Levels of Chemical Toxicants in Waterpipe Tobacco and Waterpipe Charcoal Solid Waste.

This work provides insights on waterpipe tobacco and waterpipe charcoal as potential sources of environmental toxicants. Selected harmful and potentially harmful constituents (HPHCs) from ten U.S. commercial waterpipe tobacco filler products (before and after electric heating) and five waterpipe charcoal products (before and after burning) were investigated. The differences in quantities of HPHCs between the evaluated products appear to be affected by raw material properties and/or the manufacturing processes involved in product production. Trace metal quantities in waterpipe tobacco and charc

The effects of tobacco waterpipe smoking on the ocular surface.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This study was conducted to determine the effect of tobacco waterpipe smoking on the ocular surface. The findings could be useful in understanding ocular surface changes and associated symptoms in waterpipe smokers. BACKGROUND: Tobacco smoking has been reported to have many systemic and ocular adverse effects. However, the effect of specific delivery methods of tobacco using a waterpipe on the eye has not been commonly studied. METHODS: This study enrolled 33 waterpipe smokers (with no history of cigarette smoking) and 31 non-smokers of age-matched control group. Particip

Prevalence and associated factors of waterpipe tobacco smoking in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the global increase in waterpipe tobacco use (hookah tobacco, shisha), its prevalence and characteristics are understudied in Japan. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors of waterpipe tobacco use in the Japanese population. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Japan 'Society and New Tobacco' Internet Survey, conducted in February 2023. Of the 34000 surveyed participants, a total of 31037 respondents (91.3%) aged 15-82 years were included. Current waterpipe tobacco smokers were defined as those reporting use 'occasionally' or 'almost every day' in

The prevalence and trends of waterpipe tobacco smoking: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Waterpipe tobacco smoking is harmful to health however its prevalence estimates remain uncertain. We aimed to systematically review the medical literature on waterpipe tobacco prevalence and trends. METHODS: We searched Medline, Embase and ISI Web of Science for 'waterpipe' and its synonyms, without using language or date restrictions. We included any measure of waterpipe tobacco smoking prevalence in jurisdictionally representative populations. We stratified findings by prevalence measure (past 30 day, ever, regular or occasional, daily, other or unspecified) and age (adults or

Would placing pictorial health warnings on waterpipe devices reduce waterpipe tobacco smoking? A qualitative exploration of Egyptian waterpipe smokers' and non-smokers' responses.

BACKGROUND: Although Egypt places four generic pictorial health warnings (PHWs) on the front and back half of waterpipe tobacco packs (WTPs), waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) rates have continued to rise. It has been suggested that PHWs would be more salient if placed on the waterpipe device itself. This qualitative study explored how participants perceived the effects placing PHWs on waterpipe devices would have on warning salience and uptake or quitting of WTS. METHODS: We conducted 10 focus groups and 10 in-depth interviews with 90 adult waterpipe smokers and non-smokers, men and women, who

Monitoring and Combating Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking Through Surveillance and Taxation.

Waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) is a traditional tobacco use method that originated in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) and has resurged in recent decades. WTS rates in the EMR are the highest worldwide, especially among youth, exceeding cigarette-smoking rates in select jurisdictions. Despite its documented harm, the growing prevalence of WTS has been met with a poor regulatory response globally. At the epicenter of the WTS epidemic, countries in the EMR are in urgent need of effective tobacco control strategies that consider the particularities of WTS. A roundtable session, titled "Mon

Toxicant inhalation among singleton waterpipe tobacco users in natural settings.

BACKGROUND: Studies that assess waterpipe tobacco smoking behaviour and toxicant exposure generally use controlled laboratory environments with small samples that may not fully capture real-world variability in human behaviour and waterpipe products. This study aimed to conduct real-time sampling of waterpipe tobacco use in natural environments using an in situ device. METHODS: We used the REALTIME sampling instrument: a validated, portable, self-powered device designed to sample automatically a fixed percentage of the aerosol flowing through the waterpipe mouthpiece during every puff. We rec

Tobacco-specific nitrosamine exposures in smokers and nonsmokers exposed to cigarette or waterpipe tobacco smoke.

INTRODUCTION: The causal relationship between tobacco smoking and a variety of cancers is attributable to the carcinogens that smokers inhale, including tobacco-specific nitrosamines (TSNAs). We aimed to assess the exposure to TSNAs in waterpipe smokers (WPS), cigarette smokers (CS), and nonsmoking females exposed to tobacco smoke. METHODS: We measured 2 metabolites, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol (NNAL) and its glucuronides (NNAl-Gluc) in the urine of males who were either current CS or WPS, and their wives exposed to either cigarette or waterpipe smoke in a sample of 46 subje

First report on BTEX leaching from waterpipe tobacco wastes (WTWs) into aquatic environment.

Waterpipe tobacco wastes (WTWs) may contain considerable levels of hazardous contaminants such as BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, and m/p-xylene). However, no research has been carried out on BTEX levels in WTWs and the release of these pollutants into the water environment. This research examined the levels of BTEX in WTWs of flavored/local tobacco and also the release rate of these toxins into three kinds of water, including seawater (SW), tap water (TW), and distilled water (DW) with different leaching times (15, 30 min, 1.2, 4, 8 h, and 1, 2, and 4 days). The mean contents

Emissions from conventional and electronic waterpipes relative to cigarettes and a heated tobacco product.

Harms associated with the use of smoked tobacco products, including waterpipes, are due to inhalational exposure to toxicants either present in tobacco or formed during the process of combustion. We assessed levels of 37 toxicants in aerosol emissions from conventional waterpipe heated with different charcoals and also with a heat management device (HMD), from the IQOS heated tobacco product (HTP), and the 'OOKA' electronic waterpipe. We also utilised literature data on toxicant yields in 3R4F reference cigarette smoke. When taking use patterns into account, toxicant yields were substantially

Beyond cigarettes: waterpipe tobacco use as a key driver of paediatric asthma in Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a prevalent chronic disease among children worldwide. Exposure to parental environmental tobacco smoke is a known risk factor for paediatric asthma, but the specific impact of different tobacco products, such as waterpipe, is not well established. In Jordan, where waterpipe smoking is culturally accepted and widespread, understanding its association with childhood asthma is critical. This study aimed to assess the association between parental tobacco use-particularly waterpipe smoking-and the presence of physician-diagnosed paediatric asthma in Jordan. METHODS: A hospita

From knowledge production to knowledge translation: Waterpipe tobacco control research in the Eastern Mediterranean Region.

Waterpipe tobacco smoking (WTS) rates in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR) are the highest worldwide, particularly among young people. Although fiscal policies to curb tobacco use have been recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), implementation has been suboptimal. The Eastern Mediterranean Consortium on the Economics of Waterpipe Tobacco Smoking (ECON-WTS) was formed in response to this need to produce knowledge on the economics of WTS in the EMR and apply a comprehensive Knowledge translation (KT) framework.
