[Psychological and mental aspects of increased tooth abrasion].

The analysis of literary and other information sources (in PubMed, Google Scholar, KiberLeninka and eLibrary databases) devoted to the study of dental manifestations of psychological conditions and the analysis of the ability of dentists to identify psychological predictors of increased tooth erasure in adolescents and young people. Disorders such as stress, depression, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, alcohol dependence, eating disorders - may be risk factors for the development of increased tooth abrasion. Comorbid conditions such as bruxism and gastroesophageal reflux are also cons

Prevention of erosive, abrasive and erosive/abrasive tooth wear by a high-concentration fluoride dentifrice: an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: This in-vitro study compared the protective effects of a 5000-ppm fluoride dentifrice with an anti-erosive 1450-ppm formulation containing stannous chloride and chitosan under erosive, abrasive, and erosive/abrasive conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 240 bovine enamel specimens were randomly assigned to three models: erosion followed by abrasion (EA), erosion only (E), and abrasion only (A) (n = 80 per model; n = 20 per treatment). Four treatments were tested: artificial saliva (AS), a conventional 1450-ppm NaF and SnF2 dentifrice (CT; Colgate Total), an anti-erosive 14

A survey of factors possibly associated with cervical abrasion of tooth surfaces.

The study indicates that cervical abrasion is related in some way to a factor or factors associated with the initial stages of the tooth-brushing procedure. The evidence, furthermore, demonstrates that an excessive use of dentifrice habitually placed, undiluted, on the same area of the mouth, may produce the abrasion. In view of this evidence, it would seem prudent to advise patients to use decreased quantities of dentifrice and to initiate the brushing procedure on the occlusal surfaces of the teeth to effect a dilution of the dentrifrice. The same effect might be accomplished by alternating

Intraoral leukoplakia, abrasion, periodontal breakdown, and tooth loss in a snuff dipper.

Dentists should be aware that snuff dipping or chewing is increasing in southern states and perhaps in other sections of the United States. These habits can lead to clinical leukoplakia, gingival recession, tooth abrasion, and periodontal bone destruction. The possibility also exists that a malignant transformation of leukoplakia can develop in persons who use snuff and other forms of tobacco.

[Clinical study on the relationship between tooth abrasion and the habits of chewing betel nut].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between tooth abrasion and long-term chewing betel nut. METHODS: The time, frequency, clinical features of occlusal abrasion, and results of pantomography were studied in 64 patients with the habits of chewing betel nut. RESULTS: The occlusal surfaces of all patients had abrasion from mild to severe. The longer the chewing time, the more severe the occlusal abrasion (P < 0.01). The occlusal abrasion became more severe with the increase in chewing frequency (P < 0.01). The severe abrasion was accompanied with periapical periodontitis and the resorpti

Effect of an experimental mouth rinse containing NaF and TiF4 on tooth erosion and abrasion in situ.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared the effect of an experimental NaF/TiF4 mouth rinse with a commercial tin/F mouth rinse on the prevention of tooth wear in situ. METHODS: Fifteen subjects took part in this crossover and double-blind study, in which they wore a palatal appliance with 8 bovine teeth samples (4 enamel and 4 root dentine) in each of 3 phases (5 days each). Half of the samples were subjected to erosive challenges, and the other half to erosive plus abrasive challenges. The phases corresponded to the use of 1) Experimental solution containing NaF/TiF4 (189 ppm Ti+4, 500 ppm F-, pH 4.4

A scanning electron-microscopic study of in vitro abrasion of mammalian tooth enamel under compressive loads.

Microscopic tooth-wear (microwear) patterns can be an important tool for assessing modes and rates of abrasive tooth wear, but their analysis and interpretation is complicated by the fact that microwear is influenced by many factors. Three of these factors were here tested under conditions of compressive loading: (1) species differences in enamel structure, (2) abrasive particle size and (3) magnitude of force. Teeth of four species (Homo sapiens, Lemur fulvus, Ovis aries and Crocodylus rhombifer) were abraded in vitro using three sizes of abrasive silicon-carbide grit (average diameters 73, 2

Tooth length and incisal wear and growth in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) fed diets of different abrasiveness.

Dental diseases are among the most important reasons for presenting guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) and other rodents to veterinary clinics, but the aetiopathology of this disease complex is unclear. Clinicians tend to believe that the ever-growing teeth of rabbits and rodents have a constant growth that needs to be worn down by the mastication of an appropriate diet. In this study, we tested the effect of four different pelleted diets of increasing abrasiveness [due to both internal (phytoliths) and external abrasives (sand)] or whole grass hay fed for 2 weeks each in random order to 16 guinea

Intraoral Air Abrasion: A Review of Devices, Materials, Evidence, and Clinical Applications in Restorative Dentistry.

Intraoral air abrasion is a technique in which abrasive particles are used to remove or alter tooth structure. Intraoral air-abrasion devices are available as standalone units that offer a variety of customization, such as modifications to air pressure, particle flow rate, and water flow rate, or as attachments to a dental unit, allowing for a smaller footprint in the operatory. Some devices used for intraoral air abrasion are able to limit excess particle spray through utilization of a shroud of water. Aluminum oxide, or alumina, is the most commonly used and most abrasive type of air-abrasio

Changes in the functional condition of the masticatory muscles with increased teeth abrasion.

OBJECTIVE: Introduction: The term "pathological abrasion" (increased abrasion) can be described as a loss of tooth hard tissue on the occlusal, oral, vestibular surfaces of teeth or in the occlusal area. Treatment of increased abrasion of teeth is a difficult task for the practical work of a dentist. The choice of the optimal treatment plan provides the greatest likelihood of long-term success and minimal probability of complication appearance. The aim of our work was to study the functional activity of the masticatory muscles in the pathogenesis of the development of increased abrasion of too

THE PURPOSE: Of this study was to evaluate the informativeness of the developed tools for 3D analysis of occlusal surfaces and their mutual contacts on the example of tooth rows with different degrees of abrasion and bite features. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The developed method of 3D analysis of occlusal contacts (in the range of 0-300 microns of occlusal surfaces separation) was tested in 50 people with different degrees of tooth abrasion. RESULTS: It is determined that the area of direct contacts (in the range of separation 0-50 microns) increases from 30 to 150% depending on the degree of abr

Gingival recession: intra-oral distribution and associated factors.

This study assesses the role of poor oral hygiene and forceful toothbrushing as risk factors for recession. As part of a cross-sectional root surface caries study, 298 subjects, 42 to 67 years of age, with at least one exposed root surface, were examined. Since 66% of the root surface exposure and practically all the abrasion was on buccal surfaces, the analyses focused only on the buccal surface. Analysis of variance on subject means for buccal recession showed both calculus and presence of buccal root surfaces with abrasion to be significantly associated with recession after adjusting for ag

Dental Abrasion of Incisor caused by a Babies' Dummy Clip: A Case Report.

Tooth surface loss (TSL), the non-carious loss of tooth tissue, is considered pathological if the teeth involved experience sensitivity and pain, are functionally compromised or they detract from the patient's appearance. TSL is a common clinical finding in many patient groups, although differences between the primary and permanent dentition contribute to TSL occurring at a faster rate and with worse outcomes in the primary dentition. This case report presents localized abrasion and associated apical periodontitis affecting a single primary tooth in a 2-year-old infant following the misuse of

[Pathologic abrasion].

By "pathologic abrasion" is defined the excessive loss of the hard dental substance, which may lead to a total removal of the anatomic crown. This is one of most severe affections of ADM but also one of the best tolerated for a certain length of time. Four aspects of abrasion are frequently noted:--helicoidal abrasion--ad palatum abrasion;--horizontal abrasion;--keylock type abrasion. Excessive abrasion is due to bruxisme in most of the cases, and also to diet, but to a lesser extent. In most of the patients DVO is not modified because, as abrasion persists the continuous process of dental eru

Dental pathology of the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus).

Skulls from 1,085 California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) were examined macroscopically according to defined criteria. The museum specimens, 61.8% male and 37.3% female, were acquired from strandings and varied in age from juvenile to adult. The majority of teeth were available for examination (95.7%); 3.8% of teeth were artefactually absent, 0.4% deemed absent due to acquired tooth loss and 0.1% were congenitally absent. Acquired tooth loss was associated significantly with sex (P = 0.004) with males having more tooth loss than females and total ante-mortem tooth loss was associated sig

Tooth surface loss: causes, management, and prevention.

OBJECTIVES: Tooth wear, also referred to as tooth surface loss, occurs due to causes other than caries. This involves the loss of hard tissues, namely enamel, dentin, and/or cementum. Types of tooth wear/tooth surface loss are abrasion, abfraction, attrition, and erosion. These multifactorial conditions can be caused by factors such as lifestyle, diet, or even habits, and may not be symptomatic. The focus of this article is to provide clinicians with detailed examples and explanations of the causes of tooth loss to aid in early diagnosis. Through early identification, the preventive measures o

Bilaminar technique in the treatment of a deep cervical abrasion defect.

New materials (restorative and adhesive) for the treatment of cervical abrasions have produced better results in terms of esthetics (choice and stability of colors) and duration (marginal fit and wear resistance). Nevertheless, conservative restoration of cervical abrasion cannot be considered the most suitable treatment in certain clinical situations: (1) when the abrasion defect involves the root surface, either exclusively or primarily; (2) when a site has difficult esthetic demands resulting from excessive tooth length with gingival recession; and (3) in the presence of root caries. The ai

[Research progress in non-carious cervical lesions].

Non-carious cervical lesion is a common dental disease, which not only affects the aesthetic and function of the teeth, but also leads to dentin sensitivity, pulpitis and other consequences. The main causes of lesions are abrasion, abfraction, acid erosion and so on. The treatment design should depend on the etiology, defect size, location, symptoms and presence or absence of gingival recession.

Gingival recessions and noncarious cervical lesions: a soft and hard tissue challenge.

Gingival recessions and noncarious cervical lesions are frequent and closely related defects which can be successfully treated by mucogingival surgery and restorative therapy techniques either used alone or in combination depending on the defect characteristics. Proper treatment planning is guided by careful clinical diagnosis. A selection of treatment modalities are presented and useful hints proposed: the long term success is always strictly bound to the identification and elimination of the etiologic factors, to a correct treatment and a meticulous maintenance program.
