External cervical resorption is caused, almost exclusively, by dental trauma - especially those characterized by concussion - and is a dental disease to be diagnosed and treated accurately by endodontists. However, the vast majority of the cases is initially diagnosed by an orthodontist, due to the imaging possibilities in standardized documentations. Among the causes of external cervical resorption, it is common to mistakenly attribute it to orthodontic treatment, traumatic occlusion or even to chronic inflammatory periodontal disease. External cervical resorption is associated to dental trau

BACKGROUND: Several lesions of diverse origin may be detected in the oral cavity of children, affecting the oral mucosa, jaws, or teeth. In equivocal cases, their clinicopathologic features may show considerable overlap with various entities. We present a case of a "ring-like" hard mass around the cervical area of a primary tooth in a child and discuss the diagnostic challenges.
METHODS: A 2.5 year-old girl was presented by her mother for evaluation of a painless left first primary lower incisor lesion, first noticed 5 months ago. Medical history was unremarkable, while previous injury or oth

Recent studies have indicated ankylosis, loss of attachment, and external resorption occurring as sequelae of orthodontic movement of impacted teeth when these teeth are ligated around the cervix with wire. The purpose of this study was to record the effects of two commonly employed methods of attachment to impacted teeth--the wire ligation and the direct bond. Twenty subjects who had previously undergone full-banded orthodontic treatment involving a unilateral impacted maxillary canine were studied. The contralateral non-impacted maxillary canine served as a control. In eight of the subjects

Apical periodontitis is a common clinical disease caused by bacteria; bacterial metabolites can cause an imbalance in bone homeostasis, bone mass reduction, and tooth loss. Bone resorption in apical periodontitis causes a concentration of stress in the tooth and periodontal tissues during occlusion, which aggravates the disease. Emerging evidence indicates that bone morphogenetic protein 9 (BMP9), also known as growth differentiation factor 2(Gdf2), may play an important role in tooth and dentoalveolar development. Herein, we investigated the role of BMP9 in the development of apical periodont

The maxillary canines of Smilodon californicus Bovard, 1907 have a deeply curved cementoenamel junction. The gingiva of modern cats is attached to the tooth at the cementoenamel junction and provides tactile and other dental information to the animal. The presence of cementum at the cervix of the maxillary canines, also called sabers, would indicate that the gingiva in Smilodon was attached in this region. Such an attachment would be advantageous, providing stability and sensory input for the large tooth. Also, gingiva at the cervix would impact the manner in which the teeth were used. Previou

Non-carious cervical lesion is a common dental disease, which not only affects the aesthetic and function of the teeth, but also leads to dentin sensitivity, pulpitis and other consequences. The main causes of lesions are abrasion, abfraction, acid erosion and so on. The treatment design should depend on the etiology, defect size, location, symptoms and presence or absence of gingival recession.

Gingival recessions and noncarious cervical lesions are frequent and closely related defects which can be successfully treated by mucogingival surgery and restorative therapy techniques either used alone or in combination depending on the defect characteristics. Proper treatment planning is guided by careful clinical diagnosis. A selection of treatment modalities are presented and useful hints proposed: the long term success is always strictly bound to the identification and elimination of the etiologic factors, to a correct treatment and a meticulous maintenance program.

OBJECTIVES: The present study aimed to compare the conventional clinical and a digital method for evaluating differences in gingival recession (ΔREC) in patients with advanced periodontitis treated with the non-surgical treatment protocol.
METHODS: Agreement between the methods was evaluated on a sample of ten patients with periodontitis (stage III/IV, grade B/C) with acquired clinical measurements and digital models from baseline (T0) and 12-months after non-surgical treatment of periodontitis (T1). The evaluation was performed on maxillary teeth from right to left second premolar resulting

Interglobular dentine (IGD) is an area of poorly mineralized dentine matrix. It has been reported that there is an association between the retraction of odontoblast processes (OP) and the formation of IGD. A variation of the extent of OP has been described depending on the region of the tooth and age. This study aimed to find out the regional distribution of IGD in human teeth to observe any association between the extent of OP and the pattern of distribution of IGD. Ground sections were prepared from 52 extracted permanent teeth and the presence of IGD was observed in different regions of the

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic tooth movements are based on the ability of bone reaction to mechanical stimulus with the deposition and resorption of alveolar bone. The numerical simulation of tooth movement could be helpful for the treatment strategy. However, at present, few calculations have been carried out on the tooth movement simulation.
METHODS: Finite element (FE) models were developed to simulate an orthodontic treatment of mandibular canine tipping movement during a therapy period with decayed loads. The tooth movement was based on the surface bone remodeling method, and the normal strain

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review assessed the morphological characteristics of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCL), among clinical and ex-vivo studies assessed by observational and imaging methods.
DESIGN: The search strategy was conducted on four online databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science) and grey literature (Google Scholar and OpenGrey). The study selection was performed by three reviewers from March to September (2023). The eligibility criteria were established according to the PICO strategy and included NCCL, morphological characteristics and clinical and ex-vivo stud

Tooth resorption is a common sequela following injuries to or irritation of the periodontal ligament and/or tooth pulp. The course of tooth resorption involves an elaborate interaction among inflammatory cells, resorbing cells, and hard tissue structures. The key cells involved in resorption are of the classic type, which include osteoblasts and odontoclasts. Types of tooth resorption include internal resorption and external resorption. There are two types of internal resorption: root canal (internal) replacement resorption and internal inflammatory resorption. External resorption can be class

After investigating the literature, we suggest these guidelines for tooth bleaching: If bleaching solutions of high concentration are used, prevent accidental exposure of gingival tissues to the solutions by use of a rubber dam. If using lower concentrations of bleaching solutions, avoid long-term exposures to gingival tissues. To maintain pulp vitality, keep bleaching time and temperatures to a minimum. Check teeth for exposed dentin and enamel fractures. Advise patients that thermal sensitivity may occur after the bleaching procedure and may persist for several days. Prescribe premedication

This article describes cervical root resorption, an external inflammatory root resorption arising immediately below the attachment level of the root. The pathogenesis is not fully understood, although many theories have been presented. Clinically, cervical root resorption is usually asymptomatic. The radiographic appearance is variable and is easily mistaken for that of internal root resorption. Histologically, the presentation is identical to that of other inflammatory root resorptions.

Multiple idiopathic cervical root resorption (MICRR) is a rare, idiopathic condition characterized by multiple resorptive lesions in the cervical region of teeth. It manifests as progressive, painless hard tissue loss, often accompanied by periodontal tissue destruction, which may ultimately lead to tooth fracture, loosening, or even exfoliation. In early stages, MICRR is typically asymptomatic and is often incidentally detected through imaging as characteristic "concave" resorptive defects in the cervical area. Currently, no specific treatment is available. The rarity, insidious nature, invas

INTRODUCTION: Multiple Cervical Root Resorption (MCRR) is a rare condition characterized by the progressive destruction of the cervical region of multiple tooth roots, leading to significant tooth loss. The etiology and pathogenesis of MCRR remain poorly understood. Existing knowledge is largely derived from case reports/series. A comprehensive review of literature is crucial to identify potential systemic and dental factors that contribute to the development and progression of MCRR.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Five major health science databases were

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess the temporal evolution of external cervical resorption (ECR) defects using a volumetric quantification method.
METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomographic (CBCT) images of patients diagnosed with ECR who chose not to receive treatment and attended recalls were collected. ECR defects were segmented in CBCT images at baseline and recall, and their volumes were quantified. The volumetric ratio of resorption defects/teeth was calculated. Three-dimensional classification of defects at baseline and recall and the prevalence of root surface perforations

BACKGROUND: Microbial invasion of the amniotic cavity (MIAC) remains an important pathogenetic factor in preterm births. Although most MIACs seem to originate in vaginal microflora, other reservoirs such as the oral microflora have been suggested.
CASE: We report a case of successful eradication of Streptococcus mutans (a bacterium generally found in dental plaque) from the amniotic cavity, using ampicillin, gentamycin, and azythromycin in a woman who presented with threatened preterm labour and a short cervix at 25 weeks' gestation. She delivered at 34 weeks' gestation and was treated for to
