Sonography of the tongue and floor of mouth. Part II: Neoplasms of the tongue.

Frequently, correct evaluation of space-occupying lesions in the tongue is not possible with clinical methods only. In an attempt to assess the value of sonography in the detection of tongue lesions, we used submental sonography to examine 62 patients with suspicious palpatory findings upon physical examination of the tongue. Ultrasound detected 45 out of 47 tumours that were eventually confirmed either by surgery or by biopsy. Inadequate technique was the only factor that affected the detection rate. Sonography appears to be a reasonable guide in determining size and site of a tumour of the t

Transoral robotic surgery for base of tongue neoplasms.

Surgery to the base of tongue (BOT) in the presence of neoplasm is a challenging topic for head and neck surgeons. This area is difficult to access and includes important neurovascular structures such as the hypoglossal nerve and lingual artery. The pivotal role of the tongue base in swallowing makes planning the surgical approach more challenging. The surgical approaches vary from open neck/mandibulotomy to transoral laser surgery (TLS) which have significant disadvantages. After introduction of transoral robotic surgery (TORS) to otolaryngology practice with the da Vinci Surgical system, we

[Neoplasms of the base of the tongue. Evaluation with magnetic resonance].

The authors investigated MR capabilities in evaluating the neoplasms of the base of tongue. Thirty patients were examined. The images were obtained--at INI, Grottaferrata, Rome--using a 1.5 T superconductive Gyroscan unit by Philips. On T2-weighted images, the neoplasms were always hyperintense; in 10 patients edema could be distinguished from neoplasm. On T1-weighted scans the tumor exhibited the same signal intensity as the tongue muscle in 4 patients, while in the extant 26 cases it was hypointense. This pattern proved to be aspecific and could not be correlated with a specific histology. I

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) for base of tongue neoplasms.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a minimally invasive surgical technique for the treatment of base of tongue neoplasms using the optical and technical advantages of robotic surgical instrumentation. STUDY DESIGN: Ten experimental procedures including tongue base exposure and dissections were performed on three cadavers and two mongrel dogs. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) was then performed on three human patients with tongue base cancers in a prospective human trial. METHODS: Using the da Vinci Surgical Robot (Intuitive Surgical, Inc., Sunnyvale, CA), we performed a total of 10 base of tongue resecti

[The clinical study of tongue flaps repairing after resecting pharyngeal neoplasm and laryngeal neoplasm].

OBJECTIVE: To study the repair methods of the defect after resecting pharyngeal neoplasm and laryngeal neoplasm. METHODS: Four kinds of tongue flap, such as 1/3 tongue flap, 1/2 tongue base flap, tongue base flap and transverse tongue flap were devised and applied in 15 patients with pharyngeal neoplasm and laryngeal neoplasm. RESULTS: These tongue flaps were alive in all patients. The wound of 13 patients healed in I stage. Two patients dehiscenced because of infection and healed after treatment. All the patients deglutited well. One-year, 3-year, disease-free survive rate were 92.9% (13/14

Mesenchymal neoplasms of the tongue: A clinicopathologic study of 93 cases.

Neoplasms of the tongue are relatively common, and the vast majority are epithelial in phenotype. Although uncommon, a diverse and distinctive array of mesenchymal neoplasms arises in this anatomic site. To increase our understanding of these lesions, we reviewed our experience of MNs of the tongue and described their clinicopathologic features. The pathology archives from 2005 to 2021 and the consultation files of one of the authors were queried for all MNs of the tongue. We reviewed the histologic slides and ancillary studies and obtained clinical data from the available medical records. Nin

A foreign body embedded in the mobile tongue masquerading as a neoplasm.

Foreign bodies in a mobile tongue are rarely presented to the laryngologist, because such bodies are commonly lodged superficially and are easily removed by the patients themselves or by general practitioners. Thus, it is rare that a foreign body totally embedded in the mobile part of the tongue presents as an enlarged tongue mass. We have described a 64-year-old female with a 3-month history of an enlarged mass in the anterior right tongue. Physical examination showed a mass located in the anterior right tongue, with intact mucosa and normal color. A benign tongue neoplasm was considered firs

[Intra-oral sonography in neoplasms of the mouth and base of the tongue].

Sonography has proved superior to CT and MRI for imaging T1 or T2 carcinomas of the oral cavity and base of the tongue. However, in examining the anterior half of the tongue and the floor of the mouth problems arise due to absorption of sound by the mandible and air inclusion. Ultrasound examination can be performed end-orally by means of a miniaturised transducer. End-oral sonography produces images of the anterior parts of the tongue and the floor of the mouth without artefacts. This method is superior to conventional transcutaneous sonography for this region.

[Lingual thyroid: a rare disease resembling base of tongue neoplasm].

The ectopic thyroid gland occurring in the midline of the base of tongue is a rare developmental anomaly. It may cause differential diagnostic problems with real malignant tumor. Symptoms, if where are any: foreign-body-feeling, swallowing difficulties, dyspnea, articulation disorders, bleeding and hypothyroidism, but in many cases the diagnosis is accidental. We describe two cases of lingual thyroid gland operated in our department, and discuss the present trends of the treatment of this disease. We agree with most of the authors that only cases presenting with symptoms should be operated, an

Liposarcoma of the base of tongue and tonsillar fossa: A possibly underdiagnosed neoplasm.

Liposarcomas of the head and neck are exceedingly rare, and fewer than 90 cases have been reported in the literature. Liposarcoma of the oral cavity is an even less common entity, and to our knowledge only nine cases have been reported to date. We report the clinical and pathologic findings of a case of well-differentiated liposarcoma of the base of tongue and tonsillar fossa. The patient is a 76-year-old white man with a long-standing history of a mass in the oral cavity and hypopharynx. The mass had been resected several times over the span of 23 years, and diagnoses of lipoma, neurofibroma,

Clinical features and recurrence factors of benign neoplasms of the tongue base.

INTRODUCTION: Neoplasms of the tongue base are rare, but they range from benign neoplasms to congenital diseases and malignant neoplasms. The purpose of this study is to analyze the clinical features and recurrence factors of benign tumors of the tongue base. METHODS: The study included 27 cases of benign neoplasms of the tongue base from January 2010 to February 2022. RESULTS: Of these 27 patients, 19 were male and 8 were female. Most cases were found incidentally without any specific symptoms, and squamous papilloma was the most common tumor. We performed microscopic or endoscopic transora

Tuberculosis of the tongue clinically masquerading as a neoplasm: a case report and literature review.

Tuberculosis of the tongue is a very rare event even in areas and countries in which tuberculosis is endemic. The disease can present itself in a variety of clinical appearances, most of which may mimic malignant lingual neoplasms clinically. In this case, we present a patient who initially complained of an ulcerated lingual swelling, which was suspected to be a squamous cell carcinoma on clinical examination. In addition, the diagnosis was missed on the first and initial biopsy as it was not representative of the lesion. The diagnosis of lingual tuberculosis was made by histopathology on a se

Colonic-type adenocarcinoma of the base of the tongue: a case report of a rare neoplasm.

Lingual adenocarcinomas (ADC), either primary or metastatic to the tongue are extraordinarily rare neoplasms. Primary lingual adenocarcinomas are primarily of minor salivary gland origin. Two cases of primary colonic-type adenocarcinomas of the base of the tongue were recently reported for the first time in the English literature. We present an additional case of lingual intestinal-type adenocarcinoma with mucinous features that occurred in association with cervical node metastasis and discuss the clinicopathologic features and histogenetic aspects of this rare entity.

Transmandibular approach to the malignant neoplasms of the mouth base, tongue root and oropharynx.

Tumors of the mouth basis, tongue root and oropharynx present a challenge for surgical treatment. High recurrence rates, poor survival, and significant postoperative alterations in speech and swallowing function are common experiences for patients with malignancies in these anatomic sites. This paper reviews the evaluation of displayed patients: pathologic features, surgical approaches and postoperative complications reported in recent managing patients with these neoplasms. A modification of usual surgical techniques has been used by the author to treat 30 tumors in this region and it is pres

The data concerning the degree of adhesion and antagonism of microorganisms of oral cavity in patients with malignant neoplasms of tongue is presented. it is established that pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microflora has more mainly high and less infrequent degree of adhesion. the normal microflora has average and low degree of adhesion. About 90% of lactobacilla of oral cavity manifest no antagonism concerning pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic microorganisms. The antagonism of enterobacteria, staphylococcii and lactobacilla is absent. The staphylococci, including producing β-la
