Quantifying and Visualizing Emergency Physician Workflow: Observational Time-Motion Study.

BACKGROUND: Emergency physicians face considerable workflow challenges in the emergency department (ED) due to unpredictable work environments, frequent interruptions, and mounting documentation requirements, all of which contribute to substantial computer-based work. Excessive time away from direct patient care is increasingly viewed as detrimental to the quality of care, communication, and patient safety. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to quantify and visualize how emergency physicians allocate their time during ED shifts, particularly the time spent on the computer. METHODS: This cross-secti

Comparing time and motion methods to study personnel time in the context of a family planning supply chain intervention in Senegal.

BACKGROUND: A family planning (FP) supply chain intervention was introduced in Senegal in 2012 to reduce contraceptive stock-outs. Labour is the highest cost in low- and middle-income country supply chains. In this paper, we (1) understand time use of personnel working in the FP supply chain at health facilities in Senegal, (2) estimate the validity of self-administered timesheets (STs) relative to continuous observations (COs), and (3) describe the cost of data collection for each method. METHODS: We collected time use data for seven stockroom managers in six facilities using both ST and CO.

Time Savings with Rituximab Subcutaneous Injection versus Rituximab Intravenous Infusion: A Time and Motion Study in Eight Countries.

BACKGROUND: Rituximab is a standard treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. The SABRINA trial (NCT01200758) showed that a subcutaneous (SC) rituximab formulation did not compromise efficacy or safety compared with intravenous (IV) infusion. We aimed to quantify active healthcare professional (HCP) time and patient chair time for rituximab SC and IV, including potential time savings. METHODS: This non-interventional time and motion study was run in eight countries and 30 day oncology units. Rituximab SC data were collected alongside the MabCute trial (NCT01461928); IV data were collected per routi

Resource implications of the latent tuberculosis cascade of care: a time and motion study in five countries.

BACKGROUND: The End TB Strategy calls for global scale-up of preventive treatment for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), but little information is available about the associated human resource requirements. Our study aimed to quantify the healthcare worker (HCW) time needed to perform the tasks associated with each step along the LTBI cascade of care for household contacts of TB patients. METHODS: We conducted a time and motion (TAM) study between January 2018 and March 2019, in which consenting HCWs were observed throughout a typical workday. The precise time spent was recorded in pre-spe

Neural mechanisms for integrating time and visual velocity cues in a prediction motion task: An fNIRS study.

Human beings use accurate estimates of the time-to-collision of moving objects effortlessly in everyday life. In the laboratory, researchers typically apply prediction motion (PM) tasks to investigate motion processing. In the PM tasks, time structure refers to the ratio of travel time between the visible segment (first segment) and occluded segment (second segment). The condition of T = 1.0, which indicates that the time spent moving is the same across the two segments, is called equal time structure. The present study investigated the neural mechanisms of time and visual velocity information

Observation of a Pharmacist-Conducted Group A Streptococcal Pharyngitis Point-of-Care Test: A Time and Motion Study.

BACKGROUND: Acute pharyngitis is among the most common infectious diseases encountered in the United States, resulting in 13 million patient visits annually, with group A streptococcus (GAS) being a common causative pathogen. It is estimated that annual expenditures for the treatment of adult pharyngitis will exceed US$1.2 billion annually. This substantial projection reinforces the need to evaluate diagnosis and treatment of adult pharyngitis in nontraditional settings. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this research is to quantify the amount of pharmacist time required to complete a point-of-care

Real-time myoelectric control of wrist/hand motion in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: A case study.

Introduction: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a genetic disorder that induces progressive muscular degeneration. Currently, the increase in DMD individuals' life expectancy is not being matched by an increase in quality of life. The functioning of the hand and wrist is central for performing daily activities and for providing a higher degree of independence. Active exoskeletons can assist this functioning but require the accurate decoding of the users' motor intention. These methods have, however, never been systematically analyzed in the context of DMD. Methods: This case study evaluated

Real-time classification of shoulder girdle motions for multifunctional prosthetic hand control: A preliminary study.

In every country in the world, there are a number of amputees who have been exposed to some accidents that led to the loss of their upper limbs. The aim of this study is to suggest a system for real-time classification of five classes of shoulder girdle motions for high-level upper limb amputees using a pattern recognition system. In the suggested system, the wavelet transform was utilized for feature extraction, and the extreme learning machine was used as a classifier. The system was tested on four intact-limbed subjects and one amputee, with eight channels involving five electromyography ch

The ergonomics of laparoscopic surgery: a quantitative study of the time and motion of laparoscopic surgeons in live surgical environments.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery presents multiple ergonomic difficulties for the surgeon, requiring awkward body postures and prolonged static muscle loading that increases risk of musculoskeletal strain and injury. This prospective study quantitatively measures the biomechanical movements of surgeons during laparoscopic procedures to determine at-risk movements from prolonged static muscle loading and repetitive motions that may lead to injury. METHODS: A total of 150 video recordings of 18 surgeons, standing at the patient's left, were captured from three fixed camera positions during live

Quantifying the administration and monitoring time burden of several disease-modifying therapies for relapsing multiple sclerosis in the United Kingdom: A time and motion study.

BACKGROUND: The treatment landscape for relapsing multiple sclerosis (MS) has changed dramatically in recent decades, including an increasing number of high-efficacy disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) with varied administration and monitoring requirements. Coupled with greater focus on earlier treatment, these factors have resulted in stretching of the capacity of MS specialist services and allied healthcare professionals (HCPs). To assist with the effective planning of MS services in the UK NHS, this study quantified the administration and monitoring time burden associated with high-efficacy

A time and motion study of subcutaneous versus intravenous trastuzumab in patients with HER2-positive early breast cancer.

Within PrefHer (NCT01401166), patients and healthcare professionals (HCPs) preferred subcutaneous (SC) over intravenous (IV) trastuzumab. We undertook a prospective, observational time and motion study to quantify patients' time in infusion chairs and active HCP time in PrefHer. Patients with HER2-positive early breast cancer received four adjuvant cycles of SC trastuzumab (600 mg fixed dose via SC single-use injection device [SID, Cohort 1] or SC handheld syringe [HHS, Cohort 2]) then four cycles of standard IV trastuzumab or the reverse sequence. Generic case report forms for IV and SC manag

[Cost analysis of tumor-induced osteolysis treated with intravenous zoledronic acid and pamidronate: a time-motion study].

A time-motion study was performed by evaluating time and use of medical supply resources in the administration of zoledronic acid and pamidronate as palliative care of tumor-induced osteolysis within the clinical setting of three Italian oncology day-hospital sites. The direct medical costs were similar for both treatments (Euro 226 for zoledronic acid versus Euro 231 for pamidronate). With the exclusion of the pharmacological therapy, most of the difference in costs derives from nurses' labor costs, which is related to the longer infusion time for pamidronate (1 h, 47 min versus 28 min for zo

Time required to initiate a clinical trial in Canada at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic: an observational research-in-motion study.

BACKGROUND: Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) provide essential evidence to inform practice, but the many necessary steps result in lengthy times to initiation, which is problematic in the case of rapidly emerging infections such as COVID-19. This study aimed to describe the start-up timelines for the Canadian Treatments for COVID-19 (CATCO) RCT. METHODS: We surveyed hospitals participating in CATCO and ethics submission sites using a structured data abstraction form. We measured durations from protocol receipt to site activation and to first patient enrolment, as well as durations of admin
