Deficits of musical timbre perception after unilateral temporal-lobe lesion revealed with multidimensional scaling.

Thirty patients with unilateral temporal lobe excisions and 15 normal control subjects were tested in a task involving judgements of timbre dissimilarity in single tone and melodic conditions. Perceptual correlates of spectral and temporal parameters resulting from changing the number of harmonics and rise-time duration, respectively, were investigated by using a multidimensional scaling technique. The results of subjects with left temporal lobe lesion suggest that they were able to use the spectral and temporal envelopes of tones independently in making perceptual judgements of single tones.

Musical pitch and timbre perception deficits in tinnitus with normal hearing: the role of extended high-frequency sensitivity and spectral-temporal resolution.

In individuals with tinnitus, subtle changes in extended high-frequency (EHF) hearing and suprathreshold auditory processing may contribute to difficulties in complex auditory domains such as music perception. This study aimed to examine musical pitch and timbre perception, spectral-temporal resolution, and EHF hearing in normal-hearing individuals with and without tinnitus, while exploring the relationships among these measures. Individuals with bilateral tinnitus (n = 28) and without tinnitus (n = 28) were included, and all participants had normal conventional audiograms. Participants were a

Perceptual Distortions in Aided Hearing-Impaired Listeners: Psychophysical Evidence of Excessive Loudness Growth and Altered Timbre Representation.

Hearing aid users often report that some everyday sounds are abnormally intrusive or salient. This issue may stem from distorted coding of sound features due to peripheral impairments and/or hearing aid processing. This study investigates whether aided hearing-impaired (aHI) listeners experience (1) abnormal loudness processing and (2) distorted timbre perception, both of which may contribute to this problem. In Experiment 1, we measured loudness functions using sounds varying in four timbre dimensions (brightness, spectral flux, attack time, roughness) in normal-hearing (NH) and aHI listeners

Neural correlates of musical timbre: an ALE meta-analysis of neuroimaging data.

Timbre is a central aspect of music that allows listeners to identify musical sounds and conveys musical emotion, but also allows for the recognition of actions and is an important structuring property of music. The former functions are known to be implemented in a ventral auditory stream in processing musical timbre. While the latter functions are commonly attributed to areas in a dorsal auditory processing stream in other musical domains, its involvement in musical timbre processing is so far unknown. To investigate if musical timbre processing involves both dorsal and ventral auditory pathw

Impaired perception of harmonic complexity in congenital amusia: a case study.

This study investigates whether congenital amusia (an inability to perceive music from birth) also impairs the perception of musical qualities that do not rely on fine-grained pitch discrimination. We established that G.G. (64-year-old male, age-typical hearing) met the criteria of congenital amusia and demonstrated music-specific deficits (e.g., language processing, intonation, prosody, fine-grained pitch processing, pitch discrimination, identification of discrepant tones and direction of pitch for tones in a series, pitch discrimination within scale segments, predictability of tone sequence

Tone perception development in Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the longer-term effects of cochlear implant (CI) use on tone perception by evaluating improvement in Mandarin tone recognition in children with CIs 2 and 3 years post CI activation, and to explore the effects of implant age, chronological age and duration of CI use on the development of tone perception. METHODS: Tone perception was assessed in 29 bilateral profound hearing impaired children (mean chronological age = 4.6 years, SD = 0.7 years) with unilateral CIs at 24 and 36 months after CI activation using the tone perception subtest in the

Comparison of Two Music Training Approaches on Music and Speech Perception in Cochlear Implant Users.

In normal-hearing (NH) adults, long-term music training may benefit music and speech perception, even when listening to spectro-temporally degraded signals as experienced by cochlear implant (CI) users. In this study, we compared two different music training approaches in CI users and their effects on speech and music perception, as it remains unclear which approach to music training might be best. The approaches differed in terms of music exercises and social interaction. For the pitch/timbre group, melodic contour identification (MCI) training was performed using computer software. For the m

Music Perception in Older Adults With Hearing Loss: Protective Effect of Musical Experience.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of this project was to investigate the impact of musical experience, hearing loss, and age on music perception in older adults. The authors hypothesized that older adults with a varying degree of musical experience would perform better at music perception tasks than their counterparts without musical experience while controlling for age and hearing loss. DESIGN: This study used a descriptive correlational cross-sectional design. Seventy-seven older adults aged 60 to 90 years were recruited and divided into two groups based on their lifetime musical experience: the group w

Functional neuroanatomy of musical object processing in Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia.

Music, besides its emotional and social resonance, models a complex sensory environment exemplifying auditory objects corresponding to sources (musical instruments) and information streams (melodies). These musical dimensions can be variably preserved or blighted by neurodegenerative disease. Music is, therefore, an attractive way to investigate the neural mechanisms of sensory object processing in these diseases. Here, we assessed the functional neuroanatomy underlying the perceptual, semantic, and apperceptive processing of musical objects in Alzheimer's disease and temporal variant frontote

Sensory-cognitive interaction in the neural encoding of speech in noise: a review.

BACKGROUND: Speech-in-noise (SIN) perception is one of the most complex tasks faced by listeners on a daily basis. Although listening in noise presents challenges for all listeners, background noise inordinately affects speech perception in older adults and in children with learning disabilities. Hearing thresholds are an important factor in SIN perception, but they are not the only factor. For successful comprehension, the listener must perceive and attend to relevant speech features, such as the pitch, timing, and timbre of the target speaker's voice. Here, we review recent studies linking S

How Switching Musical Instruments Affects Pitch Discrimination for Cochlear Implant Users.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implant (CI) users struggle with music perception. Generally, they have poorer pitch discrimination and timbre identification than peers with normal hearing, which reduces their overall music appreciation and quality of life. This study's primary aim was to characterize how the increased difficulty of comparing pitch changes across musical instruments affects CI users and their peers with no known hearing loss. The motivation is to better understand the challenges that CI users face with polyphonic music listening. The primary hypothesis was that CI users would be more aff

Implicit auditory sensory memory and short-term memory for musical and verbal stimuli in children with cochlear implants.

The spectrally degraded signal delivered by cochlear implants (CIs) has been suggested to constrain the encoding and temporary retention of sequential auditory information. However, research on short-term memory (STM) in children with CIs has predominantly focused on the verbal domain, with musical STM and implicit auditory sensory memory receiving comparatively limited attention. This study investigated the domain-specific nature of auditory STM in children with CIs relative to typically hearing (TH) peers, alongside implicit auditory sensory memory and music perception. Seventy-five children

Acoustic and perceptual evidence relevant to sexual selection in human voice dimorphism.

Male and female voices differ markedly in pitch and timbre. Previous work suggests that fundamental frequency (F0) and formant dispersion (Df) correlate with body size, but whether these associations hold within each sex and whether subtle acoustic changes affect social perception remain unclear. We integrate acoustic measurements and perceptual experiments to dissect the roles of F0 and Df in signaling height and guiding social judgments. Acoustic data from 40 males and 40 females showed that F0 exhibited a substantial sex difference but little evidence of a within-sex association with height

tDCS modulates speech perception and production in second language learners.

Accurate identification and pronunciation of nonnative speech sounds can be particularly challenging for adult language learners. The current study tested the effects of a brief musical training combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on speech perception and production in a second language (L2). The sample comprised 36 native Hebrew speakers, aged 18-38, who studied English as L2 in a formal setting and had little musical training. Training encompassed musical perception tasks with feedback (i.e., timbre, duration, and tonal memory) and concurrent tDCS applied over the le

Steady, Flexible Memristor with Lead-Free Perovskite for Bionic Perception.

The advancement of artificial intelligence and cloud computing aspires multifunctional components to face complex problems and bionic perception. As one of the emerging neural synapse devices, the perovskite memristor has great potential in information storage and brain-like learning due to its merits, such as low energy consumption and quick processing. Herein, the PET/Graphene/Cs2AgBiBr6/Ag flexible memristor has been successfully fabricated via low-temperature processing (∼100 °C), exhibiting pronounced resistive switching characteristics (ON/OFF ratio: ≈102), long-term environmental stabil

The sound sensation of a pure tone in cochlear implant recipients with single-sided deafness.

Ten cochlear implant (CI) users with single-sided deafness were asked to vary the parameters of an acoustic sound played to their contralateral ear to characterize the perception evoked by a pure tone played through the direct audio input of their CI. Two frequencies, centered on an apical and a medial electrode, were tested. In six subjects, the electrode positions were estimated on CT scans. The study was divided in 3 experiments in which the parameters of the acoustic sound varied. The listeners had to vary the frequency of a pure tone (Exp.1), the center frequency and the bandwidth of a fi

Structural connectivity predicts sequential processing differences in music perception ability.

To relate individual differences in music perception ability with whole brain white matter connectivity, we scanned a group of 27 individuals with varying degrees of musical training and assessed musical ability in sensory and sequential music perception domains using the Profile of Music Perception Skills-Short version (PROMS-S). Sequential processing ability was estimated by combining performance on tasks for Melody, Standard Rhythm, Embedded Rhythm, and Accent subscores while sensory processing ability was ascertained via tasks of Tempo, Pitch, Timbre, and Tuning. Music Enjoyment in Hearing Loss: Beyond Auditory Perception.

Background/Objectives: Music is an important component of quality of life and is increasingly recognized as a meaningful patient-centered outcome in hearing healthcare. Although individuals with hearing loss frequently report reduced enjoyment of music, research in this area has focused on auditory perception, including pitch, timbre, melody, and sound quality. Consequently, music enjoyment is often conceptualized and measured primarily through perceptual performance, despite growing evidence that enjoyment represents a broader subjective experience. Methods: This narrative review examines the
