Common Measures to Evaluate Flavored Tobacco Products: Recommendations From the Tobacco Centers for Regulatory Science (TCORS) Flavored Tobacco Products Measurement Subcommittee.

INTRODUCTION: Flavored electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) and tobacco products are associated with the initiation and progression of tobacco use. With recent restrictions around flavored products, it is critical to measure both the product and the flavor being used. The Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS) Flavored Tobacco Products Measurement Subcommittee (FTPMS) was established to develop core measures to assess flavored tobacco and ENDS product usage, facilitate data harmonization, replicability, and comparisons across studies. AIMS AND METHODS: The FTPMS used a mixed-met

Carbonyl emissions from heated tobacco products.

INTRODUCTION: The scope of this work is to determine the carbonyl emissions from five heated tobacco products (HTPs) and the existence of differences in the emissions based on the brand, on the stick (having a different flavor) and on the puffing regime. METHODS: Carbonyls were determined in the mainstream emissions of HTPs. Vapors from 5 commercial HTPs: IQOS, LIL, PULZE, ILUMA and GLO, and fifteen different stick flavors were generated using a peristaltic pump under both ISO and Canadian puffing regimes. Carbonyls were collected in an impinger containing a 2,4-dinitrophenylhydrazine (2,4-DN

Carcinogenic substances in Soviet tobacco products.

Chemical carcinogens were determined in mainstream smoke from nonfilter cigarettes produced and consumed in the USSR and in nass, a mixture of tobacco, lime, ash and cotton oil. Cigarettes contained high levels of tar (23-25 mg/cigarette) and nicotine (1.5-1.9 mg/cigarette) and, generally, a high content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are major epithelial carcinogens, N-nitrosamines, which are organ-specific carcinogens, and some carcinogenic metals, such as arsenic and chromium. Nass contained the tobacco-specific N-nitroso compounds, N'-nitrosonornicotine, N'-nitrosoanatabine, N'

Changes in the Use of Tobacco, Alternative Tobacco Products, and Tobacco Alternatives in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Due to the increasing use of alternative tobacco products (waterpipes, heat-not-burn) and tobacco alternatives (e-cigarettes), we studied recent changes in the prevalence of conventional tobacco use and alternative products. METHODS: Data come from ten waves of the Epidemiological Survey of Substance Abuse (ESA) from 1995 to 2021, with representative samples collected via paperpencil questionnaires, telephone interviews, or online. We compared the prevalence of conventional tobacco use and alternative products by gender and age (18-24, 25-39, 40-59 years). RESULTS: In all age gro

Sugars in Tobacco Products: Toxicity Research and Implications for Tobacco Product Regulation.

Sugars are naturally present in tobacco plants and are introduced as additives during the manufacturing of various tobacco- and nicotine-containing products. Product palatability and appeal are the primary reasons for manufacturers' attention to the sugar content in tobacco and nicotine products. However, because of the complex chemistry of sugars and their thermal decomposition, these versatile constituents are also contributing to the toxicity profile of tobacco and nicotine products. Using published empirical data, this non-systematic review summarizes the state of knowledge on the toxicolo

Abuse liability assessment of tobacco products including potential reduced exposure products.

The harm produced by tobacco products is a result of frequent use of a highly toxic product. Reducing the adverse public health impact of tobacco products might be most effectively achieved by reducing the likelihood of their use and the toxicity of the products. Products that retain some characteristics of cigarettes but have been altered with the intention of reducing toxicity have been referred to as modified risk tobacco products or potential reduced exposure products (MRTP/PREP). Evaluation of their content, emission, and toxicity is discussed in other articles in this special issue. Here

Risk Assessment Models for Heated Tobacco Products.

Heated tobacco products (HTPs) are marketed as alternatives to conventional cigarettes with a potential reduced risk profile. Yet, their actual impact on cancer and noncancer disease risk remains uncertain and requires rigorous quantitative assessment. In this study, we develop a unified and transparent computational framework for toxicological risk assessment of HTPs, integrating chemical emissions data with compound-specific toxicological thresholds derived from regulatory agencies. Our work (i) systematically reviews and harmonizes existing risk models used in the literature, (ii) formulate

[Current Status of Flavored Tobacco Products Use].

Flavored Tobacco Products (FTPs) are widely used by adolescents, youths, and women. Framework Convention on Tobacco Control recommends regulating tobacco flavoring. From May to June 2022, an online and qualitative survey of a nationwide panel of people aged 13–39 years was conducted. Of the 10,030 participants, 6,374 (63.5%) had used tobacco products. Among 5,243 current users, 4,045 (77.2%) were FTP users—an increase of 12.4%p from 64.8% in 2016. In terms of current FTP users by age group, 85.0% were aged 13–18, 80.1% were 19–24 years, and 74.5% were 25–39 years. There were twice as many resp

[Why limit the use of tobacco products?].

The scientific evidence strongly shows that there is no safe level of exposure to tobacco smoke. It is indisputable that the only effective way to protect the population from the harmful effects of SHS is a 100% smoke-free environment. Implemented legal regulations of countries and regions that have already implemented a smoke-free policy were not only feasible, but also well received. They have only positive effects on all sectors, especially in regard to health - actual reduction in heart attacks and respiratory illnesses. In accordance with the positive experiences and scientifically substa

Global Tobacco Use: Old and New Products.

Tobacco use and exposure to tobacco smoke remain major but avoidable causes of premature mortality and disease worldwide. Although the age-standardized prevalence of daily smoking has declined for both men and women in many countries, the number of smokers continues to increase because of global population growth. Although cigarettes are the most commonly used tobacco product, the tobacco epidemic has become tremendously complex with the emergence and popularity of alternative products such as waterpipes and electronic cigarettes (also known as e-cigarettes). Exposure sciences play a major rol

Levels of mint and wintergreen flavorants: smokeless tobacco products vs. confectionery products.

Nicotine and flavorant compound levels were measured in 10 "mint"-related sub-brands and 8 "wintergreen" sub-brands of smokeless tobacco (SLT). Also analyzed were "mint"-related and "wintergreen" confectionery products. Of the "mint" SLT, "Timberwolf Packs Mint Pouches" contained the highest menthol level (5.3 mg/g); the average for the five most-highly mentholated SLT products was 4.3 mg/g. The average for the most five most-highly mentholated confectionery products was 3.5 mg/g. For hard candy, a reported average of maximum use levels is 2.1 mg/g (Burdock, 2009). Of the "wintergreen" SLT, "H

Tobacco retailers' views on selling tobacco and nicotine products, tobacco control policies and phasing out tobacco sales: a scoping review.

AIM: This scoping review synthesises the global evidence on tobacco retailers' attitudes towards selling tobacco, tobacco control (TC) measures and the potential phase out of tobacco sales. METHODS: We searched eight databases covering health, social science and business topics to identify records published between 2000 and 2024. Records were eligible for inclusion if they examined tobacco retailers' perceptions, attitudes or views on selling tobacco and nicotine products, or opinions on TC measures or ceasing tobacco sales. The review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Scoping Review

Pan masala advertisements are surrogate for tobacco products.

BACKGROUND: Pan masala is a comparatively recent habit in India and is marketed with and without tobacco. Advertisements of tobacco products have been banned in India since 1st May 2004. The advertisements of plain pan masala, which continue in Indian media, have been suspected to be surrogate for tobacco products bearing the same name. The study was carried out to assess whether these advertisements were for the intended product, or for tobacco products with same brand name. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The programme of a popular television Hindi news channel was watched for a 24-h period. Program

Dental caries: Impact of tobacco product among tobacco chewers and tobacco smokers.

OBJECTIVE: Tobacco is the most significant social burden and the leading cause of death. Tobacco is derived from "Nicotiana tabacum" which has nicotine as the main component. There are various disadvantages from tobacco on health which are reported in the medical literature. But the risk of caries among these tobacco users, such as chewers and smokers, is still debatable. Hence, the present study aims to determine the prevalence of dental caries among tobacco chewers and smokers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, 389 individuals were included. Out of 389 individuals, 304 were men and 85 w

Tobacco and nicotine product testing.

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco product testing is a critical component of the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (FSPTCA), which grants the Food and Drug Administration the authority to regulate tobacco products. The availability of methods and measures that can provide accurate data on the relative health risks across types of tobacco products, brands, and subbrands of tobacco products on the validity of any health claims associated with a product, and on how consumers perceive information on products toxicity or risks is crucial for making decisions on the product's potential impact on
