Tonsillar actinomycosis that mimics tonsillar neoplasm.

Actinomycosis is a chronic suppurative infection that can develop almost anywhere in the body. Cervicofacial actinomycosis is the most common form of the disease. We report a case of tonsillar actinomycosis that causes massive, asymmetric enlargement of tonsil and mimics the neoplasia. The most common cause of asymmetric tonsil hypertrophy is tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma and lymphomas. Tonsillar actinomycosis is a rare entity that should be kept in mind, if cases cannot be clarified with clinical and laboratory findings, when radiological findings are suspicious about malignancy.

Canine tonsillar neoplasia and tonsillar metastasis from various primary neoplasms.

Tonsillar metastasis from distant primary tumours has not been described in dogs, and reports are rare in humans. The aims of this study were to determine whether tumour metastasis occurs to the canine palatine tonsils and evaluate whether afferent lymphatics drain to the palatine tonsils via skull indirect computed tomography lymphangiography (ICTL). Retrospective review of the diagnostic laboratory tonsillar histopathology submissions was performed. ICTL studies (n = 53) were retrospectively reviewed by a single radiologist. Of 882 total tonsil histopathology samples, 492 (56%) were consider

[Tonsillar Actinomycosis as a Differential Diagnosis of Tonsillar Neoplasm: Case Report and Literature Review].

Tonsillar actinomycosis is a rare chronic disease that affects tonsillar tissue secondary to infection by anaerobic bacteria in the oral cavity. It usually presents as tonsillar hyperplasia and may mimic malignancy. We present the case of a patient referred from the pediatric department with severe unilateral tonsillar asymmetry with suspicion of malignancy. An imaging study showed tonsillar hyperplasia with no signs of local dissemination. The definitive diagnosis was made by excisional biopsy and histopathological study. An infectious disease evaluation indicated complementary treatment with

A Diagnostic Challenge: Toxoplasmosis Masquerading as Tonsillar Neoplasm.

This case report elucidates an uncommon manifestation of toxoplasmosis characterized by an ulcerative oropharyngeal lesion and cervical lymphadenopathy, which intriguingly simulated a tonsillar neoplasm. The patient, a 28-year-old immunocompetent woman, reported symptoms such as a persistent sore throat, unilateral neck pain, and otalgia. Despite the initial clinical impressions, a diagnostic left subtotal tonsillectomy revealed no malignancy but marked acute and chronic inflammation. A comprehensive investigation subsequently indicated a recent primary infection with Toxoplasma gondii, as evi

[Results of radiotherapy with cobalt-60 in tonsillar neoplasms].

From 1963 to 1978 119 patients with a carcinoma of the tonsillar fossa received cobalt-60-therapy from 60 to 70 Gy to the primary lesion and the lymph nodes. The 5-year-survival-rate was 34%, with a combined therapy of surgery and irradiation it was 43.6%. For 44 patients with a sarcoma of the tonsillar fossa the 5-year-survival was 32%. For the patients with a carcinoma chemotherapy was only given for palliation.

[Neck reoperations in patients with laryngeal, lingual and tonsillar neoplasms].

One of the most common reasons of failure in head and neck cancer treatment are metastases in regional lymph nodes. Preoperative assessment of the neck lymphatic system is an important task, but even more crucial goal is to monitor the patients after initial operation or combined treatment. The frequency of nodal recurrences ranged from 9% to 23%. It constitute nearly 50% of all treatment failures in larynx, tongue and tonsil malignancies. There are different methods of therapy in nodal recurrence treatment, but the most recommended, easily accessible and widely used is surgery. The group of 2

Actinomycosis mimicking a tonsillar neoplasm in an elderly diabetic patient.

Actinomycosis is a slowly progressive infection that can occur anywhere in the body. Three distinct clinical entities are described: cervico-facial, abdomino-pelvic and thoracopulmonary. Actinomyces are anaerobic, gram positive, non-acid-fast, branched filamentous bacteria that form part of the normal oral, colonic and vaginal flora of humans. The cervico-facial form of the disease is commonest and results from direct invasion of commensal oral actinomyces into local tissues. The most frequently isolated species is A. israelii. We describe a case where Actinomycosis caused massive unilateral h

Liposarcoma of the base of tongue and tonsillar fossa: A possibly underdiagnosed neoplasm.

Liposarcomas of the head and neck are exceedingly rare, and fewer than 90 cases have been reported in the literature. Liposarcoma of the oral cavity is an even less common entity, and to our knowledge only nine cases have been reported to date. We report the clinical and pathologic findings of a case of well-differentiated liposarcoma of the base of tongue and tonsillar fossa. The patient is a 76-year-old white man with a long-standing history of a mass in the oral cavity and hypopharynx. The mass had been resected several times over the span of 23 years, and diagnoses of lipoma, neurofibroma,

Localized Tonsillar Amyloidosis Associated With a Plasma Cell Neoplasm Presenting as an Oropharyngeal Mass: A Diagnostic Challenge.

Amyloidosis is a rare and heterogeneous group of disorders characterized by extracellular deposition of misfolded proteins, which may present as either localized or systemic disease. In the head and neck region, the presentation of amyloidosis is uncommon and may clinically mimic neoplastic processes. We report the case of a 58-year-old man with a five-year history of progressive oropharyngeal symptoms, initially perceived as a foreign body sensation and intermittent odynophagia, later evolving to dysphagia to solids. Physical examination revealed marked asymmetry of the palatine tonsils due t

An unusual pigmented tonsil neoplasm presenting to Head & Neck Clinic: a case report and literature review of primary tonsillar malignant mucosal melanoma.

Primary mucosal melanoma of the tonsil is rare, with 27 reported cases. Careful diagnosis is necessary, as the tonsil is more often a site of metastatic melanoma from a cutaneous primary tumour. In this report, we present a case of primary right tonsillar mucosal melanoma with widespread metastasis in a 31-year-old man who presented with a 3-month history of enlarging neck lumps. On examination, he had cervical lymphadenopathy and a pigmented, vascular lesion of his right tonsil, which was diagnosed as melanoma following investigation. He had widespread metastases upon presentation, and is cur

Tonsillar Actinomycosis Simulating an Oropharyngeal Neoplasm in a 67-Year-Old Man With Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension, and Ischemic Heart Disease: A Case Report From King Faisal General Hospital, Hofuf, Saudi Arabia.

Actinomyces species constitute part of the normal microbial flora of the oral cavity. When mucosal integrity is disrupted, these organisms can produce invasive cervicofacial infections. Tonsillar actinomycosis can closely mimic an aggressive oropharyngeal malignancy in elderly patients with significant comorbidities. A 67-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and ischemic heart disease presented with a chronic progressively enlarging right tonsillar mass accompanied by throat discomfort. Clinical assessment and computerized tomography imaging scan revealed a 42 mm × 24 mm ×

Successfully treated lingual tonsillar metastasis from bronchial adenocarcinoma.

Tonsillar metastasis from neoplasms, including lung cancer, are extremely rare, and the prognosis for patients with tonsillar metastases is rather poor. We herein describe a case of long-term survival following radiation for lingual tonsillar metastasis from a bronchial adenocarcinoma. A 39-year-old male was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma of the right lung and was surgically treated. Four months after surgery, a mass arising from the lingual tonsil was noted at the root of the tongue and was pathologically diagnosed as metastasis from lung cancer. In addition, a computed tomography scan reveale

Oropharyngeal Lipoma: A Rare Case of Dysphagia.

Lipomas are benign and slow-growing neoplasms that typically develop in the subcutaneous tissue. They rarely occur in the upper aerodigestive tract. Oropharyngeal lipomas are rare. They represent 0.5% of all neoplasms of the head and neck. We present a case of a 43-year-old female with a polypoid mass in the base of the left palatine tonsil. The patient underwent a left tonsillectomy and a resection of the mass. The pathological diagnosis was tonsillar lipoma. We describe the clinical characteristics and the management of this rare case. Palatine tonsillar lipoma is a rare benign tumor with an

Adult tonsillectomy: relationship between indications and postoperative hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to determine the possible relationship between the indications for tonsillectomy in adult population and to estimate the incidence of postoperative hemorrhage. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Medical records of 200 adult patients who underwent tonsillectomy between January 2003 and October 2008 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The indications for adult tonsillectomy were chronic infection in 153 patients (76.5%); upper airway obstruction secondary to tonsillar hypertrophy in 37 patients (18.5%) and suspected neoplasms in 10 patients (5%). Sixteen patients (8%

Fibroangiolipoma of palatine tonsil: A case report and literature review.

Lipomas of the palatine tonsil are rare benign neoplasms in clinical practice. We present a case of palatine tonsillar fibroangiolipoma in a 50-year-old Chinese male with a history of multiple lipomas on the back and extremities. It was diagnosed based on histological examination and integrated analysis. Good wound healing and no evidence of recurrence were noted within 6 months follow-up after tonsillectomy. This article also puts a spotlight on the differential diagnosis of benign tonsillar tumors and reviewed recent relevant literature.

Bronchial adenocarcinoma presenting as a lingual tonsillar metastasis.

We describe a case of a lingual tonsillar metastasis as the first manifestation of a bronchial adenocarcinoma. Tonsillar metastases infrequently become manifest before the diagnosis of the primary neoplasm. A review of the literature disclosed 89 cases of carcinoma metastasizing to the palatine tonsil, but no one has reported the involvement of the lingual tonsil. Our patient is the first described case of bronchogenic carcinoma with this unusual form of presentation and furthermore is also the first carcinoma metastasizing to the lingual tonsil.

[Bilateral tonsillar hypertrophy as the first manifestation of B cell-small lymphocytic lymphoma with interfolicular pattern].

B-cell small lymphocytic lymphoma typically involves nodal or extranodal tissues as a diffuse proliferation with proliferation centers (pseudofollicules) obliterating normal architecture. But there are unusual patterns of involvement including interfollicular pattern that can be difficult to recognize histologically and probably represent partial or early involvement by neoplasm. Tonsillar lymphoma usually presents either as a unilaterally enlarged palatine tonsil or as an ulcerative and fungating lesion over the tonsillar area. Most lymphomas that involve the tonsil are diffuse large B cell l
