BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) has become a public health challenge in the current scenario with a single causative agent, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) causing the highest morbidity and mortality affecting almost 1.7 million of the population. Furthermore, there has been no novel drug discovery for the past five decades, and the emergence of latent, multiple drug-resistant, and extensively drug-resistant species has given rise to an alarming necessity for a novel compound/s for treating this highly untamable microbe. In developing countries, plant-based drugs have shown promising results in

The herbivory activity of the bordered patch larvae (Chlosyne lacinia, Lepidoptera) on leaves of a Brazilian population of Tithonia diversifolia and the antifeedant potential of its leaf rinse extract were investigated. The caterpillars fed only on the adaxial face, where the density of glandular trichomes is very low, and avoided the abaxial face, which contains high levels of trichomes. Deterrent activity against the larvae was observed in leaf discs treated with leaf rinse extract at concentrations of 1-5% of fresh leaf weight. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis indicate

Emissions from ruminant livestock represent an important component of agricultural greenhouse gas output. The sector, however, has substantial potential for emission reduction through improved practices. Tithonia diversifolia (TD), a shrub that thrives in low-fertility soils, offers promise as a sustainable feed alternative. This study explores whether ruderal TD, accessible but with variable nutritional quality, can be used to reduce enteric methane (CH4) emissions and nitrogen (N) excretion in sheep, offering a low-input strategy for enhancing ruminant sustainability. Eight adult rams were u

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Tithonia diversifolia (Hemsl.) A. Gray has been commonly used in folk medicine to treat abscesses, microbiological infections, snake bites, malaria and diabetes. Both anti-inflammatory and anti-malarial properties have been identified using appropriate assays, but the effective doses have demonstrated toxic effects for the experimental animals. Most of the pharmacological activities have been attributed to sesquiterpene lactones (STLs) and some chlorogenic acid derivatives (CAs) in the leaves of this species. This work aimed to evaluate the repeated-dose toxicit

Leaf-cutter ants are agricultural and urban pests that defy chemical control methods. Laboratory and field studies have revealed repellent and insecticidal activity by the extracts of Tithonia diversifolia (Asteraceae), known as Mexican sunflower, as a promising alternative for the control of the leaf-cutter ant Atta cephalotes. This study evaluated the effects of different extracts (non-polar and polar) of T. diversifolia dry leaves on worker ants from laboratory colonies of A. cephalotes through ingestion and contact. In addition, the biological activity of the extracts as inhibitors of acet

The invasive plant Tithonia diversifolia is a promising source of botanical insecticides, yet the mechanisms by which its active compounds impair insect physiology remain incompletely characterized. This study investigated the effects of 6-methoxyluteolin (6-ML), a flavonoid isolated from T. diversifolia, on melanization and cuticle integrity in Spodoptera litura larvae. Cuticle melanization, mediated by tyrosinase-catalyzed oxidation of tyrosine-derived substrates, is essential for cuticle sclerotization and immune defense in insects. Whether 6-ML directly targets this pathway has not been pr

Parasitic diseases caused by gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) are considered important limiting factors for livestock production worldwide, as they significantly compromise animal welfare and increase production costs. For years, parasite control has relied exclusively on the use of synthetic drugs. Resistance of GIN to commercial anthelmintics has been increasingly reported throughout the world. Therefore, alternative approaches have emerged for controlling GIN in farm animals, including the exploration of plants with bioactive potential. Tithonia diversifolia can be harvested year-round, and

Tithonia diversifolia, an invasive weed, has potential as a natural alternative to chemical insecticides. However, the specific insecticidal compounds and their mechanisms of action against Spodoptera litura have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, an extract was prepared using 85 % methanol containing 0.2 % hydrochloric acid, and it was analyzed using UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. A feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the extract and its compounds on S. litura larvae, alongside a transcriptomic analysis to explore the underlying mechanisms. Results showed that 18 compou

Small ruminant production under grazing conditions plays a crucial role in the global primary sector economy. However, these animals are highly susceptible to gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs), which significantly impact their health and welfare. Given the increasing resistance to conventional anthelmintics, there is a pressing need to explore sustainable alternatives, such as plant secondary metabolites. This study aimed to identify phenolic compounds with anthelmintic activity from Tithonia diversifolia aerial parts, using Haemonchus contortus as a biological model. Egg hatching inhibition (
