Toilet training is a significant developmental milestone in early childhood. Most U.S. children achieve the physiologic, cognitive, and emotional development necessary for toilet training by 18 to 30 months of age. Markers of readiness for toilet training include being able to walk, put on and remove clothing, and follow parental instruction; expressive language; awareness of a full bladder or rectum; and demonstrated dissatisfaction with a soiled diaper. Other readiness cues include imitating toileting behavior, expressing desire to toilet, and demonstrating bladder or bowel control (staying

Toileting skills are a milestone typically achieved by the age of four. For many caregivers, particularly those who have children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder or other developmental disabilities, teaching toileting is a challenge resulting in delayed implementation. Delaying toileting increases the risk of challenges to acquiring this skill. Caregivers are fundamental and research shows that their involvement supports the maintenance and sustainability of this skill. Four caregivers were taught a 24-step toilet training program to teach toileting. Behaviors measured included urinati

OBJECTIVES: Although the challenges of toilet training for children and adolescents with Down syndrome (DS) are well-known, details such as specific associations with comorbidities and related exacerbating factors are lacking. This study aims to characterize the nature of toilet training in a cohort of children and adolescents with DS and evaluate characteristics and comorbid conditions that may contribute to or prolong toilet training success in those with DS.
METHOD: This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study investigating toilet training in children and adolescents with DS. A survey w

Pigs naturally separate their elimination area from their lying area. However, in intensive farming systems, it is a challenge to structure the pens in a way that all pigs eliminate in the designated areas. The concept of a pig toilet has been proposed to increase animal welfare and reduce ammonia released in pig farming. A pig toilet is defined as a designated limited area within the pen where pigs voluntarily excrete and can be rewarded for depositing their urine and faeces. This review aims to assess, from a behavioural and design point of view, the feasibility and potential solutions of tr

Air pollution due to the presence of small particles and gases in the atmosphere is a major cause of health problems. In urban areas, where most of the population is concentrated, traffic is a major source of air pollutants (such as nitrogen oxides or NO x and carbon monoxide or CO). Therefore, for smart cities, carrying out an adequate traffic monitoring is a key issue, since it can help citizens to make better decisions and public administrations to define appropriate policies. Thus, citizens could use these data to make appropriate mobility decisions. In the same way, a city council can ex

Promoting continence with children with a learning difficulty has traditionally taken second place to managing their other needs. Previous studies have given the impression that children are not ready for toilet training unless they are able to experience awareness of self and respond to the stimulus of a full bladder. This has resulted in assumptions regarding the ability of some children with learning difficulties to become toilet trained and consequently they are 'labelled' as incontinent and automatically issued with nappies. This approach means that any underlying problems such as constip

Allergic contact dermatitis from various components of toilet seats has been well described. We report a case of a young boy presenting with an atypical pattern of dermatitis who was found to be allergic to his training toilet seat. This case highlights the importance of recognizing this diagnosis and the role of potty seats as the causative factor.

A simplified version of Azrin and Foxx's method of toilet training was evaluated in an adult with profound mental retardation. An ABAB reversal design was used to evaluate intervention effects. Results indicated that the procedure was effective in reducing toileting accidents and in increasing appropriate urinations. Additionally, continence was maintained at a 3 month follow-up evaluation.

PURPOSE: To review a leading causes and surgical outcome of hypospadias repair in toilet-trained children and adolescents in our department.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Over the period from 1987 to 2010, 84 toilet-trained children and adolescents with a median age of 13 years (range 4-18) underwent hypospadias repair. Voiding symptoms were a cause for referral in 31(36%) patients, difficulties in self-appraisal or patient desire in 49(55.7%) and 4(4.8%) patients with DSD underwent male genitoplasty as a part of sex reassignment. Of those 43(51.2%) had glanular hypospadias, 36(42.9%) distal and 5(5

OBJECTIVE: Boys born with posterior urethral valves (PUV) often experience bladder development issues due to urethral obstruction during gestation. Despite early surgical intervention, bladder dysfunction can persist, leading to detrusor overactivity and vesical overdistension. Successful toilet training is key in managing bladder function and controlling intravesical and upper urinary tract pressures. This study aims to evaluate toilet training outcomes in children with PUV.
STUDY DESIGN: This single-centre ambispective cohort study included 142 children aged 4 years and older who underwent

PURPOSE: We investigated associated urodynamic abnormalities in toilet trained children with vesicoureteral reflux.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 298 toilet trained children with primary vesicoureteral reflux underwent urodynamic evaluation. Urodynamic parameters were reviewed and correlated with age, gender, presence of lower urinary tract symptoms and reflux severity.
RESULTS: Symptomatic lower urinary tract symptoms were present in 111 children (37.2%, group 1). Children with lower urinary tract symptoms had significantly decreased severity of vesicoureteral reflux compared to childre

Cleaner pig pens with less fouling by urine and faeces are associated with lower ammonia emissions and improved hygiene and indoor air quality. This study aimed to train and encourage pigs to urinate in a designated small area, called the pig toilet, to achieve a cleaner pen. The toilet was designed to automatically train pigs with a food reward following urination inside the toilet, using a liquid-volume sensor installed beneath the toilet floor. A total of 24 pigs aged 12 weeks were trained for 4 weeks in four experimental pens with outdoor access. Two pens had an open, easily accessible toi

Enuresis and delayed bladder control are a common source of psychosocial concern for both parents and children. Different cultures have different norms with regard to parenting attitudes. The fact that in Turkey, parents consider enuresis or encopresis as a sign of laziness, misbehavior, or disobedience rather than a medical disorder may cause children to be exposed to physical and emotional violence and maltreatment by the family as a corrective strategy. We present a case in this paper which had a fatal outcome due to physical violence against a child as an educational measure and a toilet t

To investigate effects of diaper-free times, elimination communication (EC) and early toilet training, a web-based survey was conducted for caregivers. The more diaper-free times an infant experienced during day, the earlier it was toilet trained (P < .001), which was enhanced by the usage of cloth diapers. The amount of diaper-free times significantly reduced the caregiver's continuous sleep, the occurrence of rashes and balm usage (P < .001) and lead to a more regular defecation frequency. Cloth diaper usage had no effect on rashes or balm usage, but on diaper change rate (P < .001). We coul

Behavioral treatment of urinary incontinence was given to 39 elderly outpatients; 19 had stress incontinence, 12 detrusor motor instability, and 8 urge incontinence without instability. Biofeedback involving the bladder and sphincter was used to teach selective control of sphincter muscles or voluntary inhibition of detrusor contractions. Traditional behavioral methods used included habit training to gradually increase the voiding interval and relaxation training to cope with the urge to void. After an average 3.5 training sessions, patients with stress incontinence reduced the frequency of in

This paper describes how the occupational therapist, following a urologists' orders, teaches clean intermittent self-catheterization as a self-care skill to handicapped school children when no trained enterostomal therapist is available. It contains a review of the literature, a definition of neurogenic bladder types, a description of intermittent catheterization, and the steps involved in teaching the technique to children. A case study is given that shows the training of a child with myelomeningocele to catheterize herself, and the therapist's interaction with the school nurse and other memb
