Seroprevalence and distribution of Flaviviridae, Togaviridae, and Bunyaviridae arboviral infections in rural Cameroonian adults.

Arboviruses from the families Flaviviridae, Togaviridae, and Bunyaviridae are suspected to cause widespread morbidity in sub-Saharan African populations, but little research been done to document the burden and distribution of these pathogens. We tested serum samples from 256 Cameroonian adults from nine rural villages for the presence of Dengue-2 (DEN-2), West Nile (WN), Yellow fever (YF), Chikungunya (CHIK), O'nyong-nyong (ONN), Sindbis (SIN), and Tahyna (TAH) infection using standard plaque-reduction neutralization tests (PRNT). Of these samples, 12.5% were DEN-2 positive, 6.6% were WN posi

Pathology and virus detection in tissues of nestling house sparrows naturally infected with Buggy Creek virus (Togaviridae).

Alphaviruses (Togaviridae) infect wild birds, but clinical illness and death attributable to virus in naturally infected birds is rarely reported, particularly for small passerine species or nestlings. Buggy Creek virus is a unique alphavirus in the Western equine encephalomyelitis virus (WEEV) complex that is vectored by the cimicid swallow bug (Oeciacus vicarius), an ectoparasite of the colonially nesting Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) and the introduced House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). While sampling birds for Buggy Creek virus (BCRV) during the summers of 2007 and 2008, we disc

Viruses of the Bunya- and Togaviridae families: potential as bioterrorism agents and means of control.

When considering viruses of potential importance as tools for bioterrorism, several viruses in the Bunya- and Togaviridae families have been cited. Among those in the Bunyaviridae family are Rift Valley fever, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever, hanta, and sandfly fever viruses, listed in order of priority. Those particularly considered in the Togaviridae family are Venezuelan, eastern and western equine encephalitis viruses. Factors affecting the selection of these viruses are the ability for them to induce a fatal or seriously incapacitating illness, their ease of cultivation in order to prepar

Neuroimaging features of arboviral infections in the Americas.

Arboviruses are zoonotic RNA viruses maintained in nature in cycles that involve arthropod vectors. The arboviruses that cause disease in humans are members of the Bunyaviridae, Togaviridae, Flaviviridae, and Reoviridae families. These viral species have geographically and climatically restricted distributions due to particular ecological and vector features. The main emerging arboviruses in the Americas are dengue, zika, yellow fever (Flaviviridae), and chikungunya (Togaviridae). All of these viruses can be transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. Although not commonl

Haemagglutination-inhibiting antibodies against arboviruses of the families Togaviridae and Bunyaviridae in birds caught in southern Moravia, Czechoslovakia.

A total of 295 birds belonging to 19 species of 7 families of wild Passeriformes were examined by haemagglutination-inhibition test. The birds were caught for an international research program "Balt" at the time of autumn migration (August-September 1984). Their blood sera were examined for antibodies against 6 arbovirus antigens of the genera Alphavirus (Sindbis-SIN) and Flavivirus (tick-borne encephalitis-TBE, West Nile-WN) and family Bunyaviridae (Tahyna-TAH, Calovo-CVO and Bhanja-BHA). Antibodies against all studied viruses were detected at different frequencies: SIN 6.4%, TBE 7.1%, WN 9.7

Arthropod-borne virus antibodies in sera of residents of Kainji Lake Basin, Nigeria 1980.

A survey for haemagglutination-inhibiting arthropod-borne virus antibody was carried out in the Kainji Lake area of Nigeria. Of 267 persons tested, 139 (52%) and 158 (59%) had alphavirus and flavivirus group HI antibody, respectively. The prevalence of antibody to individual virus antigen is as follows: Chikungunya, 45%; Semliki Forest, 25%; Sindbis, 33%, Yellow fever, 31%, Dengue type 2, 46%; and Zika 56%. The presence of high antibody rates to Chikungunya, Dengue type 2 and Yellow fever viruses is of public health significance. These viruses have been identified as the most important arthrop

Encephalitic Arboviruses of Africa: Emergence, Clinical Presentation and Neuropathogenesis.

Many mosquito-borne viruses (arboviruses) are endemic in Africa, contributing to systemic and neurological infections in various geographical locations on the continent. While most arboviral infections do not lead to neuroinvasive diseases of the central nervous system, neurologic diseases caused by arboviruses include flaccid paralysis, meningitis, encephalitis, myelitis, encephalomyelitis, neuritis, and post-infectious autoimmune or memory disorders. Here we review endemic members of the Flaviviridae and Togaviridae families that cause neurologic infections, their neuropathogenesis and host

Interferon and antibody titrations using haemagglutinating Togaviridae and trypsinized human erythrocytes.

Several Togaviridae of the alphavirus and flavivirus genera agglutinate trypsinized human group O erythrocytes (THOE) (Shortridge and Hu, 1976). Haemagglutinin titers of Semliki Forest virus (SFV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) measured with THOE were equivalent to, if not higher than, those obtained with Embden gander erythrocytes, even with unextracted haemagglutinin. Results obtained with THOE in JEV haemagglutination-inhibition tests on sera taken from a previously infected individual over a 20-yr period were similar to those measured during the initial JEV infection. The inhibition

Complex antigen presentation pathway for an HLA-A*0201-restricted epitope from Chikungunya 6K protein.

BACKGROUND: The adaptive cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL)-mediated immune response is critical for clearance of many viral infections. These CTL recognize naturally processed short viral antigenic peptides bound to human leukocyte antigen (HLA) class I molecules on the surface of infected cells. This specific recognition allows the killing of virus-infected cells. The T cell immune T cell response to Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a mosquito-borne Alphavirus of the Togaviridae family responsible for severe musculoskeletal disorders, has not been fully defined; nonetheless, the importance of HLA class

Chikungunya.

Chikungunya is a rapidly emerging infectious disease caused by a virus of the genus Alphavirus, family Togaviridae. Most commonly, patients have an acute onset of fever with often debilitating symmetric joint discomfort that can relapse months after the initial infection. This infection is typically transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquito, vectors that also transmit dengue and yellow fever. Special Operations Forces Medical Providers should be aware of this disease, which is currently being diagnosed worldwide.

Performance assessment of a multi-epitope chimeric antigen for the serological diagnosis of acute Mayaro fever.

Mayaro virus (MAYV), which causes mayaro fever, is endemic to limited regions of South America that may expand due to the possible involvement of Aedes spp. mosquitoes in its transmission. Its effective control will require the accurate identification of infected individuals, which has been restricted to nucleic acid-based tests due to similarities with other emerging members of the Alphavirus genus of the Togaviridae family; both in structure and clinical symptoms. Serological tests have a more significant potential to expand testing at a reasonable cost, and their performance primarily refle

Single-radial-haemolysis test for diagnosing flavivirus infections, particularly Japanese encephalitis.

Use of the single-radial-haemolysis (SRH) technique for the diagnosis of flavivirus infections is described. A large number of paired and single convalescent serum samples collected from cases of encephalitis during two major outbreaks in Kolar district of Karnataka State in India during 1977 and 1979 were tested by this technique. The results were compared with those obtained in the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) test in all cases, and the complement fixation (CF) and neutralization tests in some cases. Japanese encephalitis virus was shown by the SRH test to be the major etiologic agent r

An outbreak of Mayaro virus disease in Belterra, Brazil. II. Epidemiology.

Epidemiological investigations of an outbreak of Mayaro (MAY) virus which occurred inthe rural village of Belterra, Pará, Brazil are reported. Human cases were first recorded in December 1977 and continued through June 1978. Approximately 20% of the more than 4,000 persons resident in Belterra were infected, and a very high proportion of those infected suffered overt clinical illness. Cases were identified in all areas of Belterra and among all age groups; however, the greatest number of cases was seen among those who resided in close proximity to the forests. Yellow fever (YF) virus was also

[Virology of the family Togaviridae].

Many pathogens important for medicine, veterinary medicine or public health belong to the genera alphavirus and rubivirus within the family Togaviridae. 29 species of alphaviruses have been reported, and most of them are arboviruses. Chikungnya virus re-emerged in Kenya in 2004 and the epidemics spread to the Indian Ocean islands and many countries in South Asia, South-East Asia and Europe. On the other hand, rubella virus, a sole member of the genus rubivirus, is the causative agent of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Because human is only a natural host of the virus and effecti

Neonatal Chikungunya: A case series.

Chikungunya virus is an RNA virus that belongs to the family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes. The disease usually manifests as fever, arthralgia and petechial or maculopapular rash. The illness is usually self-limiting. We report a series of neonates infected with Chikungunya virus, confirmed by ELISA test, showing that viral Chikungunya can be transmitted from mother to babies and its clinical presentation is that of septicemia or meningitis.

Viral infection including HIV and AIDS.

Viruses have long been considered candidates for infectious etiologic agents or cofactors in the development of rheumatic diseases. The current epidemic of HIV infection and the recognition of "emerging viruses" has focused interest on the possible role of viruses in pathogenesis of diseases without defined etiology. Over the past year, the role of parvovirus B19 in chronic arthropathy was further defined. Additional data added to our understanding of the mechanisms by which rubella virus may cause chronic arthritis. We were reminded of the potential the togaviruses have to cause epidemics of

Clinical and pathological studies in adult sheep and goats experimentally infected with Wesselsbron disease virus.

The clinical symptoms and pathology in 33 adult sheep and 31 adult goats experimentally infected with Wesselsbron disease virus are described. There was moderate to severe hyperthermia in most animals, but no other clinical signs of disease or deaths were recorded. Eleven sheep and 6 goats were sacrificed for pathological studies at various stages during the febrile response. The macroscopic and microscopic lesions in these cases are described. Microscopic studies revealed that the liver was consistently affected and showed small foci of necrosis. These were sparsely distributed and associated
