Time to pregnancy and pregnancy outcome.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the outcome of a pregnancy is related to the time required to achieve that pregnancy (TTP). DESIGN: The distribution of the TTP for pregnancies ending in multiple birth, early (before week 12) and late (weeks 12-28) miscarriage, stillbirth, and extrauterine pregnancy was compared to that of pregnancies ending in singleton birth. Furthermore, the distribution of the TTP for preterm singleton births was compared to that of full-term singleton births. SETTING: Sweden. PATIENT(S): Information from three previous studies on reproduction was used: Women chosen fo

Factors affecting time to pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Both lifestyle factors and occupational and environmental factors have been suggested to affect the female reproductive system. In the present study, the separate and joint effects of several such factors are investigated. METHODS: Information on time to pregnancy (TTP) was available for 1578 women randomly selected from the general Swedish population. The information was collected retrospectively by using self-administered questionnaires. By means of logistic regression of survival data, fecundability odds ratios were determined for many factors. Multivariate models were used to

Relation between time to pregnancy and pregnancy outcome.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown significant correlation between time to pregnancy (TTP) and pregnancy outcomes. But understanding of these mechanisms may not be facilitated. The aim of this study was to determine the relation between TTP and pregnancy outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was a case cohort study that was done in Shahid Beheshti Educational Hospital during 2006-2007. Women aged 18-35 years, who had only one pregnancy without using any contraception method before pregnancy and delivered their first child, were enrolled in this study. Thus, 801 women were selected and follow

Successive time to pregnancy among women experiencing pregnancy loss.

STUDY QUESTION: Is time to pregnancy (TTP) similar across successive pregnancy attempts among women experiencing pregnancy loss? SUMMARY ANSWER: TTP after a loss may be longer compared with TTP before a loss. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Two pregnancy cohort studies have reported that TTP is similar across pregnancy attempts in fertile women. However, this has not been investigated among women experiencing pregnancy losses. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: Data for this analysis come from the Longitudinal Investigation of Fertility and the Environment Study, a population-based, preconception cohort

Urinary paracetamol and time-to-pregnancy.

STUDY QUESTION: Is preconception urinary paracetamol (acetaminophen) associated with time-to-pregnancy (TTP)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Higher urinary paracetamol concentrations among male partners were associated with a longer TTP. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Paracetamol is a commonly used analgesic among women and men of all ages. As metabolites of select chemicals used in the manufacturing of polyurethane foam, dyes and various industrial products, as well as a common medicinal product, paracetamol and its primary metabolite p-aminophenol, are ubiquitous in the environment. Studies investigating the rel

Association of time to pregnancy and the outcome of pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship of subfertility with miscarriage, low birth weight, and preterm delivery. DESIGN: Comparison of time to pregnancy distributions between pregnancies that had different outcomes. Three comparisons were made: (a) miscarriages with live births; within live births, (b) low birth weight infant (up to 2,500 grams) or not low birth weight; (c) preterm birth (37 weeks or less) or not preterm. Cox regression was used to adjust for covariates. POPULATION: All first pregnancies were analyzed from the National Child Development Study, a large survey of young adults

Age of menarche and time to pregnancy.

STUDY QUESTION: Is age of menarche (AOM) associated with subfecundity and/or infertility in adulthood? STUDY ANSWER: A late onset of menarche was associated with a slightly increased risk of subfecundity and infertility. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Abnormal age at onset of menarche is a risk factor for several diseases later in life, but the effect on infertility is unknown. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE AND DURATION: A cohort study of  73 107 pregnant Danish women enrolled in the Danish National Birth Cohort (DNBC) between 1996 and 2002 with self-reported data on AOM and waiting time to pregnancy (TTP).

Time-to-pregnancy among male greenhouse workers.

OBJECTIVES: Fertility problems are an increasing public health issue in industrialised countries. Exposure to exogenous agents with endocrine disrupting properties, such as some pesticides, are potential risk factors for subfertility. The aim of this study was to determine whether time-to-pregnancy (TTP) is prolonged in male greenhouse workers exposed to pesticides in comparison with a non-exposed reference group. METHODS: Data were collected through self-administrated questionnaires with detailed questions on TTP, as well as on lifestyle (for example, smoking habits, coffee and alcohol consu

Couples' body composition and time-to-pregnancy.

STUDY QUESTION: Is couples' body compositions associated with reduced fecundity as measured by a longer time-to-pregnancy (TTP)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Couples whose BMI are within obese class II (≥35 kg/m2) have a longer TTP in comparison to leaner (BMI < 25 kg/m2) couples, observed only when both partner's BMI was jointly modeled. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Extremes of BMI have been associated with a longer TTP and with less successful assisted reproductive technology (ART) outcomes. To our knowledge, the association between measured adiposity in both partners of the couple and prospectively measured

Serum dioxin concentrations and time to pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Pollution may play a role in population trends of declining semen quality and regional differences in time to pregnancy (TTP) in industrialized societies. Dioxins including 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) have been suspected. In 1976, an explosion near Seveso, Italy resulted in the highest TCDD exposure known in residential populations. Twenty years later, we conducted a retrospective cohort study, the Seveso Women's Health Study. METHODS: Of 981 participants, 472 women attempted pregnancy after the explosion, and 278 delivered a livebirth not associated with contracept

Time To Pregnancy and occupational lead exposure.

BACKGROUND: Lead exposure is known to be harmful to the male reproductive system, including impairment of fertility. However, it is unclear whether currently existing low levels of exposure have this effect. AIMS: To study retrospectively current workers in lead using industries (battery manufacture, smelting, etc), and in non-lead using control industries, in four European countries, with Time To Pregnancy as the outcome variable, as part of the EU funded Asclepios Project. METHODS: Exposure assessment was mainly by blood lead values, which were available from the late 1970s, supplemented b

Time to pregnancy among women occupationally exposed to lead.

A retrospective time-to-pregnancy study was conducted among women biologically monitored for exposure to lead. The women were participants of a previous study on spontaneous abortion. They were classified into exposure categories on the basis of questionnaire information, and individual blood lead (B-Pb) measurements. The adjusted incidence density ratios (IDR) of clinically recognized pregnancies were .93 (95% confidence interval [CI] .56 to 1.57) for very low (B-Pb < .5 mumol/L), .84 (CI .48 to 1.45) for low (B-Pb .5 to .9 mumol/L), and .80 (CI 0.42 to 1.54) for higher (B-Pb > or = 1.0 mumol

It's Time to Stop Excluding Early Pregnancy (Losses).

Current guidelines for the care of recurrent pregnancy loss patients in New Zealand typically limit the definition to clinical pregnancies. This approach is not supported by the available evidence, which shows that very early losses are just as prognostically important as clinical losses. Clinical pregnancy is a biologically meaningless construct and is not a suitable method for determining whether a loss is 'valid' or not. The exclusion extends to clinical trials, where treatment is often not initiated until clinical pregnancy has been established. Treatment opportunities are being missed as

Paternal work stress and prolonged time to pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore an association between psychosocial stress at work in married men and their spouses' prolonged time to pregnancy (TTP). METHODS: All married male workers of a large Korean petrochemical enterprise and their wives fulfilling the selection criteria were included. Main selection criteria were lack of use of contraceptives and experienced pregnancy in recent past. Data were available from 322 couples. Psychosocial stress at work was measured by the effort-reward imbalance questionnaire. Prolonged TTP was measured by the "TTP questionnaire". RESULTS

Exposure to tetrachloroethylene-contaminated drinking water and time to pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: The synthetic solvent tetrachloroethylene (PCE), commonly used in dry cleaning operations, is a human neurotoxicant and carcinogen. However, its effect on reproduction is poorly understood, as prior studies have been limited to small occupational cohorts. We examined the association between PCE exposure from contamination of the public drinking water supply and time-to-pregnancy (TTP) in a cohort of mothers from Cape Cod, Massachusetts. METHODS: The Cape Cod Family Health Study is a retrospective cohort study designed to examine the reproductive and developmental health effects of

Anogenital distance, male factor infertility and time to pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Anogenital distance (AGD), the distance between the anus and genitals, is in rodents a well-established marker of early androgen action and has been suggested to be so in humans as well. Thus, a link between human AGD and semen quality and potentially fecundity may exist. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to assess the association between AGD and male factor infertility and among proven fertile men also time to pregnancy (TTP). MATERIAL AND METHODS: All included men were recruited from and examined at Copenhagen University Hospital - Rigshospitalet, Denmark (N = 388). Men with
