Corneal transplantation safety is widely dependent on clinical donor selection. Donor-to-host transmission of rabies and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is well established, and it is lethal for the recipient. Taking into consideration this latter figure, contraindications to ocular tissue transplantation include not only rabies, contact with rabies virus, spongiform encephalitis, family history of spongiform encephalitis, recipients of human pituitary-derived hormones before 1987, surgery using dura mater and brain/spinal surgery before 1992, but also CNS diseases of unknown etiology or those with

Until recently, the families of patients who have given the gift of life have been the invisible group in the transplant circle. They donated the organs and tissues of their loved ones to unknown transplant recipients and then were to grieve alone. As transplantation has matured and become the treatment of choice for end stage organ failure and for other life-enhancing procedures, the importance of the donor and the donor family is being recognised and their needs and expectations identified.

This report contains selected excerpts, presented as a summary, from a public workshop sponsored by the American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) held to discuss West Nile Virus (WNV) and scientific considerations for tissue donors. The daylong workshop was held 9 July 2010 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel at Tyson's Corner in McLean, Virginia, United States (U.S.). The workshop was designed to determine and discuss scientific information that is known, and what is not known, regarding WNV infection and transmission. The goal is to determine how to fill gaps in knowledge of WNV and tissue donation

OBJECTIVES: To identify the needs of family members of organ and/or tissue donors during the events of organ donation.
DESIGN: Retrospective, exploratory, descriptive.
SETTING: Eastern Canada.
PARTICIPANTS: Seven families who had consented to organ and/or tissue donation in 1988 were interviewed in their homes, 10 to 15 months after the sudden and unexpected loss of their loved one. The sample represented nine individual family members whose relationship to the donors included three mothers, two fathers, one husband, two wives, and one sister. All families consented to organ and/or tissue d

AIMS/OBJECTIVES: Here, we describe the annual review of the UK blood services' infection surveillance schemes for 2017 (www.gov.uk/government/publications/safe-supplies-annual-review).
BACKGROUND: The joint NHS Blood and Transplant/Public Health England Epidemiology Unit was set up in 1995 to ensure that blood and tissue safety is maintained, inform donor selection and testing policy and add to public health knowledge.
METHODS: Several surveillance schemes for blood, tissues and bacterial screening collect the numbers of donations tested, reactive and confirmed positive in order to monitor t

Here we report a case of endothelial keratoplasty with infant donor tissue obtained after brain death. A 52-year-old man with endothelial dysfunction of unknown cause in the right eye underwent non-Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (nDSAEK) with tissue from an infant donor (2 years). Intraoperative and postoperative complications were recorded. Best corrected visual acuity and donor central endothelial cell density were recorded preoperatively and postoperatively. Infant donor tissue preparation with a microkeratome set at 300 μm was successful; the donor tissue was extreme

We studied bacterial contamination of corneal donor material following processing by two techniques prior to immersion in McCarey-Kaufman medium. If the whole eye was immersed in Neosporin, 24.5% of cultures were positive. If eyes were only rinsed with Neosporin, 47.5% of cultures were positive. No eyes receiving this tissue developed infections. Cultures were much more likely to be positive if the donors had been on a respirator prior to death.

Understanding the relationships among altruistic health acts may serve to aid therapeutic research advances. In this paper, we report on the links between two such behaviours-donating blood and carrying an organ donor card-and willingness to donate urological tissue to a tissue bank. Reasons for the differential willingness to do so are examined in this paper. A systematic sample of 259 new and returning attendees at a tertiary urology referral clinic in Ireland completed a self-report questionnaire in an outpatient setting. In addition to demographic details, details of known diagnosis of mal

BACKGROUND: Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus type-1 (HTLV-1) infection is associated with serious disorders, including Adult T-cell Leukemia/Lymphoma (ATLL) and HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). In addition to sexual, vertical, parenteral, and blood transfusion, organ/tissue transplantation is considered as a transmission route of HTLV infection. Given the substantial risk of HTLV-1 transmission and the subsequent development of HAM/TSP (approximately 40%) in kidney transplant recipients, pre-transplant donor screening is crucial. The present study aimed to in

Microbiological cultures were performed on the blood and bone marrow of 239 cadaver bone donors and 58 "beating heart cadaver" organ donors who had been asymptomatic of sepsis. The incidence of positive blood cultures was significantly lower among the "beating heart cadaver" donors (8.6%) as compared to other donors from whom tissues were excised up to 30 hr postmortem (38%). Microorganisms were isolated from the bones of 82 of 148 (55.4%) bone donors as well as from 36 of 53 (67.9%) "beating heart cadaver" donors who had negative blood cultures. The majority of microbial species recovered fro

PURPOSE: To describe and compare 2 preparation techniques for Bowman layer (BL) grafts for use in BL transplantation.
METHODS: A retrospective evaluation of the 2 methods for preparing BL grafts was performed, that is, BL graft preparation from donor globes not eligible for penetrating keratoplasty or endothelial keratoplasty (technique I, n = 36) and BL graft preparation from previously excised corneoscleral buttons (technique II, n = 36) that could not be used for PK or had been denuded of Descemet membrane and endothelium for Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty graft preparation. Publications are reviewed to identify factors related to donor care that may optimize the function of pancreatic tissue (whole or segmental organ or islet cells) after transplantation. Short cold ischemia time, avoidance of hypotension, and treatment of donor hyperglycemia appear to be beneficial, although additional properly designed studies are needed to verify those findings.

The gap between the clinical demand for transplantable organs/tissues and the limited availability of deceased donors motivates the search for alternative donor types. This growing need has prompted exploration into non-traditional donor populations, including those who have died due to circulatory causes, elderly individuals, and donors previously excluded from consideration, such as those with extensive burns. Burned deceased donors are often perceived as unsuitable due to the detrimental effects of burn injury on multiple organ systems, including the phenomenon known as "burn disease." This

In 2001, the inquiry panel appointed to investigate the removal, retention and disposal of human organs and tissues at the Royal Liverpool Children's Hospital published its report. The panel's recommendations led to a new approach to consent for organ removal and storage under the new Human Tissue Act 2004. For child bone marrow donors, the new consent process requires all donor children or their parent to undergo a separate assessment before the bone marrow donation. They must be assessed by an accredited assessor who will submit a recommendation to the Human Tissue Authority for consideratio

Objective: To investigate the causes of death and etiological characteristics of skin tissue donors, and to provide reference for allogeneic skin transplantation. Methods: From October 2008 to October 2018, 49 skin tissue donors accepted by the Burn Department of Wuhan Third Hospital met the inclusion criteria of this study, and a cross-sectional study was conducted. According to the cause of death, the donors were divided into accidental death group (19 cases) and non-accidental death group (30 cases). The sex and death age of 49 donors were recorded, and the death age between different sex d

Eye and Tissue donation has the capacity to transform lives, yet the vast majority of potential in-hospital donors are not recognised. Studies which describe the relative importance of specific units or wards in determining the size of the donor pool are limited. The aim of this study was to map the distribution of potential Eye and Tissue donors within the study hospital. A 12-month retrospective analysis of all patient deaths at the study hospital was undertaken. The ability to donate corneal, heart valve, bone and skin tissue was investigated. Patients were classified as potential donors if

Concern about false negative serology tests for infectious diseases in hemodiluted cadaver donors resulted in issuance of new regulations and guidelines from the FDA and CDC. Bone or tissue from donors receiving > or = 4 units of blood, blood products, colloids or crystalloids within 48 h of sampling must be quarantined unless: (a) a pretransfusion serum is available; or (b) an adequate algorithm is employed to ensure hemodilution is insufficient to alter test results, i.e. cause false negatives. Left undefined in these regulations is, what is an adequate algorithm and what amount of hemodilut

BACKGROUND: Corneal tissue is a critical component for vision restoration through transplantation, yet the availability of suitable corneal tissue is limited. This limitation results in long waiting lists and high demand, especially in countries with lower donation rates compared to global benchmarks. In Mexico, the corneal donation rate remains significantly behind other Latin American countries and leading nations such as Spain. Understanding the characteristics of corneal tissue donors is essential for improving donation practices and addressing the shortage of available tissues.

Microbiological screening of tissue allografts is crucial to prevent the transmission of bacterial and fungal infections to transplant recipients. Klebsiella was the most prevalent and resistant contaminating microorganism observed in our setting in the Iranian Tissue Bank. This study was conducted to determine the presence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes, antimicrobial resistance patterns of Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates, and their clonal relationships in allograft materials. K. pneumoniae contaminating bone and other tissue allografts recovered from deceased donors were identi
