TIDAL WAVES: Network mechanisms in the neuroendocrine control of prolactin release.

Neuroendocrine tuberoinfundibular dopamine (TIDA) neurons tonically inhibit pituitary release of the hormone, prolactin. Through the powerful actions of prolactin in promoting lactation and maternal behaviour while suppressing sexual drive and fertility, TIDA neurons play a key role in reproduction. We summarize insights from recent in vitro studies into the membrane properties and network behaviour of TIDA neurons including the observations that TIDA neurons exhibit a robust oscillation that is synchronized between cells and depends on intact gap junction communication. Comparisons are made w

Analysis of End-Tidal CO2 Variability During Plateau Waves Episodes: An Information Theoretic Approach.

Plateau waves (PWs), commonly observed in traumatic brain injury (TBI), are abrupt increases in intracranial pressure (ICP) above 40 mmHg, often reducing cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and impairing cerebral blood flow. Monitoring and managing these fluctuations is critical to improve patients outcome. The partial pressure of carbon dioxide in arterial blood (PaCO2), measures the amount of CO2 dissolved in the blood and reflects the balance between CO2 production and elimination through respiration. It plays a critical role in regulating cerebral vasoreactivity and intracranial pressure. Mo

Prescription opioid use in Israel - the tide has risen, but it's not a tidal wave.

The devastating human and financial costs of the ongoing global opioid crisis underscore the need for comprehensive public health strategies, effective treatment programs, and robust policy interventions to mitigate its impact. Regarding Israel, numerous reports highlight a steady increase since 2000 in prescription opioid use and the shift to more potent opioids particularly fentanyl, particularly among more marginalized population groups. In response to growing concern in the country about the rise in prescription opioid use and the consequential risk of opioid use disorder, the Israeli gove

Correlation between pulse-wave cerebral tissue oxygen saturation and end-tidal carbon dioxide during cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

INTRODUCTION: There is mounting evidence showing that physiological monitoring of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) quality is important for achieving high-quality CPR. Cerebral tissue oxygen saturation and end-tidal carbon dioxide (ETCO2) are expected to become useful indicators for CPR quality. To reveal whether pulse-wave cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SnO2) could be used as an indicator of CPR quality, we investigated the correlation between SnO2 and ETCO2 during CPR. METHODS: We performed this retrospective observational study to investigate the correlation between cerebral tissue

When Tides Run Dry: Exploring an Overlooked Coastal Disturbance and Its Climate Connections.

Weakening polar temperature gradients are associated with increasingly persistent weather patterns, increasing the risk of extreme environmental events. While disturbances, such as marine heat waves, have received growing attention, others, including negative sea level anomalies, remain understudied. Prolonged and extreme low-water conditions can impose strong physiological stress on coastal organisms and alter community structure, yet such events lack a consistent operational definition, limiting their detection and assessment. Here, we define and quantify extreme negative sea level anomalies

Life in the margins: the effect of immersion/emersion and tidal cycle on the North Atlantic limpet Patella vulgata protein synthesis rates.

Biological processes in intertidal species follow tidal rhythms that enhance survival and fitness. Whereas tidal effects on behaviour and metabolic rates have been widely studied, impacts on other key process such as protein synthesis are still poorly understood. To date, no studies have examined the effect of immersion/emersion and tidal cycles on protein synthesis rates (ks). Patella vulgata is an intertidal limpet present in North-Eastern Atlantic rocky shores from high to low shore. Previously reported P. vulgata respiration and heart rate measurements suggest aerobic metabolism is maintai

Analysing how plants in coastal wetlands respond to varying tidal regimes throughout their life cycles.

Important to conserve plant species in coastal wetlands throughout their life cycle. All life stages in these habitats are exposed to varying tidal cycles. It is necessary to investigate all life stages as to how they respond to varying tidal regimes. We examine three wetlands containing populations of an endangered halophyte species, each subjected to different tidal regimes: (1). wetlands completely closed to tidal cycles; (2). wetlands directly exposed to tidal cycles (3). wetlands exposed to a partially closed tidal regime. Our results showed that the most threatened stage varied between w

Wind and rain compound with tides to cause frequent and unexpected coastal floods.

With sea-level rise, flooding in coastal communities is now common during the highest high tides. Floods also occur at normal tidal levels when rainfall overcomes stormwater infrastructure that is partially submerged by tides. Data describing this type of compound flooding is scarce and, therefore, it is unclear how often these floods occur and the extent to which non-tidal factors contribute to flooding. We combine measurements of flooding on roads and within storm drains with a numerical model to examine processes that contribute to flooding in Carolina Beach, NC, USA - a community that chro

Electroretinogram as a possible monitor of anesthetic depth.

The effects of volatile anesthetics, i.e., methoxyflurane, halothane and enflurane, on the electroretinogram (ERG) were studied in 15 albino rabbits. The ERG was analyzed in terms of the a-wave, and the first oscillatory component (01) in the b-wave. The 01 peak latency showed a significant dose-related prolongation when anesthetic end-tidal concentrations were in excess of 0.8 minimum alveolar concentration (MAC). One MAC, a measure of anesthetic potency, is the end-tidal concentration of an anesthetic at 1 atmosphere that induces immobility in 50% of animals against a noxious stimulus. The a

[Use of high frequency jet ventilation in extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy].

High frequency jet ventilation (HFJV) was used in 68 patients which were treated with extracorporal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) because of stone diseases in the upper urinary tract. The question was whether HFJV in combination with a semiclosed conventional circle system offered a practicable and safe technique to minimize the oscillations which are proportional to the applied tidal volume and to the diaphragmatic movements. With IPPV the mean distance of the stone movement was 32 mm, whereas with the application of HFJV the stones oscillated around their resting position within limits of 2

QRS-activated ventilation during general anesthesia for extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy.

High frequency ventilation has been claimed to improve the efficiency of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) by minimizing the movement of urinary stones during the procedure. A ventilatory mode, QRS-activated ventilation, was developed in which the stones remain motionless during the delivery of shock waves. As the shock wave is triggered to occur approximately 20 milliseconds after the R wave of the QRS complex, the mechanical breath was synchronized to occur approximately 150 ms later. QRS-activated ventilation is used in 16 patients undergoing ESWL under general anesthesia. Tidal

Oviposition strategies of temporary pool mosquitoes in relation to weather, tidal regime and land use in a temperate wetland.

Wetlands have traditionally been associated with harbouring mosquitoes, a well-known nuisance and vectors of diseases. Within mosquito life cycle, oviposition is a determinant event by shaping their individual fitness and vectorial capacity. The study was conducted in one of the main temperate wetlands in South America. We used Generalized Linear Models to study the relation between temperature, precipitation, tidal regime, land use, microenvironment, and the occurrence of floodwater (Ochlerotatus and Psorophora spp.) and raft-laying (Culex and Uranotaenia spp.) mosquitoes using temporary pool

Influence of semidiurnal tidal dynamics on the multi-characteristic potential ecological risk of microplastics in the Bang Pakong River Estuary, Thailand.

This study assesses the influence of tidal fluctuations on microplastic (MP) dynamics in the Bang Pakong River Estuary, a major source of runoff pollution on the eastern coast of the Inner Gulf of Thailand. Sampling was conducted across 16 tidal phases over two complete 48-hour semidiurnal spring-tide cycles. A grab sampling approach was employed using stainless-steel buckets for surface water (0-1 m), while the remaining water column was sampled using Van Dorn samplers. MP concentrations ranged from 1.10 to 15.32 particles/L (mean: 6.05 ± 3.48 particles/L), values notably higher than those re

Improving coastal water level estimation by merging nadir-only satellite altimetry data into a hydrodynamic model.

Providing robust real-time flood warnings is of paramount importance to coastal communities. Although state-of-the-art hydrodynamic models are capable of robustly predicting coastal water levels (CWL), unresolved drivers affecting water level fluctuations are often not represented by the model governing equations. This work evaluates a novel method to improve the performance of the ADvanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) hydrodynamic model by assimilating observations from four nadir-only satellite altimetry missions with a set of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) gauge stations loc

Environmental assessment of tide-driven spatiotemporal dynamics of fecal coliform as a microbial hazard along Canada's coasts.

Fecal coliforms (FC), as indicators of pathogenic microbial hazards, represent an important environmental contaminant posing significant risks to coastal water quality, public health, and shellfish safety along Canada's diverse shorelines. Tidal dynamics are a major driver of short-term variability in fecal indicator bacteria, yet their quantitative impacts remain poorly characterized across Canada's contrasting coastal regimes. This study addresses this gap using more than 10 years of national monitoring data to quantify tidal and rainfall effects on FC concentrations along Canada's west (Pac

Influence of tide levels and community composition on soil carbon sequestration in mangrove largest wetland Leizhou Peninsula, China.

Mangroves play a vital role in mitigating atmospheric carbon dioxide by storing substantial quantity of carbon in their soils. Unlike terrestrial forests where most carbon is stored in living trees, mangroves store approximately 70–90% of their carbon in the soil. Mangrove soil carbon dynamics and their driving factors have been extensively studied globally, there remains a significant lack of region-specific data, particularly in southern China. To address this gap, we conducted a field investigation across six mangrove wetland sites in China’s largest reserve, located on the Leizhou Peninsul

Behavioral Control of Swash-Riding in the Clam Donax variabilis.

Clams of the species Donax variabilis migrate shoreward during rising tides and seaward during falling tides. These clams spend most of the time in the sand, emerging several times per tidal cycle to ride waves. Migration is not merely a passive result of waves eroding clams out of the sand; rather clams actively jump out of the sand and ride specific waves. Such active migration is experimentally demonstrated during a falling tide by comparing the motion of dead and live clams; live clams emerge from the sand and move seaward even when dead ones do not. As low tide approaches, live clams beco

Breaking Boundaries: Extending the Orbit-Averaged Fokker-Planck Equation Inside the Loss Cone.

In this Letter, we present a new formulation of loss cone theory as a reaction-diffusion system, which accounts for loss cone events through a sink term and can be orbit averaged. It can recover the standard approach based on boundary conditions, and is derived from a simple physical model that overcomes many of the classical theoretical constraints. We test our formulation by computing the relaxed distribution of disruptive orbits in phase space, which has a simple analytic form and agrees with the pericenter of tidal disruption events at disruption predicted by nonaveraged models. This formu

Recommendations for the development of erosion-resistant tidal marshes to enhance nature-based flood risk mitigation.

There is growing interest in nature-based hybrid flood risk mitigation, in which wetland ecosystems, such as tidal marshes, are an integral part. Tidal marshes can attenuate wave loading on defense structures, reduce breach depth in case of defense structure failure, attenuate storm surges, reduce shoreline erosion, and grow vertically with sea-level rise. Marshes are currently being restored and created for flood risk mitigation and/or for other ecosystem services, making it crucial that they can persist in the long term and therefore develop erosion-resistant sediment beds. In this paper, we
