Ovary Organization and a Putative Germ Plasm in Tubuliferan and Terebrantian Thrips (Thysanoptera).

Comparison of the detailed morphology of ovaries allows for an evolutionary conclusion in insects. The current study characterized the ovary/ovariole organization in both thysanopteran subtaxa (Terebrantia and Tubulifera) and confirmed the presence of a (putative) germ plasm in the oocytes. Using transmission and scanning electron microscopy as well as histological methods, we show that the morphology of ovaries in the studied terebrantians and tubuliferans differs in the organization of the anterior ovary/ovariole region, that is, the germaria and terminal filaments. Whereas in tubuliferan, H

Fitness Trade-Off Associated With Spinosad Resistance in Frankliniella occidentalis (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande) is an economically important pest of agricultural crops. High resistance has been detected in field populations of F. occidentalis against the insecticide spinosad. In this study, we compared life history traits, body sizes, and feeding behaviors (recorded via an electrical penetration graph) of spinosad-susceptible (Ivf03) and spinosad-resistant (NIL-R) near-isogenic lines of F. occidentalis. Life table analysis showed that NIL-R had reduced female longevity and reduced fecundity. The relative fitness of NIL-R (0.43) was less than half that of Ivf03. NIL-

Species confusion in the Australian inflorescence-living genus Pseudanaphothrips (Thysanoptera, Thripidae).

An attempt is made to resolve the confused identity of species in the Australian endemic genus, Pseudanaphothrips, with an illustrated key provided to the eight species recognised here. One species, P. querci, was based on a single female from Taiwan and is here recorded from Australia for the first time, and P. achaetus is now found widely from New Zealand to Pacific islands and California. A new generic diagnosis is provided, emphasising the close relationship to Frankliniella, and Isochaetothrips pallidusSteele is considered a new synonym of Pseudanaphothrips frankstoni (Steele). Wolbachia-mediated parthenogenesis in the predatory thrips Franklinothrips vespiformis (Thysanoptera: Insecta).

Wolbachia are bacterial endosymbionts in arthropods and filarial nematodes. They cause thelytoky, which is a form of parthenogenesis in which females produce females without males, in hymenopteran insects. Infection of this parthenogenesis-inducing Wolbachia has been restricted to the order Hymenoptera, but was found in another insect order, Thysanoptera. A parthenogenetic colony of a predatory thrips Franklinothrips vespiformis (Aeolothripidae) possessed B-group Wolbachia. Male progeny were produced from this thrips by heat and tetracycline treatments. Males produced motile sperm, which were

Comparison of Bioassays Used to Determine Onion Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) Susceptibility to Spinetoram.

Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci Lindeman) is one of onion's most damaging insect pests and has a history of developing resistance across insecticide classes. The susceptibility of T. tabaci populations to insecticides can be determined using laboratory bioassays. Three types of bioassays have been documented in the literature specifically for use with T. tabaci: vial assay (contact only), feeding assay (ingestion only), and leaf-dip assay (contact + ingestion). The objectives of this study were to 1) compare insecticide susceptibility levels of a T. tabaci population using these three assays and 2

Ultrastructure and optical features of compound eyes in Odontothrips loti (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Thrips (Thysanoptera) are minute insects of ecological and economic importance, yet their visual systems remain poorly documented. Here, we present a comprehensive morphological and optical analysis of the compound eyes of Odontothrips loti, an important alfalfa pest, using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The compound eyes of adult O. loti conform to the apposition type and contain 56-63 ommatidia per eye. Sexual dimorphism is evident, with females exhibiting larger facets than males. Each ommatidium comprises a cornea, a eucone-type crystalline cone, seven retinula cells, two p

Development of the mouthparts in embryos of Haplothrips verbasci (Osborn) (Insecta, Thysanoptera, Phlaeothripidae).

The asymmetric "punch and suck" mouthparts of larval Haplothrips verbasci develop from paired appendages in the late, post-anatrepsis embryo similar to those of other insects. Later, the labrum flexes ventrally over the stomodaeum, the right mandibular appendage degenerates, the maxillary appendages divide into inner (lacinial) and outer (stipital) lobes, and the hypopharynx arises from the venters of the mandibular and maxillary segments. All cephalic segments consolidate anteriorly prior to katatrepsis, their appendages flex ventrally, and the labial appendages fuse medially to form the labi

Detecting Thrips parvispinus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in retail plant stores in Southern California.

Thrips parvispinus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae: Karny) is an invasive pest that harms peppers and ornamentals. It has not been reported as present in Southern California but has a history of establishing in regions prior to official detection. We surveyed retail garden stores in San Diego and Orange Counties to determine if T. parvispinus was present in California but undetected, and found it on Capsicum, Dipladenia, Mandevilla, and Gardenia species across a year-long period. Our work demonstrates that T. parvispinus can spread to new areas undetected on nursery stock and validates sampling retai

Chromosome-level genome assembly of bean flower thrips Megalurothrips usitatus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae).

Bean flower thrips Megalurothrips usitatus is a staple pest of cowpea and other legumes and causes dramatic economic losses. Its small size allows for easy concealment, and large reproductive capacity easily leads to infestations. Despite the importance of a genome in developing novel management strategies, genetic studies on M. usitatus remain limited. Thus, we generated a chromosome-level M. usitatus genome using a combination of PacBio long read and Hi-C technologies. The assembled genome was 238.14 Mb with a scaffold N50 of 13.85 Mb. The final genome was anchored into 16 pseudo-chromosomes

Simultaneous identification of multiple thrips species (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) from sticky traps using DNA metabarcoding.

More than 130 thrips (Insecta, Thysanoptera) species are significant pests of agricultural crops, 16 of which are known vectors of economically important plant viruses from the Orthotospovirus genus (Bunyavirales: Tospoviridae). It is important to monitor and identify which thrips species are present in production systems so that appropriate controls can be deployed to prevent and manage thrips damage and virus spread. To overcome the challenges of traditional thrips monitoring using sticky traps and morphological identification, a DNA metabarcoding assay was developed, for accurate, high-thro

Far from home: a new grass-feeding Chirothrips (Thysanoptera, Thripidae) from South Brazil.

Chirothrips (Thripidae) includes 44 species, all presumably associated with florets of Poaceae. Most species were described from the Old World, although a few are also known from the Nearctic region. In this study, a new species from the grasslands of southern Brazil, but likely of African origin, is described. Chirothrips longiventralissp. nov. is characterized by antennal segment II symmetrical and not laterally projected, simple sense cones on antennal segments III-IV, and a slender and acuminate abdomen.

Geostatistical Assessment of Frankliniella schultzei (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) Spatial Distribution in Commercial Watermelon Crops.

Spatial distribution studies of insect pests make it possible to determine their colonization and dispersal patterns. Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. et Nakai) is among the most frequently consumed fruits in the world, and the common blossom thrips, Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), is one of the most important insect pests of this plant. The objective of this study was to determine the spatial distribution of F. schultzei in commercial watermelon crops using geostatistics. The studied F. schultzei populations presented an aggregated distribution. The c

Monitoring Onion Thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) Susceptibility to Spinetoram in New York Onion Fields.

Onion thrips (Thrips tabaci Lindeman) is a severe pest of onion (Allium cepa L.). Their management relies on frequent applications of foliar insecticides, including spinetoram (Radiant® SC), which has a novel mode of action and is effective at controlling large populations. However, despite being widely used for the past 10 yr, susceptibility to spinetoram has not been evaluated formally in New York state, where nearly 3,000 hectares of onion are planted annually. Over 2 yr (2017-2018), the susceptibility of onion thrips to spinetoram was assessed from populations collected in commercial onion

Assessing abundance and distribution of an invasive thrips Frankliniella schultzei (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in south Florida.

Within-plant and within-field distribution of larvae and adults of an invasive thrips species, Frankliniella schultzei (Trybom) on cucumber, Cucumis sativus L. was studied in 2008 and 2009 in Homestead, Florida. The majority of thrips were found inhabiting flowers of cucumber plants and little or none was found on the other parts of the plant. Thrips were aggregated in the field, as indicated by the two regression models, Taylor's power and Iwao's patchiness regression. Iwao's patchiness regression provided a better fit than Taylor's power law. The distribution was clumped during the initial s

Delayed spinetoram application is useful in managing Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) in Florida strawberry.

Scirtothrips dorsalis Hood (Thysanoptera: Thripidae) is an invasive, early-season pest of strawberry in Florida, causing feeding injury to young foliage that results in stunted plant growth and yield loss. Spinetoram, an effective insecticide for thrips pests with up to 3 applications per season permitted in strawberry, is often applied repeatedly during the early-season (Oct-Nov) to manage S. dorsalis, leaving few or no applications for flower thrips pests later in the season (Dec-Mar). Therefore, new strategies are needed to manage S. dorsalis with less insecticide, with the hypothesis that
