Tillandsia landbeckii phyllosphere and laimosphere as refugia for bacterial life in a hyperarid desert environment.

BACKGROUND: The lack of water is a major constraint for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. Consequently, the abundance and diversity of microorganisms in common habitats such as soil are strongly reduced, and colonization occurs primarily by specifically adapted microorganisms that thrive in particular refugia to escape the harsh conditions that prevail in these deserts. We suggest that plants provide another refugium for microbial life in hyperarid deserts. We studied the bacterial colonization of Tillandsia landbeckii (Bromeliaceae) plants, which occur in the hyperarid regions of the Ataca

Endophyte-assisted non-host plant Tillandsia brachycaulos enhance indoor formaldehyde removal.

This study investigated the use of endophyte-assisted Tillandsia brachycaulos to enhance formaldehyde removal in indoor environments. A formaldehyde-degrading endophyte from the root of Epipremnum aureum, Pseudomonas plecoglossicida, was identified and used for inoculation. Among the inoculation methods, spraying proved to be the most effective, resulting in a significant 35 % increase in formaldehyde removal after 36 hours. The results of the light exposure experiment (3000 Lux) demonstrate that an increase in light intensity reduces the efficiency of the Tillandsia brachycaulos-microbial sys

Isolation and Identification of Flavones Responsible for the Antibacterial Activities of Tillandsia bergeri Extracts.

Plants are an everlasting inspiration source of biologically active compounds. Among these medicinal plants, the biological activity of extracts from some species of the Tillandsia genus has been studied, but the phytochemistry of the hardy species Tillandsia bergeri remains unknown. The aim of the present study was to perform the first phytochemical study of T. bergeri and to identify the compounds responsible for the antibacterial activity of T. bergeri extracts. Soxhlet extraction of predried and grinded leaves was first performed using four increasing polarity solvents. A bio-guided fracti

Impact of airborne iron oxide nanoparticles on Tillandsia usneoides as a model plant to assess pollution in heavy traffic areas.

Due to the increasing evidence of widespread sub-micron pollutants in the atmosphere, the impact of airborne nanoparticles is a subject of great relevance. In particular, the smallest particles are considered the most active and dangerous, having a higher surface/volume ratio. Here we tested the effect of iron oxide (Fe3O4) nanoparticles (IONPs) with different mean diameter and size distribution on the model plant Tillandsia usneoides. Strands were placed in home-built closed boxes and exposed to levels of airborne IONPs reported for the roadside air, i.e. in the order of 107 - 108 items m-2.

The different routes of parallel evolution in epiarenic growth in a hyperarid desert environment.

The Atacama Desert, one of the driest and oldest regions on Earth, represents an extreme environment that has driven remarkable adaptive evolution over millions of years. Within this setting, the genus Tillandsia comprises specialists capable of surviving at the dry limit of plant life. These species exhibit crassulacean acid metabolism (CAM), lack functional roots, and possess trichomes adapted for water and nutrient absorption. Of the more c. 750 known Tillandsia species, nine occur in the Chilean-Peruvian Atacama Desert, where they colonize bare sand surfaces (epiarenic growth) under hypera

Antiviral evaluation of plants from Brazilian Atlantic Tropical Forest.

The antiviral activity of six medicinal plants from Brazilian Atlantic Tropical Forest was investigated against two viruses: herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and poliovirus type 2 (PV-2). Cuphea carthagenensis and Tillandsia usneoides extracts showed the best antiherpes activity. T. usneoides dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol extracts, and Lippia alba n-butanol extract showed inhibition of HSV-1, strain 29R/acyclovir resistant. In addition, only L. alba ethyl acetate extract showed antipoliovirus activity. These results corroborate that medicinal plants can be a rich source of po

Bioinspired Polyvinyl Alcohol-Based Foam Fabricated via Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Foaming for Atmospheric Water Harvesting.

The intensifying freshwater crisis underscores the critical need for all-weather, low-energy atmospheric water harvesting technologies. Inspired by the scale-like protrusions and interconnected channels of Tillandsia leaves that enable efficient water capture and release, a polyvinyl alcohol-based foam featuring a three-dimensional porous structure is fabricated using the supercritical carbon dioxide foaming technology. Compared to the traditional freeze-drying method, this approach significantly reduces preparation energy consumption and shortens the production cycle. Lithium chloride integra

Monitoring airborne fine particles with biological and technological sensors for preventive conservation of cultural heritage sites.

Ambient particulate pollution in cities may lead to poor indoor air quality in cultural heritage (CH) institutions if preventive actions are not considered and implemented accordingly. This is one of the first studies to propose using technological and biological sensors to monitor both outdoor and indoor environments at CH sites. We studied particulate matter (PM) concentrations in real time using low-cost sensors in three Mexican museums and an archeological zone, where median PM2.5 concentrations exceed the 24-h Air Quality Guidelines level. Leveraging the biological sensor's ability (Tilla

Accelerate Mass Transport of Proton and Carbon Sources by Super-Hygroscopic and Porous Nanosheets for Continuous CO2-To-Ethylene Upgrade.

Gas-water/catalyst triple-phase interface and the microenvironment play critical roles in the reaction kinetics and production rate of electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reactions (CO2RR), which steer concerted proton-electron transfer steps. Inspired by Tillandsia leaves, which efficiently capture H2O and CO2 from the air, copper nanosheets with dual-functional channels are we designed: the superhygroscopic network enables capillary condensation, converting H2O(g) into H2O(l) to form H2O channels that ensure a stable supply of protons, while the CO2 channels formed by the microporous st

A review of neococcid scale insects (Hemiptera: Sternorrhyncha: Coccomorpha) based on the morphology of the adult males.

The importance of adult male morphology in elucidating the phylogeny of scale insects (Coccomorpha) was first suggested by Balachowsky and Ferris in the late 1930s. However, the first extensive comparisons of adult male morphology were made by Jancke (1955) and Theron (1958), both of whom looked at the morphology of various groups of Coccomorpha. Theron's study, under the guidance of K.L. Boratyński, set a new standard for detail and accuracy (although he did not describe the setae). These studies were closely followed by Beardsley (1962), who described the adult males of 30 mealybug species f

Natural Products as Anticancer Agents: Current Status and Future Perspectives.

Natural products have been an invaluable and useful source of anticancer agents over the years. Several compounds have been synthesized from natural products by modifying their structures or by using naturally occurring compounds as building blocks in the synthesis of these compounds for various purposes in different fields, such as biology, medicine, and engineering. Multiple modern and costly treatments have been applied to combat cancer and limit its lethality, but the results are not significantly refreshing. Natural products, which are a significant source of new therapeutic drugs, are cu
